I'll never forget this moment, says US Open champion Spaun

Khaleej Times6 days ago

J.J. Spaun achieved his dream of winning his first major golf title by capturing the US Open. Doing it with a 65-foot birdie putt on the last hole was pure magic.
Spaun birdied four of the last seven holes to win at Oakmont on Sunday, firing a two-over 72 to defeat Scotland's Robert MacIntyre by two strokes, clinching matters with his stunning putt at the 72nd hole.
"Just to finish it off like that is just a dream," Spaun said. "You watch other people do it... you see crazy moments. To have my own moment like that at this championship, I'll never forget this moment for the rest of my life.
Spaun drove the par-four 17th green to set up the tap-in birdie that put him ahead to stay, joining a list of birdie-birdie finishers to win the US Open that includes Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Tom Watson and Jon Rahm.
"It's definitely like a storybook, fairytale ending, kind of underdog fighting back, not giving up, never quitting," Spaun said. "With the rain and everything and then the putt, you couldn't write a better story. I'm just so fortunate to be on the receiving end of that."
Spaun, whose only prior PGA Tour win was the 2022 Texas Open, was a runner-up at the Cognizant Classic and Players Championship this year, losing a playoff to second-ranked Rory McIlroy at the latter.
"I just felt like you keep putting yourself in these positions, like eventually you're going to tick one off," Spaun said.
Spaun made bogeys on five of the first six holes, including the first three, and birdied four of the last seven.
"As bad as things were going, I just still tried to just commit to every shot," Spaun said. "I tried to just continue to dig deep. I've been doing it my whole life."
Spaun has been resilient. In 2018 he was diagnosed with one type of diabetes but treatment was ineffective. In 2021, Spaun found he had been misdiagnosed and had another type of diabetes.
On Sunday morning, he made an early trip for medicine.
"My daughter had a stomach bug and was vomiting all night long," Spaun said. "Kind of a rough start to the morning. I'm not blaming that on my start, but it kind of fit the mold of what was going on, the chaos."
A 96-minute storm delay was crucial, allowing Spaun to reset after his miserable start.
"I just needed to reset everything, kind of like start the whole routine over," Spaun said. "I felt like I had a really good chance to win the US Open at the start of the day. It just unravelled very fast.
"But that break was actually the key for me to winning this tournament."
That and his monster 65-foot birdie putt at the final hole.
"I was just in shock, disbelief that it went in and it was over," Spaun said. "I couldn't even believe what I witnessed when that went in."
Neither could his playing partner, Norway's 14th-ranked Viktor Hovland, who settled for his best US Open finish at third on 282.
"That was unbelievable," Hovland said. "After his start, it just looked like he was out of it immediately. Everyone came back to the pack.
"And then the one on 18, it's just absolutely filthy there."

'F1' movie star Brad Pitt finally gets to drive a Formula One car

Brad Pitt, whose new F1 movie is out next week, has now driven a Formula One car for real after testing a McLaren at Austin's Circuit of the Americas. The reigning world champions confirmed the Hollywood A lister drove a 2023 McLaren MCL60 car at the Texas track recently. Media reports said the British-based team had been carrying out a private test with F1 regular Lando Norris and F2 driver Alex Dunne. It was the first time 61-year-old Pitt, who plays the fictional racing driver Sonny Hayes in the Apple Originals movie, had driven a real Formula One car on track. The cars used in the making of the film were Formula Two cars, modified by Mercedes to look like real grand prix racers. Champions McLaren had teased the drive with a social media post of overalls with the initials BP and the caption "It's a Sonny day in Austin". Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton, a co-producer of the movie, said in March that Pitt had shown real speed while testing the F2 cars. "Watching Brad drive around at speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it's not something you can just learn overnight," he said. "The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness."

Club World Cup: Esperance clinch dramatic win while Harry Kane sends Bayern Munich through

Esperance de Tunis kept their Club World Cup hopes alive as the enigmatic Youcef Belaili scored in the 70th minute while goalkeeper Ben Said saved a penalty deep in second-half stoppage time to help defeat Los Angeles FC 1-0 in a dramatic contest in Nashville. Victory took Esperance level with Chelsea in Group D in second spot, after the English side lost 3-1 to Brazil's Flamengo earlier on Friday. In the game on Friday, referee Espen Eskas awarded a very late spot kick following a video review, ruling Khalil Guenichi had felled Marlon in the area. But Denis Bouanga drove his ensuing penalty kick into the dive of Said, the final salvo in a result that eliminated LA FC from tournament contention. The winners of Esperance's clash with Chelsea on Tuesday in Philadelphia will move on to the knockout phase. The Tunisians had an earlier penalty decision go against them 20 minutes before Belaili 's opener, when the Algerian attacker believed he had earned a spot kick after driving past Bouanga on the dribble. But Eskas was summoned to the monitor, and after consulting replays, ruled Bouanga wasn't guilty of a foul, and booked Belaili for simulation. That failed to halt the momentum for Esperance, however, who were the better side for most of the encounter and did allow LA FC to record a shot on target until second-half stoppage time. They were eventually rewarded when Amine Ben Hamida made a marauding run from the left flank. He was eventually halted by an LA's defence. But Belaili was first to the loose ball, and he drove his finish low and hard through goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. It appeared LA FC's fading tournament hopes would be given a lifeline after Eskas's second penalty decision, with the Gabon international Bouanga stepping forward. But Said dove to his left, and with Bouanga's placement very poor, the Tunisian goalkeeper kicked the ball wide of danger with his trailing leg. Harry Kane delighted Bayern Munich's England striker Harry Kane said he is relishing the Club World Cup 's 'special' atmosphere and is confident the German team can now go all the way. Kane scored the opener for Bayern in a 2-1 win over Argentina's Boca Juniors at Hard Rock Stadium that took his side through to the last 16. He said it had been a tough challenge in the heat and humidity of South Florida. 'There's something special about these World Cup games and next year will be the same,' he said with a nod to the 2026 World Cup. 'When you come off that pitch and you're sweating and you're dripping and you're cramping and you've given everything on the pitch. There's a special feeling inside, especially when you win. That's what we had today.' Boca responded to Kane's opener through Miguel Merentiel, but Michael Olise sealed the win six minutes from time. 'Really tough game. I thought the first half was really good, I mean we probably should have been 2 or 3-0 up. They hung in the game and the second half made it more difficult,' said Kane, who acknowledged the incredible support of more than 55,000 Boca fans in the 63,587 crowd. 'I mean it felt like an away game out there for sure, their fans were really loud. It was a great experience to play in front of them and I think that's what makes the win even more special, because it feels like a good away win,' he said. 'So we're really happy, really pleased and we'll sleep well tonight.' Bayern's win was the first for a European team against South American opposition in the tournament and Kane said he was enjoying pitting himself against opponents European clubs rarely face. 'I think it's great to experience different teams and I think you've seen in this tournament already, the South American teams especially have caused big problems for some of the European teams.

