Sweden beats Denmark 6-2 to take bronze at ice hockey worlds
STOCKHOLM (AP) — Mikael Backlund and Marcus Johansson scored two goals each as Sweden beat Denmark 6-2 to take the bronze medal at the ice hockey world championship on Sunday.
It was the second straight third-place finish for Sweden while fourth place was the best-ever result for Denmark.
With a star-studded team of NHL players, Sweden was hoping to end a drought dating back to 2018 at a tournament jointly staged in the Swedish capital and the Danish city of Herning.
Lucas Raymond and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the hosts while Denmark got the goals from Nick Olesen and Nikolaj Ehlers.
Despite the loss, it was a tournament to remember for Denmark.
The Danes opened the competition with three straight losses and squeezed into the quarterfinals by prevailing over Germany 2-1 in a shootout in the final group stage game.
Then the team made history by reaching the semifinals for the first time by stunning a Canada team led by Sidney Crosby 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
It was Denmark's second win over Canada after also winning 3-2 at the 2022 worlds.
Switzerland proved too strong for the Danes in the semis, routing them 7-0.
Denmark added to the successes of less-accomplished hockey nations in the 2023 edition of the tournament when Germany took silver for its first medal since 1953 and Latvia won bronze for its first top-three finish.
The United States and Switzerland meet in the gold medal game later Sunday.

Viktor Hovland with a neck injury is among 3 players to withdraw at Travelers
Associated Press CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Viktor Hovland withdrew after two holes at the Travelers Championship on Sunday when he felt soreness in his neck on the range and the pain became worse. Hovland was among three players to withdraw from the PGA Tour's signature event. Eric Cole, who was tied for 14th, pulled out before the round started with an illness. Matti Schmid withdrew after playing four holes. Hovland said he felt great while warming up until deciding to hit a couple of drives and then he felt something in his neck. 'It felt fine, didn't feel hardly anything at all, just felt like something was maybe brewing,' Hovland said. 'Then the next shot that I hit with a driver it just felt like ... it just cracked. I don't know exactly what happened, but there's something that happened and just couldn't move.' Hovland said he could barely stand over the ball and move his neck when he withdrew. Reds set to call up top pitching prospect Chase Burns from minors to start against Yanks
Associated Press ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds are preparing to call up top pitching prospect Chase Burns to start during their series against the New York Yankees this week. Burns, a 22-year-old right-hander, has rapidly moved through the minor leagues after Cincinnati drafted him with the No. 2 pick last year from Wake Forest. Burns is 7-3 with a 1.77 ERA in 13 starts at three minor-league levels this year, including two with Triple-A Louisville. 'It's kind of hard to come up with a reason why we shouldn't,' Reds manager Terry Francona said Sunday. 'They tried to throw a lot at him. He just kind of handled everything. The Reds' rotation is short-handed after starters Hunter Greene and Wade Miley went on the injured list earlier this month. Nick Lodolo is scheduled to start Monday's series opener against New York, and the 6-foot-3 Burns is in line to make his debut Tuesday. 'It's another game, but it is a major league team, He's going to have a lot of firsts, but he's handled everything so far,' said Francona, whose team entered Sunday with a 39-38 record and in fourth place in the NL Central. 'And I think there's an excitement, and, you know, I think the front office, they're trying to help us win, and I think we appreciate that.'
