MADRID : Real Madrid lashed out at the Copa del Rey final referees on the eve of today's match, labelling complaints about pressure from the club's television channel 'unacceptable' and boycotting all planned pre-match activities in protest.
'These statements… made in a premeditated manner 24 hours before the final against one of the participants, demonstrate, once again, a clear and manifest animosity and hostility of these referees towards Real Madrid,' said Los Blancos in a statement.
Real Madrid refused to take part in the usual press conference, the open training in front of media, the traditional presidents' dinner and a pre-match photo-call.
Spanish media reported Real were considering boycotting the final itself if the referees were not changed, but the reigning La Liga champions released another statement denying that.
'Our team has never considered not playing in tomorrow's final,' said Real.
This week, the club's television channel aired a new video attacking the referee for the final at La Cartuja in Seville, something they have done to various officials this season.
The main match referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, welled up when speaking earlier yesterday about pressure officials have faced from Real Madrid TV over the past few months.
'Real Madrid considers the public statements made by the Copa del Rey final referees unacceptable,' said the club in their initial statement.
Real took particular issue with the final's VAR referee Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes suggesting referees were 'united' and looking to take collective action against the pressure they had received from Real Madrid TV.
Real said his words had 'a threatening tone' and suggested action would be taken that was 'far removed from the principles of fairness, objectivity and impartiality' necessary for the final.
'In view of the seriousness of what has happened, Real Madrid hopes that those in charge of the RFEF and the refereeing profession will act accordingly, adopting the relevant measures in defence of the prestige of the institutions they represent,' added Real.
Los Blancos published an open letter in February claiming Spanish refereeing was 'rigged' and 'completely discredited'.
Real Madrid have form when it comes to boycotts: in October they stayed away from the Ballon d'Or ceremony because their winger Vinicius Junior was not named the best player in the world.
'Real Madrid does not go where it is not respected,' the club said at the time.
'It's totally messed up'
De Burgos Bengoetxea had spoken about the effect criticism from Real Madrid's television channel was having on his family life.
'When a child of yours goes to school and there are kids telling him that his father is a 'thief' and comes home crying, it's totally messed up,' De Burgos Bengoetxea told a news conference.
'What I do is try to educate my son, to say that his father is honest, above all honest, who can make mistakes, like any sportsperson,' he continued, becoming emotional.
Wiping away tears, the 39-year-old called for deeper thought on the issue of referee abuse.
'Everyone should reflect about where we want to go, about what we want from sport and from football,' he added.
Gonzalez Fuertes had suggested officials could take further action over Real Madrid TV's broadcasts in the coming weeks.
'Have no doubt that we are going to have to start taking much more serious measures than we are taking,' said Gonzalez Fuertes.
'We will not continue to allow what is happening. Soon, you will hear from us.
'We are going to make history, because we are not going to continue to bear what we are putting up with.'
Real's behaviour drew ire from La Liga chief Javier Tebas.
'This is not football, this is about control of power,' said Tebas.
'(Real) leaks that they will not turn up at the cup final, what thin skin… they don't want to improve football, they want their own football.'

Bellingham to undergo shoulder surgery after Club World Cup final

CHARLOTTE, June 23 — Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham confirmed Sunday he will undergo surgery on a long-term shoulder issue after the Club World Cup ends. The England international has been struggling with discomfort after dislocating it in a La Liga match in November 2023, and playing with a brace under his shirt since then. With Madrid keen on securing Club World Cup victory, they scheduled the operation for after the final, with Bellingham potentially missing the start of the La Liga season as he recovers. 'I've got the point where... I'm fed up with the brace, and having to tug on it and having (other) players tug on it, and it rearranging all the time,' Bellingham told DAZN after Real Madrid beat Pachuca 3-1 in Charlotte. 'I've got a surgery scheduled for after the tournament, I think we scheduled it a few days after the final obviously, so I'll go and do the surgery and get it fixed. 'I'm really happy about that, it's been a long time coming. I think I've come to the end of my patience with the brace. 'The physio here and the doctor here have been unbelievable helping me to be fine playing game in game out, (but) I'm at that point now where I'm ready to have a free shoulder and free body in terms of the brace.' Recovery from the surgery could take up to 12 weeks according to reports, so as well as Madrid's first league games, he may also miss England World Cup qualifiers in September against Andorra and Serbia. Bellingham found the net in the win over Madrid's Mexican opponents, a day after his younger brother Jobe Bellingham struck for Borussia Dortmund. The Madrid midfielder said he had been thinking about getting even ahead of the Pachuca game, which was new coach Xabi Alonso's first victory at the helm of Los Blancos. 'Everyone's been caning me yesterday, saying he's better than me. I had to do something today,' he added. 'We're one-one now and we'll see for the rest of the tournament.' — AFP

