Govt agrees to fast-track sepak takraw academy by year-end, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to expedite the establishment of Malaysia's first national sepak takraw academy, with completion targeted by the end of this year.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision reflects the government's commitment to strengthening traditional sports and nurturing homegrown talent to compete at the highest levels
"We will make the sepak takraw academy a reality in this country. I believe sepak takraw — like football — is a sport that makes us proud, not just nationally but also regionally and globally.
"The academy can be completed before the end of this year because the Madani government is a government that works hard," he said in his speech at the launch of National Youth Day here today.
Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.
Anwar said Hannah had requested an allocation of RM6 million for the project, which will serve as a platform to develop young athletes and raise the sport to greater heights.
He also acknowledged the growing interest among Malaysian youth in both traditional and modern recreational activities, saying these pursuits should be supported as long as they remain within cultural values and norms.
"This is part of our cultural heritage — from cities to kampungs, from youth who dance for leisure to those who play futsal and football.
"As long as it stays within the boundaries of proper conduct, we support it," he said.
He added that the unity government would continue prioritising youth empowerment through sports, arts, and positive community engagement, in line with the Madani vision.
Anwar also announced that the government has agreed to allocate RM4 million to the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) to strengthen youth development.
He said the decision followed a request by the council's president, Mohd Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid.
"This is an increase of RM1 million from last year's allocation, which saw an additional RM3 million channelled to the Youth and Sports Ministry.
"Everyone is asking for allocations — whispering to me — and because we practise good governance, we make sure leaders don't plunder billions."

Anwar records 55 pct approval rating at mid-term mark

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has secured a 55 per cent approval rating as his administration reaches the halfway point of its term, according to a Merdeka Center survey. The mid-term poll suggests that more Malaysians are optimistic about the country's direction, citing political stability, institutional reforms, and economic recovery as key contributing factors. The research house found that Anwar, who leads a government with a two-thirds parliamentary majority, has benefited from easing political turbulence and institutional reforms, including the revival of the Parliamentary Services Act 2025 - seen as a return to principled governance. On the economic front, government data showed that inflation dropped to 1.4 per cent in March - the lowest in three years - while the country recorded 4.4 per cent growth in the first quarter of 2025. Recent measures such as a minimum wage hike to RM1,700, festive cash aid for civil servants, and continued fuel subsidies were viewed as helping ease public concerns over the rising cost of living. Despite the removal of diesel subsidies in 2024, the absence of major price shocks has contributed to improving public sentiment. Malaysia's global standing has also improved, with Anwar's diplomatic efforts - including hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping and chairing Asean in 2025 - enhancing his image at home. "His leadership on Global South initiatives and the signing of new investment and trade deals were also cited as positive developments," the report stated. Nonetheless, the survey found that domestic economic concerns still weigh heavily on voters' minds. "While Anwar's personal ratings remain positive, only 50 per cent of respondents expressed satisfaction with the federal government's performance, up from 40 per cent in June 2024. "Dissatisfaction levels dropped to 48 per cent from 58 per cent over the same period. "As for the country's overall direction, 50 per cent of voters still believe Malaysia is headed the wrong way, although this figure has declined from 61 per cent a year ago. "Those who felt the country was on the right track increased to 43 per cent, compared to just 29 per cent in June last year," the report read. Merdeka Center attributed continued public unease to national economic concerns and anxiety over upcoming subsidy cuts. The survey, conducted between May 12 and 23, involved 1,208 registered voters — comprising 52 per cent Malays, 29 per cent Chinese, 7 per cent Indians, and 12 per cent Bumiputera from Sabah and Sarawak — selected through random stratified sampling across age, gender, ethnicity and state.

TIC Bintulu To Potentially Contribute RM12 Bln To GDP -- PM Anwar

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- The Transitioning Industrial Clusters (TIC) initiative in Bintulu, Sarawak, has the potential to contribute an additional RM12 billion to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said this initiative is expected to create 19,000 new job opportunities and reduce carbon emissions by 21.35 million tonnes by 2040. 'This effort is in line with the state's aspirations towards net-zero carbon and strengthens Sarawak's position as the country's leader in the green industry,' he said in a post on X today. Earlier today, Anwar chaired the National Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council (MED4IRN) Meeting No 3/2025, an important forum for assessing progress and setting a new direction for the country's digital economy. The prime minister said that during the meeting, he was interested in the presentation regarding Sarawak's intention to develop a TIC in Bintulu. Anwar said the government agreed to adopt TIC as a national agenda as it is a strategic move that unites companies and public institutions to drive green economic growth, open up highly skilled job opportunities and reduce carbon emissions. Meanwhile, the meeting also discussed the implementation of GovTech Malaysia, including the MyGOV Malaysia application, which functions as the government's single digital gateway. 'Through the gateway, the rakyat can deal with various government agencies online without having to queue at the counter. 'This demonstrates the government's commitment to bring services closer to the people in a simple, efficient and transparent manner,' he said.