How Wydad can overcome Juventus challenge at Club World Cup

When Wydad Casablanca face Juventus in Philadelphia on Sunday, it will be more than just a meeting between Africa and Europe. It is set to be a collision of two clubs bound by eerily similar trajectories – giants in their domestic leagues defined historically by their pragmatism, defensive grit and institutional control. While Juventus swept aside Al Ain in their opening match, Wydad fell 2–0 to Manchester City but delivered a valiant display, consistently posing a threat throughout the game. With two teams boasting a similar style of play, how will this game fare? The tactical challenge Wydad and Juventus are, in essence, reflections of each other. Both tried to modernise last season – Wydad with Rhulani Mokwena, Juventus with Thiago Motta – aiming for a more expansive style. But when results faltered, both returned to what they knew best: stability over spectacle. Mohamed Amine Benhachem and Igor Tudor, trusted former players, were brought in to steady the teams and restore core values. Another striking similarity between the two sides was their tendency to draw too many games last season. While they avoided defeat, it often felt as though they had forgotten how to win. Wydad went unbeaten in their final 14 league matches, and although they suffered a first loss to Manchester City in this competition, they produced several chances that kept them in the game. Their tactical similarities should set up an interesting battle. While Wydad display a genuine threat on the counter, Juve thrill in the transitions. Both sides roar when allowed to display their vertical dynamism. The clash between the two sides might ultimately be settled by the efficiency of their strikers. Had Wydad proved more ruthless with their finishing against City, they may have walked away with something more. Benhachem admitted they had prepared to spring a few surprises in their opening match and they didn't disappoint, showcasing a bold and fearless style of play. Despite conceding early, they remained resilient and stuck to their game plan, buoyed by the thunderous support of their many fans. Tudor acknowledged that his side 'need to concede less on counter-attacks'. Wydad would do well to recognise that their strengths align with Juventus' vulnerabilities. The Italians showed flaws in their defensive positioning, and with greater discipline, Benhachem's men have a real chance to exploit it. Thembinkosi Lorch was Wydad's most dangerous threat, registering three attempts on goal. With a touch more precision, he could trouble a Juventus defence still missing its standout figure, Gleison Bremer. As for Nordin Amrabat, he was one of the best players on the pitch against City, displaying his talent in both phases of the game. Despite his efforts to carry the team forward, he was largely contained by City's cohesive midfield unit. He will need better support to orchestrate the patterns of play that can unravel Juventus in the middle of the park. Wydad's defending The Moroccan side succeeded in limiting City's firepower, but if they hope for a better outcome against Juventus, they will need to tighten up defensively. At times, their aggressive forward play left openings at the back that City were quick to exploit. Lapses in concentration coupled with mistakes on set pieces complicated matters. Under Tudor, the Bianconeri consistently win a high number of corners, indicating territorial dominance and sustained attacking intent. Randal Kolo Muani can won most of his aerial duels while Francisco Conceicao's dancing feet and Kenan Yildiz thunderous shots can rip apart some of the best defences. Wydad's backline must always maintain focus. Abdelmounaim Boutouil cannot display the same recklessness that was punished by Jeremy Doku while El Mehdi Benabid will be required to put in another strong performance between the posts. Juventus arrive full of confidence Juventus were eager to return to winning ways after a season that began with promise but ended in bitter disappointment. Tudor was determined for his side to turn the page. By fielding a strong starting XI, the Italians signalled their intent to take the tournament seriously. The team had visited US President Donald Trump before their opening match, with American player Timothy Weah admitting it was all 'a bit strange'. 'When he started talking about the politics with Iran and everything, it's kind of like, I just want to play football man,' added the son of George Weah, former President of Liberia. And football they played. It was Al Ain who produced the first chance but once Kolo Muani scored in the 11th minute, there was no looking back. While Juventus' attack deservedly took the spotlight, it was Alberto Costa who stole the show with a standout performance at right wing-back. Commanding the right flank, he notched two assists and delivered the kind of display that gives Tudor's side a sharp vertical edge. Pacey, assertive, and full of confidence, he's a threat Wydad will need to keep close tabs on.
