Rory McIlroy made an impressive start to the Travelers Championship to sit two shots off the lead before world number one Scottie Scheffler later laid down a marker to defend his title in Connecticut. Masters champion McIlroy had finished tied for 19th at the US Open over a punishing Oakmont course – but ended the weekend on a positive following a three-under-par final round, which was the joint best of the day. After picking up another couple, a further birdie at the 17th – from the best part of 30 feet having hit a fine recovery shot out of the rough and over the water onto the green – saw him finish six under with 64 to sit in a tie for second, two shots behind early clubhouse leader Austin Eckroat. There was, though, no such trouble for Scheffler, who never looked back after three birdies from the opening four holes. The American – who landed a third major title with the PGA Championship crown at Quail Hollow during May – then picked up an eagle on the 13th and another birdie at 15, before a bogey at the 17th was the only blemish on his eight-under 62. Violent storm hits Wichita golf course set to host Korn Ferry Tour event this week
Mother Nature was a nuisance all weekend at the U.S. Open in Oakmont, but a much more dangerous version struck a different golf event early Tuesday morning. A violent storm seems to have significantly damaged Crestview Country Club and much of the Korn Ferry Tour's infrastructure set up for the 2025 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open, which is scheduled to begin Thursday. Advertisement The storm system — which produced winds stronger than 100mph — knocked down trees and caused widespread power outages across Wichita and the surrounding area, according to KWCH in Kansas. Crestview Country Club has hosted this event every year since 2001. Tom Lehman won the inaugural Wichita Open in 1990, and the tournament has served as a launching pad for several stellar PGA Tour careers, with other past champions like David Duval (1993), Jason Dufner (2001) and Scott Piercy (2008). Jordan Spieth withdrew from the Travelers Championship on Thursday afternoon due to a neck injury, marking a first for him in his career. Spieth had made 297 starts in his career on the PGA Tour without having to withdraw from an event. "I've never withdrawn from an event ever anywhere at any level, so I didn't really know what to do," Spieth said. "It just became too much ... I don't know, it's unfortunate. I've been doing everything right, and I think it was just very random." Advertisement Spieth, who said he thinks he may have slept wrong last night, said he started to feel pain during his warmups on Thursday. He quit early to receive treatment, but things only got worse throughout the day. He was clearly struggling throughout the first half of his opening round at TPC River Highlands, too. Spieth looked like he was in pain with just about every swing, and he stopped to receive more treatment when he made the turn. Finally, Spieth called it after the 12th hole. He teed off at No. 13, but let out a massive grunt after making contact with the ball, clearly in a lot of pain. He was 5-over at that point, which had him at the bottom of the leaderboard. By then, he said, it was simply time to call it. "As I was out there playing, I couldn't, I just wasn't moving very well, and then it just got worse," he said. "I was just going to try to see if I could somehow get through at even. It's a weird situation with an elevated event and no cut and important points and stuff. It's like, well, what's the downside if I can finish off just finishing even if it's ugly, and then I hit my tee shot on 13, and it legitimately really hurt ... I was like, it's only going to get worse to finish the round, and it's not worth it. I thought that was the time." Advertisement Spieth has won 13 times on the PGA Tour in his career, most recently at the RBC Heritage in 2022. He has four top-10 finishes on Tour this season and he's only missed two cuts in 16 starts. Spieth entered this week at No. 44 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

It was clear he was dealing with some severe pain, as after one of his drives, he nearly fell to the ground as he groaned in pain. Through his 12 holes, Spieth had shot 5-over, with five of the holes he played resulting in a bogey. Advertisement The past few tournaments for Spieth have not been what he and his fans are used to from him to say the least. Spieth finished tied for No. 23 at the U.S. Open, tied for No. 7 at the Memorial Tournament, tied for No. 36 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and missed the cut at the PGA Championship. While this was another unexpected setback, some time off could help Spieth return to form.
