American University of Sharjah to advance cloud-enabled research

American University of Sharjah (AUS) will transform its research environment and accelerate the adoption of advanced cloud technologies through a new collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Through this partnership, AWS will provide AUS with technical, infrastructural and strategic support, enabling the university to strengthen its digital foundation and expand cloud fluency across its community.
Dr. Tod Laursen, Chancellor of AUS, commented on the significance of the agreement: 'This agreement positions AUS at the forefront of cloud-powered research and academic innovation. By working closely with AWS, we are creating an ecosystem that enables our faculty and students to engage with the world's most advanced technologies and apply them to the challenges of today and tomorrow. This is a strategic investment in our academic mission, institutional capacity and regional impact.'
A key component of the agreement is the establishment of a Cloud Center of Excellence at AUS. This center will lead efforts to promote cloud adoption, develop governance frameworks and guide digital transformation initiatives across the university. Through targeted activities — including training programs, best-practice frameworks and knowledge-sharing platforms — the center will help expand internal AWS expertise and align cloud initiatives with the university's long-term strategic goals.
AWS will also provide AUS with access to its technical experts and solutions architects, offering ongoing support to help design and optimize cloud environments that serve the university's research and academic needs. The collaboration includes AWS Immersion Days focused on AWS solutions related to research workflow enhancement, data analytics, cost optimization and cloud security.
AWS-certified speakers will further engage with AUS through participation in on-campus research events. These events will highlight case studies, best practices and explore the practical application of cloud technologies in research, helping AUS scholars connect innovation with real-world impact.

American University of Sharjah (AUS) has achieved its strongest results in the QS World University Rankings, climbing 60 places to reach 272 globally in the 2026 edition released on Thursday. This new position places AUS among the top 18 per cent of institutions worldwide-a consistent upward trend since 2018. The results reflect marked improvements across indicators such as employer reputation, academic reputation and citations per faculty. Globally, AUS ranked third for international faculty and fourth for international student diversity. Within the UAE, AUS ranked first for employer reputation and international student diversity and second for employment outcomes. It also retained its position among the top three universities nationally overall and made notable progress in academic reputation-rising from the top five to third place. It also maintained its strong standing in the top three nationally for international faculty. Sheikha Bodour addresses the conference at the American University of Sharjah. The university launched six new research centres last year and continues to strengthen its research capabilities, with a focus on delivering real-world impact. Recent advances have included several patents for a targeted breast cancer therapy using immunoliposomes-tiny, fat-based carriers designed to deliver drugs directly to cancer cells-combined with ultrasound; compact radars for mini drones; and the launch of AUS' first university spin-off, ClymAct, which leverages blockchain technology to enable transparent carbon trading. Over the past couple of years, AUS has also increased its degree programs by about 33 percent, notably at the doctoral and master's levels. "With our comprehensive academic portfolio comprising of 33 undergraduate majors, 48 undergraduate minors, 21 master's degrees and eight PhDs, 354 world-class faculty members-of which approximately 92 percent hold terminal degrees-and one of the most vibrant and diverse student bodies anywhere in the world, AUS is poised for growth and ready to take a bold step into the next stage of its international higher education journey,' said Chancellor Laursen.
