Man suspected of multiple Midtown attacks charged with murder: court docs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City man is facing multiple criminal charges, including murder, in connection with a deadly stabbing last week.
According to the , Johnny X. Holmes faces second-degree murder and one count of armed criminal action for the stabbing death of 62-year-old Jerry Terry.

Court records say that on the officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded to the area of West 34th Street and Broadway Boulevard—about a half-mile south of Penn Valley Park—regarding a 'cutting' at a Midtown apartment.
When officers arrived, they reportedly found Terry with multiple lacerations. He was declared dead at the scene after emergency responders arrived.
According to prosecutors, surveillance footage showed Terry and the alleged suspect walking around the area of the crime scene before the victim was killed.
Court records say the stabbing took place nearly out of the camera's view. After the attack, the suspect was seen leaving the scene.
Investigators say Terry was attacked from behind and stabbed in multiple places on his body.
During the investigation, detectives reportedly found another assault scene, reported in early May, about four to five blocks from last week's deadly stabbing.
Court documents say that on May 4, detectives were sent to investigate a similar stabbing incident, where a homeless man sleeping on a sidewalk was approached by an unknown individual and subsequently stabbed. The victim survived the attack and fought off the man before getting medical attention.
Both cases share multiple characteristics, court records say. The suspect in each incident reportedly had a distinct walk, wore similar dark clothing, had a similar height and build, and left both scenes walking toward West Armour Boulevard and Broadway Boulevard.
Additionally, neither stabbing appeared to have been provoked or motivated by robbery, and neither victim knew the suspect.
Throughout the investigations, court records say they found multiple similar assaults in the same area, including an attack involving a hammer back in July 2024.

Holmes was eventually identified as a suspect in one of the previous assaults, and court documents say he matched the description of the deadly stabbing suspect.
When Holmes was taken into custody, he was reportedly found with blood on his shoes, court records say. Investigators eventually tested the blood, which prosecutors say came back as a match to the stabbing victim, Jerry Terry.
Additionally, during a search of Holmes' apartment, court documents say a pocketknife and sweatpants with blood on them were found, in addition to other clothing pieces that matched the suspect on surveillance.
At this time, Holmes is being held in a Jackson County jail without bond.
The family of one victim, Jerry Terry, came forward and offered a statement later on Wednesday, June 18.
'Our family is devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Jerry Lee. Although the public may know him only through the tragic circumstances of his death, to us he was so much more- a son, a brother, a father, a grandfather, and someone who was deeply loved,' said one of Terry's five daughters, Christy Terry, in a shared statement from the family.
'He loved his mom and sisters deeply and Jerry was especially devoted to his five daughters, whom he loved unconditionally and was immensely proud. In recent months, he found great joy in becoming a grandfather, welcoming two infant grandsons into the world. His face lit up whenever he spoke about them.'

‘It Felt Like Kidnapping,' Khalil Says in First Interview Since Release
Mahmoud Khalil sat in a Manhattan apartment dotted with posters and signs calling for his freedom and described the moment 105 days before when plainclothes immigration agents had handcuffed him in the building lobby. 'All the 'Know Your Rights' information and fliers I read and familiarized myself with were useless,' Mr. Khalil said. 'There are no rights in such situations.' 'It felt like kidnapping,' he said. Mr. Khalil, a 30-year-old Columbia University graduate and permanent resident, was the first student protester targeted and detained by the Trump administration. On Friday, after having spent more than three months in detention in Jena, La., he was released on bail. He traveled most of the night to return to New York City, and on Saturday evening turned off a television newscast on America's attack on Iran to speak publicly for the first time about his arrest, his detention and his plans now that he is free. He said that if President Trump's goal had been to suppress pro-Palestinian speech, the president had 'absolutely failed.' When he was in prison, he had received hundreds of letters from people whose interest in the Palestinian movement had been catalyzed by his case, he said. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
