Bodies of three Maoists will be handed over to kin after legal process, say police

The Hindu2 days ago

The bodies of the three Maoists who were killed in an exchange of fire would be handed over to their family members after following the legal process, Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district Superintendent of Police Amit Bardar said on Thursday.
Addressing the media here, Mr. Bardar said the family members of the three Maoists, upon being informed, arrived at Rampachodavaram to receive the bodies.
'The legal process to hand over the bodies is going on. We will hand over the bodies respectfully once the process is completed,' Mr. Bardar said.
The Superintendent of Police was responding to the allegations levelled by the family members of slain Maoist Venkata Raavi Chaitanya, alias Aruna, alias Ruppi, that the police had not informed them about the death of Aruna and they were not allowed to see the body.
Referring to the encounter, Mr. Bardar said they had information about the movement of the Maoists in the Rampachodavaram area on June 17, following which combing operation was initiated.
'On June 18, between 7 a.m. and 7.15 a.m., an exchange fire had taken place in the Kintukuru forest area under Rampachodavaram police station limits. After the encounter, we found the bodies of three Maoists, two of them women. We recovered three AK 47 rifles, magazines, kit bags and Maoist literature from the place,' Mr. Bardar said.
Apart from Aruna, the other Maoists were identified as Gajarla Ravi, alias Uday, alias Ganesh, a central committee member carrying ₹25 lakh reward on his head, and Anju, alias Mase, who carried a reward of ₹1 lakh.
'Uday and Aruna were involved in more than 150 criminal cases, including the killing of an MLA and former MLA in 2018 and IED blasts,' Mr. Bardar said.
The Superintendent of Police said they had information that about 30 Maoists had entered Andhra Pradesh via Odisha from Chhattisgarh after the announcement of Operation Kagar in November 2024. 'After the first exchange of fire in April and surrenders, there may be five to six members still moving in the AOB region. The operation is still on,' he said.

Nagpur Central Jail to Tighten Security with Enhanced Criminal Profiling

Nagpur: With gang wars and criminal activities escalating inside Nagpur Central Jail, prison authorities are implementing a fresh strategy focused on enhanced criminal profiling and intelligence sharing. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now To facilitate this, prison officials have requested the Nagpur police to provide detailed criminal records of inmates at the time of their admission. This includes comprehensive background information, case histories, gang affiliations, and prior criminal behaviour. The aim is to improve inmate management and reduce the risk of violent clashes within the facility. The strategy was formalised during a high-level coordination and intelligence-sharing meeting held earlier this week. Commissioner of police Ravinder Singal, joint commissioner Navinchandra Reddy, jail superintendent Vaibhav Aage, and other senior officials attended the meeting. Aage underscored the move's importance, stating, "Timely and accurate information about inmates' backgrounds will help us allocate barracks more strategically and minimize the risk of violence." While some information exchange already exists, a senior official noted that the process must become more frequent, structured, and institutionalized for effective criminal profiling. The discussion centered on the growing challenges posed by gang rivalries in Nagpur city and surrounding rural areas, which are increasingly spilling over into the prison system. Authorities face mounting difficulties in preventing retaliatory attacks among rival gang members lodged in the central prison. The situation worsened earlier this year following the violent Hiranwar-Shaiku gang war, after which several members from both groups were incarcerated. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Prison officials struggled to segregate these inmates and house them in separate barracks to avoid further violence. Another serious concern raised during the meeting was the mixing of hardened criminals with white-collar offenders, whose crimes are typically non-violent and economic in nature. Officials warned that such groupings could lead to adverse behavioral influences and compromise prison reform objectives. Additionally, authorities flagged the growing threat posed by urban Maoists and ideologically driven inmates. Housing them alongside younger, impressionable prisoners could lead to radicalization and pose long-term security risks, an official cautioned. Persistent issues such as mobile phone usage, substance abuse, and other illicit activities within the barracks were also discussed. Prison authorities have pledged to implement stricter surveillance and enforcement measures to curb these violations. As part of the new strategy, zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) have been directed to ensure seamless and timely sharing of inmate profiles with prison officials. The initiative aims to bolster prison security and effectively manage the increasingly complex and volatile inmate population within Nagpur Central Jail.

Passenger in UP beaten to death over seat dispute in moving train

A 39-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of 15 to 20 men aboard a moving train late Friday night. The victim, Deepak Yadav, was returning to his hometown of Baghpat from Delhi when he was attacked during the Saharanpur-Delhi passenger train's journey near Fakharpur railway station. According to police, the fatal assault began following a dispute over a seat and continued for nearly 10 km, from Fakharpur to Khekra station. Baghpat-bound passenger thrashed for 10 km, probe underway; 5 arrested (Sourced) Witnesses said the attackers used belts, fists and kicks while some passengers attempted to intervene. The assailants reportedly fled before the train stopped. Government railway police (GRP) officials confirmed that Deepak was taken off the train and rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. His companion on the train had informed police and family members soon after the attack began. 'An FIR has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 191(2) for rioting and Section 103 for murder. Five youths have been arrested and are being questioned. The post-mortem report will help determine whether sharp-edged weapons were used in the assault. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the remaining accused,' Udham Singh Talan, GRP Inspector of Baraut section, Baghpat, said. Deepak, a resident of Mohalla Ahiran in Khekra town, had been employed for 15 years at a chandelier showroom in Bhagirath Palace, Delhi. He is survived by his wife Savitri, daughter Ayushi, and son Aviral. He was the only son of his parents and routinely travelled home every weekend. Several videos recorded by passengers emerged on Saturday, capturing the sequence of the assault. In one video, the victim is purportedly seen being attacked while some individuals try to stop the mob. Another clip shows a group beating Deepak with belts inside the crowded compartment. A shorter video shows the accused jumping off the train near Khekra. The footage is now a key part of the ongoing investigation. Police are reviewing the recordings to identify the attackers and their escape route. Deepak's neighbour, Rajveer Singh, told police that the victim had no history of conflict but mentioned an earlier scuffle involving some of Deepak's colleagues. Though Deepak was not present during that incident, police suspect the same group may have targeted him. According to family members, the attack appears to have been premeditated. Deepak's maternal uncle, Subhash Yadav, alleged that the mob was led by a man identified as Rahul Baba from Basi village. He claimed that the attackers, who frequently travelled on the same route, recognised Deepak when he was alone and launched the assault. 'He was travelling with co-workers who got off at Fakharpur. Moments later, he was surrounded and attacked. We believe they used sharp weapons,' Subhash said.
