Islamic New Year 2025: UAE announces private sector holiday dates
The United Arab Emirates has announced the official private sector holiday date for Islamic New Year.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emitarisation (MOHRE) revealed that Friday June 27 will be the official Islamic New Year holiday for private sector workers.
While the exact start of the Islamic New Year won't be confirmed until a moon sighting on the evening of Wednesday June 25, the Islamic New Year holiday will be on Friday June 27.

The announcement means that private sector workers in the UAE will enjoy at least a three-day long weekend.
A post on Instagram from MOHRE read:
'We announce that Friday, June 27, will be an official paid holiday for all employees in the private sector across the UAE on the occasion of the Hijri New Year.'
The confirmation follows an announcement from The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources, which originally announced that Friday June 27 would be a public holiday for all government employees.
The occasion of the Islamic New Year itself is yet to be confirmed, with a moon-sighting required to mark the first day of the month of Muharram and the start of the Hijri year 1447 AH.
The Islamic calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, unlike the more widely used Gregorian calendar, which is based on the sun.
The lunar calendar is used predominantly by Muslims around the world to determine the dates of religious events and observances.
Current astronomical predictions indicate that the Islamic New Year date should fall on Thursday June 26 in the UAE, which would split the Dubai working week.
However, if Dhu Al Hijjah is a 30-day month, then Islamic New Year will fall on Friday June 27 instead.
Planning your next trip? Here are all the days off still to come in 2025.

As Trump strikes Iran, the US - which launched Iran's nuclear programme - now seeks to end it
So the country which launched Iran's nuclear programme is now the country seeking to end it. Seven decades after President Eisenhower and the Shah cooperated on the Atoms for Peace programme, President Trump is at war with Iran, insisting not doing so risks global security. Unfortunately, for the region and the world, by doing so he risks exactly the same thing. Trump gave diplomacy a two week deadline, that deadline lasted less than two days. With Trump's demands for an 'unconditional surrender' ignored by the Islamic leadership, it fell to the B2 bombers of the United States Air Force to try and destroy Iran's nuclear assets, taking over where Israel failed. The consequences are likely to stretch far beyond their targets. Iran says any form of US military intervention will be met with 'irreparable harm'. 'This nation will never surrender to imposition from anyone,' the Ayatollah has already warned. American bases in the region are likely to be the first to be targeted. The assets in Iraq are likely to be particularly hard hit by in country Shia militia loyal to Iran. It is likely Iran's other proxies, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen may also enter the fray. Though significantly weakened by a structural decapitation by Israel over the past 18 months, Hezbollah do still have the weapons to strike Israel. The Houthis have the power to strike Israel and ships in the Red Sea. They have form for both and could step up their actions. A easy target would be the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow shipping lane between Iran and Oman. Around a quarter of global oil supplies and a third of liquified natural gas production moves though that stretch. So too thousands of containers ships. You don't need to be an expert in trade or economics to work out the knock-on effect of Iran effectively closing it. And let's not forget global terrorism would be another weapon in Iran's arsenal. All that is before we even consider the other objective, regime change. The regional destabilisation that would trigger would destroy that 'golden age' vision Trump spoke of on his recent Middle East trade tour. Then he eulogised a region defined by commerce not chaos. His own actions may render his words worthless. Without doubt his allies in the Gulf have sought his ear over these past weeks, desperate to avoid such a scenario. It seems even their bank balances have not been enough to reign in their erstwhile ally or weaken the seemingly unbreakable alliance with Israel. Iran in its current form may not be the neighbour the Gulf states would chose but it is better than a chaos of a power vacuum. By taking action President Trump may hope he can bring this conflict to a speedier end. He may yet discover, like so many before, the dreadful dangers of a Middle Eastern war. They take political lives as well as civilian ones.

Penny Lancaster and Rod Stewart in loved-up photos from lavish anniversary trip
Loose Women's Penny Lancaster and Rod Stewart have been in Portofino for their wedding anniversary after having travelled to the destination on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express Sir Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster looked loved-up on their trip abroad together this week. They have embarked on a tour of locations that are special to them as the couple celebrate the 18th anniversary of their wedding. Rod, 80, and Penny, 54, got married in Portofino on the coast of Italy in 2007, with the anniversary of their nuptials having been on Monday. The pair tied the knot at former monastery La Cervara and have now returned to the area. Loose Women panelist Penny has shared updates from the trip on Instagram this week. It included posting footage yesterday from a boat trip as she spotted the cliffside property where she married Rod from the water beneath it. Penny focused on the wedding venue in the clip and referenced the recent anniversary that she celebrated with her husband in the caption that accompanied it. She told her followers in the post: "Where we said I do 18 years ago." She's since shared photos from the holiday, including one of herself and Rod cosied up together whilst holding ice cream cones. The couple were seen smiling as they stood together. She used a sticker on the post today that read: "I love you." Another photo showed them sat at a restaurant sporting clothing protectors as they eat a meal. Penny teased in the caption: "Making a mess of ourselves". The post, uploaded this afternoon, included Dean Martin 's song That's Amore. Earlier today, Penny had shared a selfie of herself from the trip and included a sticker that read: "Good morning." Later, prior to posting the photos of herself and Rod together, she shared showcased some drinks and appetizers. It comes after the couple had announced the trip away together earlier this week. Penny and Rod, in a joint post shared on Thursday, had revealed that they would travel on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express to the destination. Penny shared at the time that they were boarding the luxury train in France. She said that they would travel from Paris, which is where they got engaged in 2005, to Portofino, which is where they had got married two years later. The post included a photo of Penny and Rod posing outside one of the carriages. She was seen wearing a floral outfit on the platform, whilst her husband opted to board the train in a pink jacket, white shirt and matching trousers instead. Alongside the photo, Penny said it was a "magical" experience. She wrote: "Entering a bygone era @vsoetrain from Paris where we got engaged to Portofino where we got married 18 years ago, it's totally magical @sirrodstewart."

New Edinburgh bakery opens on former site of popular business in capital
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A new bakery has launched on Leith Walk, replacing a popular business that shut its doors less than a month ago. Sloe Lane Bakery opened on Saturday, June 21, replacing Hobz Bakery, which closed weeks before on May 31. Some of the team from Hobz has stayed on to work at Sloe Lane which is now up and running in the same premises. Bosses at the new bakery took to social media to wish the previous eatery staff farewell and to announce the launch of the new cafe. They said: "[Hobz] will be greatly missed, and we wish them every success and happiness in their next chapter. "They created something truly special and we hope to carry that spirit forward. We're lucky to have some of their wonderful team staying on with us - so please do pop by and say hello! "We'll be serving exceptional coffee and freshly baked pastries, made with care and intention. At Sloe Lane, we believe in baking with love, taking our time, and celebrating the best of Scotland's seasonal and local ingredients and suppliers. "Our name reflects our wish to create a place where people can slow down - inspired by the gentle rhythm of Leith Walk and the sloe berry, a symbol of our connection to nature." Hobz Bakery closed on Saturday, May 31, with plans to reopen at a new location in the East Neuk of Fife next year. Owner, Matt, shared the news with his customers on Instagram at the time. He said: "Hobz has been too successful, too fast. When I started baking from my flat in 2021, Hobz was only a weekly side project. It quickly grew into the bakery it is today. "In all honesty, I never imagined Hobz would be where it is now. We've been listed in many publications as one of the best bakeries in the UK, among other bakeries that I look up to and admire, even though I have trouble accepting anything we make is any good. "About a year ago I realised that we needed to expand, and began to look for a larger unit in Edinburgh."
