Gmada to acquire 2,600 acres of land across Mohali to curb mushrooming of unauthorised colonies

: In a significant push towards curbing the mushrooming of illegal and unauthorised colonies, the
Greater Mohali Area Development Authority
(Gmada) is set to acquire land across the city. The

govt has approved the acquisition of nearly 2,600 acres of land across various sectors for commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential use.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the executive committee of Gmada here Friday. It was chaired by state chief secretary KAP Sinha.
As per the plan, 236 acres will be acquired in Sector 87 for commercial purposes, 313 acres in Sector 84 for institutional projects, and 321 acres in sectors 101 to 103 for industrial use. The biggest chunk — 1,800 acres — will be acquired in sectors 120 to 124 along the PR-7 road for residential development.
The acquisition is expected to begin within a month, pending final approval from chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who also heads the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority.
A senior Gmada official confirmed that with this move, no Change of Land Use (CLU) permissions will be granted to private developers in the targeted areas. "This will ensure regulated development and curb the unchecked spread of unauthorised colonies," he explained.
Particularly in sectors 120 to 123, several unauthorised colonies have mushroomed across nearly 50 acres in villages like Daun, Raipur, Behlolpur, Barmajra, Tarauli, and Jhampur. These were carved out of agricultural land without CLU approvals or the required official clearances.
The chief administrator has directed officials to submit a report within two days to fix responsibility for such violations. Authorities have also been instructed to use Google satellite imagery to identify illegal constructions and take immediate legal action.
The move is seen as a firm step towards enforcing urban planning norms and preventing haphazard growth in one of Punjab's fastest developing regions.

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Chief Secretary will be the chairman of all local urban planning and development authorities in the state, the state cabinet decided yesterday. The cabinet amended Section 29(3) of the Punjab Regional and Town Planning and Development (PRTPD) Act, thus empowering the Chief Secretary to head the development authorities, a move modelled after Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority in Gujarat and urban authorities of Noida, Meerut, Kanpur and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.

Shops in Ludh yet to put up signboards in Punjabi

Ludhiana: It's been more than two years since the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments (First Amendment) Rules, 2023 made it mandatory for shops and commercial establishments to have signboards in Gurmukhi Punjabi positioned "prominently" before any other language and occupying more space, most of them are yet to comply with it. On Feb 21, 2023, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann approved the amendment to the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Rules, making it must for all businesses to display signboards in Punjabi. The amendment, which inserted new rules 23 and 24, allowed businesses to use other languages, in addition to Punjabi. A time of six months had been given to comply with the new regulations. Failure to comply would invite a fine of Rs 1,000 and a subsequent fine of Rs 2,000. But many prominent hotels and businesses near Bhai Wala Chowk, Aarti Chowk and likewise several businesses and commercial establishments are yet to have the Gurmukhi versions of their names on their signboards. Though many MNCs, banks, etc., have put up such signboards, they are not sticking to the rules. Since the fine amount in Punjab is quite low, that is why the approach towards implementation of these rules is also too lax." District language officer Sandeep Sharma said they are ensuring that all govt buildings have the names in Punjabi displayed prominently. When asked, assistant labour commissioner Sarbjot Singh Sidhu too said it is being ensured that all new establishments have their name boards in Punjabi. "Majority of the bigger showrooms or MNCs have their names in Punjabi. Whenever a licence is given, it is part of the checklist to ensure that the names are in Punjabi. Whenever we receive any complaint regarding this, we educate and sensitise them so that they update the names in Gurmukhi as per rules. It is a shared responsibility of other departments, including ours, the language and GST departments as well," he added.

GMADA reduces rate for Sector 76–80 allottees, MLA urges timely payment to avoid interest

Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh Thursday announced relief to allottees of sectors 76 to 80 from GMADA in the long-pending enhancement charges issue. According to Singh, GMADA had earlier issued notices demanding Rs 3,164 per square yard from the allottees. But after reviewing the matter, GMADA has now reduced the enhancement rate by Rs 839 per square metre and now the allotees have to pay Rs 2,325 per square yard which is a big relief and could save each allottee lakhs of rupees. Speaking at a press conference, the MLA said, 'For the past 15–20 years, some leaders of Mohali have misled people for their own political gain, resulting in huge losses to residents. When GMADA initially issued enhancement notices, these leaders who were in power stopped the delivery of the notices so that people wouldn't question them. As a result, the amount ballooned with interest over time.' He emphasised that his efforts have led to a breakthrough meeting with GMADA chief administrator Vishesh Sarangal, where it was agreed to drastically reduce the enhancement charges for the affected sectors. The MLA added, 'No penalty or interest will be charged from those who haven't deposited the amount yet, and those who have already paid the penalty will either get a refund or an adjustment.' Singh blamed former minister Balbir Sidhu for the financial burden on residents, claiming that enhancement notices were blocked for political advantage during his 15-year tenure as MLA. 'The amount tripled from 2008 to 2025. I have always stood by the people of Mohali, and it was my duty to reduce their financial burden,' he said. The MLA appealed to all allottees of sectors 76–80 to deposit the revised amount at the earliest to avoid further interest, saying that this is the time to act. 'Relief has been given now, make sure you benefit from it.'
