David Tennant admits he wanted Marvel superhero role that went to Pedro Pascal
David Tennant has revealed he had 'his eye on' the role of Reed Richards in the Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four but it unfortunately went to Pedro Pascal instead.
David Tennant has admitted that he had been eyeing up a superhole role that ended up being grabbed up by fellow actor Pedro Pascal. The Scots actor is best known for his role in Doctor Who with his most recent role coming as the villain Tony Baddingham in Disney+'s hit show Rivals.
However, it's now emerged that the 54-year-old has been keen to take on a new character as he confessed he was interested in playing the role of Richard Reeds, aka Mister Fantastic, the leader of Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four. During an appearance at MCM Comic Con in London this weekend, Tennant said: 'In terms of superheroes, I don't know, I did slightly have my eye on Reed Richards, and unfortunately, it looks like they've gone in a different direction.
'Although if it has to be someone, I'm happy for it to be Pedro Pascal, frankly.' Tennant had been asked by a fan about which superhero or villain role he'd love to play, regardless of whether someone else had taken the part already.
He replied: 'I would have quite liked to be Reed Richards. I'd quite like to be able to do all that,' he said, stretching his arm out to imitate the character's powers to stretch to extraordinary lengths.
He continued: 'So I'll stick with that even though it's gone, even though it's gonna be a while before there's another go at that, I think, unfortunately.
"I think Pedro Pascal is great. I'm very, very pleased that he exists.'
Pascal, 50, is best known for his roles as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, Javier Peña in Narcos, and most recently as Joel Miller in The Last of Us.
He mentioned earlier that he felt he got 'the best' supervillain with the character of Kilgrave opposite Krysten Ritter in the Netflix show Jessica Jones.
Marvels' Mister Fantastic, has been depicted in TV and film multiple times, including by Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd in the 2005 movie Fantastic Four and a 2007 sequel which made a combined $630m.
The Reed Richards character is now set to appear in the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films The Fantastic Four: First Steps, scheduled for release this year, in Avengers: Doomsday, out in 2026, and in Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
It was announced in February last year that Pedro Pascal had bagged the role of Reed Richards.
He was cast along with The Crown's Vanessa Kirkby as Sue Storm, aka Invisible Woman, The Bear's Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, aka The Thing and Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch.
Tennant has been back filming a new season of Disney+'s hit show Rivals, which is based on the best selling 1988 novel by Jilly Cooper as part of her Rutshire Chronicle series.
The series, which boasts a star-studded cast, made its debut on the streaming platform in October 2024.
Disney confirmed that shooting for the second season had commenced on May 21 with a series of behind-the-scenes snaps including Tennant and his co-stars Alex Hassell, Bella Maclean and Aidan Turner.
Other big names in Rivals include Danny Dyer, Emily Atack, Katherine Parkinson and Luke Pasqualino.

Netflix fans rave over gore-filled revenge thriller with 'the female John Wick' - insisting 'they could make 100 more and I'd watch every one!'
Netflix fans have raved over a gore-filled revenge thriller with 'the female John Wick ' and insisted 'they could make 100 more and I'd watch every one!' The Wrath Of Becky premiered in 2023 and has recently been added to the streaming platform. Packed full of action and blood, the highly acclaimed film stars Lulu Wilson as the titular lead character, a teenage girl. Becky moved in with a new caregiver, Elena, and finds herself seeking revenge after a trio of extremists cause her hassle and steal her pet dog. The film follows on from a 2020 prequel, called Becky, which saw the young girl lose her father after a group of Neo-Nazi convicts attacked their family's lake house. Fans have enjoyed the film over the years and many have left their verdicts online. One viewer penned on Letterboxd: 'I could watch Lulu Wilson play Becky in 10 more sequels.' Another said: 'She's basically the female version of a teenage John Wick.' While someone else reportedly penned: 'They could make 100 films about Becky slaying Proud Boys and Neo Nazis and I would watch every single one of them.' 'Solid revenge thriller with some lovely kills and a little twist of humour,' another added. One fan said: 'Omg I was on the edge of my SEAT the entire time this was so intense but also somehow comedic HOW do you do that at the same time?? Pls watch this SEQUEL NOW SEQUEL NOW.' 'Did not realise this was a sequel but still enjoyed watching it nonetheless. A good action film that gets straight to the point,' someone else penned. However, not everyone has enjoyed the film and one said: 'It's a no from me.' It comes as Netflix fans are captivated by another thriller 'full of twists and turns', gushing about how 'it kept them guessing until the very end' and binge-watching every episode in one sitting. Love Rat, first released to Channel 5 in March last year, follows Emma (Coronation Street 's Sally Lindsay), a woman at a crossroads in later life. Fans have enjoyed the film over the years and many have left their verdicts online with some taking to Letterboxd However, not everyone has enjoyed the film and one said: 'It's a no from me.' Just divorced from husband Pete (Men Behaving Badly's Neil Morrissey) and estranged from her daughter, she grows tired of mundane everyday life. In search of escape, she travels to Cyprus on holiday where she quickly embarks on a whirlwind romance with handsome, rich hotel owner Niko (Gerald Kyd) - but not all is as it seems. Emma suddenly finds herself scammed out of her life savings - and enlists her ex to help get them back. Fans have taken to film review and catalogue site IMDb to admire the four-part series, initially seemingly some fun in the sun, which turns into a psychological thriller. A newly released video shows the heartstopping moment she entered the record books as the first Scots woman to surf at Nazare. Robyn said: 'That was amazing.' The entire operation was a family affair with dad Marti eagerly watching on. Advertisement Before they headed out the protective father told Ben: "You look after her, right." On his Insta Ben, 20, said: 'I had a really good winter season this year but I think my highlight was taking my sister Robyn for her first session at Nazare. 'We had a great team of people. She was a natural.' Robyn and her brother were taught to surf by their dad on the Isle of Tiree, Argyll. Advertisement Ben has gone on to become a champion and travels the world with the Red Bull team. He's inspired his sister to get involved and she headed out to Portugal to take on the beautiful but deadly waves. I tried Scotland's only inland surf resort - I struggled to stand up but it was an amazing experience They waited days for the conditions to be right and she scored a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dad Marti, 52, said: 'I was just buzzing for her. She was grinning from ear to ear. Advertisement 'As the days passed I think she put a fair bit of pressure on herself and was maybe getting a bit of cold feet. 'But her brother built her confidence up and it was just amazing to see her out there.' Marti told how his kids have become names in the surfing world despite growing up on a Scots island with no surf community. He said: 'It's remarkable because there is not much of a background of surfing here. Advertisement 'They're a bit of an anomaly because usually you need a big surfing team around you. 'But they've made it through pure, natural talent. They are absolutely smashing it.' Robyn is set to compete for Scotland in July at the European Surfing Championships. While Ben is currently in Indonesia and is expected to have a bright future in the sport. Advertisement But for Marti every competition is nerve-wracking. He said: 'I am buzzing for them. But it's pretty dangerous and the consequences can be severe if something goes wrong. 'You rely on the people around you to keep you safe and get you out of trouble. Thankfully Ben has got a great team around him.'
