Science week targets rural participation
National Science Week (MSN) is reaching out to students in rural and remote areas through the MSN carnival, Kembara Sains Borneo and Rehlah Sains programmes.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said the programme aimed to spark students' interest in science and technology, particularly among those with limited access to these fields.
'Thirty rural schools in Sabah and Sarawak have been selected for this initiative, which is expected to benefit around 30,000 students,' he said after launching National Science Week 2025 in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak.
In his speech, Chang said MSN, now in its eighth edition, reflected the ministry's commitment to embedding science, technology and innovation into the daily lives of all Malaysians.
He added that the initiative would be extended to grassroots communities through the implementation of on-ground programmes throughout Malaysia, as reported by Bernama.
Themed 'Democratising Science, Humanising Technology, Mainstreaming Innovation', MSN 2025 emphasises inclusive participation in advancing scientific innovation in step with rapid technological progress, and runs until the end of the year.

It was held at SJK(C) Kuok Ming, Tawau, in conjunction with Kembara Sains Borneo 2025. During the launch, Ezarisma Azni Mohamad, Chief Executive Officer of Petrosains said: 'As a social impact arm under Petronas, Petrosains is committed to democratising access to science and technology education, with a clear mission to spark interest, open up opportunities, and ultimately help individuals realise their full potential in STEM education.' He said: 'Sabah is the first and only state to host Petrosains Discovery Rover this year, making this launch profoundly significant for us. This emphasises our commitment to providing inclusive access to education, particularly in driving STEM literacy and empowering future talent, especially in rural and underserved communities.' The initiative is expected to benefit more than 5,000 students statewide. This effort complements Petrosains' long-standing presence in the state through its satellite centre, Petrosains PlaySmart Kota Kinabalu, which has welcomed over one million visitors since its inception in 2012. Petronas continues to uphold its commitment to advancing education and human capital development in Sabah through various high-impact initiatives. These include support for the establishment of the Tawau and Sandakan Science Centres, aimed at nurturing interest in science and technology through interactive exhibits and educational programmes. In 2023, a Petronas-led programme in Tawau involved the participation of 520 students and 65 teachers to raise awareness about the Petronas Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP). In August 2024, Yayasan Petronas launched an initiative to enhance internet connectivity at SMK Wallace Bay, Pulau Sebatik, benefiting 25 teachers and 293 students, with plans to expand to the surrounding community. The school also hosts teacher Azrinsyah Abdul Aziz, a participant of the Program Duta Guru – Yayasan Petronas' flagship initiative aimed at upskilling 4,500 STEM teachers in underprivileged schools nationwide by 2030. In addition, through the WeHelp Programme led by the Sabah State Education Department in collaboration with Yayasan Petronas, Petronas Floating LNG, UTP, and SLB, Petronas has contributed 17,190 scientific calculators to students across the state. The event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Petronas and two institutions – Institut Latihan Teknik dan Perdagangan Papar and Kolej Teknologi Yayasan Sabah – under the Petronas Vocational Institution Sponsorship and Training Assistance (VISTA) programme, further strengthening vocational education in Sabah. Kembara Sains Borneo, running as part of the National Science Week initiative, covers selected areas in southern Sarawak and ends in Tawau, Sabah. The programme, organised by Pusat Sains Negara (PSN), supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and strategic partners including the National Planetarium, Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia, and Petrosains, seeks to provide hands-on science learning opportunities for students in the remote areas across Sarawak and Sabah.

Petrosains Discovery Rover makes exclusive Sabah stop to promote STEM to rural students
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has been chosen as the first and only state to host the Petrosains Discovery Rover this year, bringing the excitement of hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning directly to communities in remote areas. The Petrosains Discovery Rover, a mobile exhibition truck equipped with interactive STEM exhibits, will tour over nine districts across the state. Petrosains' chief executive officer, Ezarisma Azni Mohamad, said the initiative aims to ignite interest in STEM among students while upskilling teachers with tools and techniques for more engaging classroom delivery. UTM A Prove mettle, Crowned Champions Of Robocon Malaysia 2025
BATU PAHAT, June 19 (Bernama) -- Despite early setbacks during the prototype development phase, the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) A team refused to give up and went on to emerge as champions of the 2025 Malaysian Robocon Competition at university level. Team leader Moh Nian Chun said he and his five teammates constantly sought solutions to ensure their robot functioned smoothly, in line with this year's competition theme - 'basketball match'. The student from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering said the idea to build two robots with distinct roles – one as an attacker and the other as a defender – began in November, and both robots were successfully completed within six weeks. 'In the beginning, our robot, which was made of steel, had problems moving smoothly due to its weight. 'We had to change materials several times, and after a few demonstration sessions and input from senior students, we finally chose aluminium as the robot's main material,' he said when met after the prize-giving ceremony here today. The prize-giving ceremony was held at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and officiated by Deputy Director-General of Higher Education (Governance and Development), Ahmad Rizal Adnan, together with UTHM Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Abdul Rashid Abdul Razzaq. Moh said the team also conducted several trial demonstrations to prepare for the actual competition, and their continuous efforts paid off when they were crowned champions and will now represent Malaysia at the international level. 'Our next challenge is to compete in the ABU Robocon International Competition, which will be held from Aug 23 to 25 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. We will do our best to bring glory to the country,' he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad Rizal said the competition, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) since 2002, is not merely a robotics contest but a strategic platform to foster a culture of innovation and technology among undergraduates.