RB Salzburg, Al Hilal tussle to 0-0 draw at Club World Cup

RB Salzburg and Al Hilal played to a scoreless draw in a Group H match of the Club World Cup on Sunday in Washington. Salzburg (1-0-1, 4 points), a 17-time Austrian Bundesliga champion, had an opportunity to become the first from Group H to advance to the quarterfinals but instead is second to Real Madrid (1-0-1, 4 points) on goal differential, which favors the Spanish club by one. They face each other in the final group match in Philadelphia on Thursday. Al Hilal (0-0-2, 2 points) of the Saudi Pro League, where they have won 19 titles, play Pachuca (0-2-0, 0 points), which has been eliminated, in Nashville on Thursday. Yassine Bounou made five saves for Al Hilal. His counterpart, Christian Zawieschitzky, had four. The match was played with pace despite a real-feel temperature of 99 degrees. Al Hilal came close to a breakthrough in the 81st minute when Sergej Milinkovic-Savic earmarked a shot for the bottom left corner from outside the box, but Zawieschitzky covered the post for the save. While Al Hilal finished with a 19-13 advantage in attempts, it was a frustrating afternoon for each side with numerous missed chances. Al Hilal had 10 of the 15 shot attempts in the scoreless first half. The problem was that Zawieschitzky needed to make just one save. It did help him that defender Jacob Rasmussen blocked a right-footed shot from Marcos Leonardo and cleared it from near the goal line in the 21st minute. Otherwise the lone Al Hilal shot on target was by Salem Al-Dawsari in the fifth minute. Salzburg put three of its five shots on target in the first half, including an opportunity in the ninth minute. Frans Kratzig sent a long overhead ball to Karim Onisiwo in the center of the box and he deftly flicked the ball toward keeper Yassine Bounou with the outside of his right foot.

Ten-man Real Madrid outclass Pachuca to stay on Club World Cup course

CHARLOTTE, June 23 — Real Madrid shrugged off an early red card to defeat Mexico's Pachuca 3-1 and take a big step towards the knockout stage of the Club World Cup on Sunday. The result leaves Madrid, under new head coach Xabi Alonso, on top of Group H with four points while Pachuca are eliminated after two defeats. Saudi club Al Hilal, who held Real in their opener, face second-placed Salzburg later on Sunday. The Spanish giants were in trouble after just seven minutes when Raul Asencio was shown a straight red card after he pulled down Salomon Rondon with the Venezuelan clear on goal. That left the Liga MX team sensing the chance for an upset in front of 70,248 fans at the home of the NFL's Carolina Panthers. Pachuca quickly went close when Brazilian Kenedy saw a shot parried out by Thibaut Courtois and the Belgian keeper did brilliantly to deny Alan Bautista's follow up shot. But Real were able to get a grip on the game in midfield and slow the pace down, limiting opportunities for Pachuca. It was a superbly worked team goal that provided the breakthrough for Madrid in the 35th minute. Gonzalo Garcia's clever flick released Fran Garcia down the left and he looked inside to Jude Bellingham who took the ball in his stride and then buried a left-foot shot into the corner. Two minutes before the break Real doubled their advantage when Trent Alexander-Arnold drilled a low cross in from the right and Arda Guler collected Gonzalo's deft lay-off and fired home. Pachuca created a pile of chances after the break, peppering Courtois's goal, but the Belgian was up to the task denying Brazilian substitute John Kennedy and efforts from Rondon and Bryan Gonzalez. Javier Eduardo Lopez missed the best opportunity for the Mexican side, firing wide after some sloppy defending from Madrid. The outcome was put beyond doubt in the 70th minute when Federico Valverde slid the ball home after a smart exchange with Brahim Diaz. Pachuca finally got some reward for their determined effort when Elias Montiel's shot on the turn was deflected off Aurelien Tchouameni and flew past the wrongfooted Courtois. Alonso, who tasted victory for the first time as Real coach, praised the way his team handled the early setback. 'We had to be defensively, for almost all the game with one player less and it became really intense for us, but we defended with a lot of sacrifice and solidarity which is what it takes,' he said. 'We waited for our chances, so I was really pleased with the performance with a player less,' he added. The Real coach said he was pleased to see his team's ability to change plan during a game. 'We want to have the culture that we understand situations, the structure, the context and we understand what it takes in each moment, with strong principles. 'I think that game intelligence gives you another edge and today I am pleased how they understood the quick change in the cooling break that we had,' he added. Pachuca coach Jaime Lozano said his team had failed to make the most of the extra man. 'We had a great start, (but) we did not make the most of our advantage. They have the strongest players in the world and their players were amazing. Their strongest feature is that they don't need to play at their best to win any match, they were amazing,' he said. — AFP
