Johor teacher's absence traced back to September as authorities uncover tragic details
JOHOR BARU, June 17 — The school authorities were mystified after chasing up various avenues to locate a female teacher who was reportedly absent from classroom duty since last September (2024), before the devastating news emerged of a decomposed body found at her home last Thursday.
Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the last time teacher Lo Kwan Fong, 39, contacted her school (in Johor Bahru) was on Sept 26, 2024 to inform it of her absence before she went elusive and became untraceable with futile attempts to contact her from Nov 10 of the same year.
'The teacher could not be contacted via phone calls, WhatsApp, short messaging service (SMS) and Messenger and Telegram apps. The school principal also issued a show-cause letter for the deceased's absence from duty on Nov 21 and Dec 19 last year.
'The teacher's phone number continued to be unreachable on March 12, 2025, causing the school to resort to various other ways to track her,' he said in a statement here today.
Aznan said among the methods used were through letters of inquiry sent to government agencies like the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Prisons Department, the Immigration Department and a letter requesting her address from the National Registration Department.
In addition, on Dec 29, 2024, the deceased's neighbour informed that the teacher had not returned home for a long time, going by the many letters and mail stuffed into the windows and door of her house, while her car was parked on the roadside nearby.
'The deceased was an only child and lived alone after her parents died,' he said, adding that the teacher was believed to have grappled with personal problems like depression.
Aznan stated that as of the night of June 13, the body of the deceased was still at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital here as no next of kin has come forward to claim it.
Yesterday, police confirmed the discovery of the decomposed body of a teacher at a house in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Iskandar Puteri near here, and believed that the deceased had died about a month ago. — Bernama

BUTTERWORTH, June 20 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is finalising the investigation papers for action to be taken in court against the bus company operator involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the investigation is now in the final stages before being handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on the charge recommendation. In the incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were in overturned in an accident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. SHAH ALAM, June 20 — A man was found dead inside a vehicle, believed to have been shot, in an incident outside a motorcycle shop in Meru, Klang, this afternoon. PETALING JAYA : A Masterchef Malaysia finalist and her former husband have been sentenced to 34 years in jail after they were found guilty by the Kota Kinabalu High Court of killing their domestic worker in 2021. Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Sulang's former husband, Ambree Yunos, was also sentenced to 12 strokes of the rotan while she was exempted because of her gender, Sabah Media reported. Ambree, a contractor, and Etiqah were charged with killing Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin, 28, at their condominium unit in Penampang between Dec 8 and Dec 11, 2021. They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty, or 30 to 40 years' jail, and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. Lim said the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case. He said the prosecution had proven three key elements – that the victim died from her injuries, that the injuries were caused by the two accused with intent, and that the pair had acted with a common intention. During sentencing, deputy public prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus sought the death sentence, saying the case had shocked both Sabah and the nation, and that it warranted the heaviest penalty possible. Dacia said the deceased was a young woman who had left her hometown for honest work amid the pandemic, but ended up losing her life at her workplace. She said the victim suffered daily and was denied her basic human rights. Ambree and Etiqah, who were represented by lawyers Ram Singh and Rakhbir Singh, were previously out on bail.
