Shanaya Kapoor's ‘stiff moves' in Guru Randhawa's music video Vibe disappoints internet: 'Female Salman Khan is dancing'

Hindustan Times16-05-2025

Sanjay Kapoor and Maheep Kapoor's daughter, Shanaya Kapoor, is gearing up for her Bollywood debut with the film Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan. Before hitting the big screen, however, she made her first appearance in a music video titled 'Vibe' alongside singer Guru Randhawa. The internet, though, seems less than impressed with her dancing skills, with many calling her performance 'stiff'. On Friday, Guru and Shanaya released their new music video, which shows the pair enjoying a lively time in a casino before dancing together. The track, performed by Guru Randhawa and French Montana, is presented by Gulshan Kumar and T‑Series. While fans appreciated the upbeat music and Guru's vocals, many were disappointed by Shanaya's lack of expression and flexibility on the dance floor.
The song quickly surfaced on Reddit, where users shared their views. One wrote, 'Face is too stiff, so no expressions—just bland. For dance, I would rather watch a puppet.' Another criticised the choreography: 'What even is that step? It looks like a workout.' Yet another joked, 'Female Salman Khan is dancing.' One comment read, 'She's so, so, so, so, so bad! Not a single expression! Girl, please quit and retire!' Another user compared her to Guru: 'Guru is dancing better than her.' One more observed, 'Guru, being a singer, is in my opinion a better dancer.' Someone else quipped, 'When you take 'Any Body Can Dance' title so seriously.'
Some even defended her, saying, 'I think it's just the choreography—the background dancers look stiff as well.' Another commented, 'I think she looks beautiful.' One user noted, 'Well, she clearly can't dance, but the choreographer also didn't invent or create any good moves, so this looks poor from all angles.'
Shanaya will make her Bollywood debut with Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan alongside Vikrant Massey. Helmed by Santosh Singh, the film is inspired by Ruskin Bond's short story 'The Eyes Have It' and is described as a musical drama. It is scheduled for release in cinemas on 11July.
Shanaya also has Bejoy Nambiar's film Tu Yaa Main in the pipeline. The movie, which also stars Adarsh Gourav, follows two social‑media influencers attempting to escape a man‑eating crocodile in a survival thriller. Produced by Anand L. Rai, it will be released on Valentine's Day next year.

Deepika Padukone's 8-Hour Shift Request Isn't New, Says Siddharth P Malhotra: 'Kajol, Rani Did It Too'

Siddharth P Malhotra supports Deepika Padukone's 8-hour shift demand, reveals Kajol and Rani Mukerji made similar requests years ago. Calls media chatter 'publicity'. Last month, reports surfaced that Deepika Padukone had opted out of Sandeep Reddy Vanga's upcoming film Spirit, allegedly due to working condition concerns—including a request for an eight-hour workday. The development came eight months after the birth of her daughter, Dua Padukone. Weighing in on the matter, filmmaker Siddharth P Malhotra—who helmed Junaid Khan's debut film Maharaj and directed Rani Mukerji's comeback film Hichki—stated that such requests are not new and have existed in the industry for years. 'We finished Hichki, the whole film, in 28 eight-hour shifts," Malhotra told IANS. 'Whether it was Rani (Mukerji), the kids, the cameramen or the spot boy, everyone finished in that time." Hichki, produced by Yash Raj Films, marked Rani Mukerji's return to the screen after the birth of her daughter Adira in December 2015. Recalling that emotional period, Rani had said, 'For 14 months, I have been there in front of her face. So I kept asking myself, 'Is it going to be worth it?'" She even confessed to 'howling in the car" on her first day back on set. Malhotra explained that every project comes with its own expectations and timelines, but the concept of eight-hour workdays isn't unprecedented. 'It's been happening for years. When I'd shot with Kajol in 2010, she used to do eight-hour shifts. She made it very clear she'd either come from 10 am to 6 pm, or 7 am to 2 pm, or for an eight-hour shift at night. Rani also did the same. Deepika isn't demanding anything new." Kajol recently supported the same practice in an interview with PTI, stating, 'I didn't work for 20 or 30 hours. I was always very clear that we would work a certain amount only, and my mom (veteran actor Tanuja) also backed me up big time on it." Addressing the controversy around Deepika's exit, Malhotra added, 'If I need an actor and am confident I can finish the film within those working hours, I'd work with them even for six hours a day. This isn't actor-specific. People are just gaining publicity in the name of Deepika Padukone. She's asking for family time, what wrong is she demanding?" He also remarked that if Vanga required longer hours from his female lead, the director could always adjust the schedule accordingly or cast someone else. 'If the director can't accommodate the timeline, they can simply choose to work with another actor," he said. Following Deepika's reported exit, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga has signed Animal breakout star Triptii Dimri as the lead opposite Prabhas in Spirit. The film, backed by Bhushan Kumar's T-Series, is scheduled to release in cinemas next year. First Published:

‘Only Nora Fatehi could pull off those dance moves in Garmi, it didn't look vulgar': Choreographer Kruti Mahesh

Kruti Mahesh, who was a contestant on the reality show Dance India Dance season 2 in 2009, rose the ranks when she assisted Remo D'Souza on the popular Holi dance number 'Balam Pichkari' in Ayan Mukerji's 2013 blockbuster romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. While choreographing 'Garmi', a dance number in D'Souza's 2020 directorial Street Dancer 3D, she got a lot of flak for Nora Fatehi's pelvic movements in the song. Now, she has opened up on the criticism and lauded Nora for pulling off the tricky dance moves sans any vulgarity. 'Every person representing something on the camera has an image. She can pull off (anything). Mind you, it still didn't look vulgar. It still had its own charm, the way she did it,' said Kruti in an interview with Just Too Filmy. She added, 'If it was somebody else, I wouldn't have had them do it. It was only because it was Nora and she's capable of making something like that… Nora. Otherwise it didn't make sense.' The choreographer revealed that Nora also pushes her to do something new and challenging because as a dancer, she's willing to take up those risks. 'In African dances, what you see right now and call 'twerking,' it's their folk style, it's what they do as street folk, it's their way of expression. So, if you're going to watch it with a certain mindset, then I'm sorry but films are not meant to be watched like that. It's someone's vision,' said Kruti. 'Garmi', sung by Badshah and Neha Kakkar, featured Nora Fatehi alongside Varun Dhawan. Produced by Remo D'Souza Entertainment and Bhushan Kumar's T-Series, Street Dancer 3D is a dance film also starring Shraddha Kapoor, Raghav Juyal, Aparshakti Khurana, Sonam Bajwa, Upasana Singh, Zarina Wahab, and Manoj Pahwa among others. Kruti Mahesh has also choreographed Shraddha in 'Sun Sathiya' from Remo's 2015 dance film ABCD 2, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra in 'Pinga' and Deepika in 'Deewani Mastani' from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2015 period romance Bajirao Mastani, Alia Bhatt in 'Meri Jaan' and 'Dholida' from Bhansali's 2022 period drama Gangubai Kathiawadi, and Wamiqa Gabbi in 'Vo Tere Mere Ishq Ka' from Vikramaditya Motwane's 2023 period show Jubilee on Prime Video India. She choreographed the folk-pop song alongside Jyothi D Tomar, an exponent of Rajasthan's folk dance ghoomar. Kruti has most recently choreographed Trisha Krishnan in 'Sugar Baby' from Mani Ratnam's Tamil crime thriller Thug Life.
