University student pleads guilty to sexually assaulting his eight-year-old cousin in Sungai Buloh
KLANG, June 19 — A local university student pleaded guilty in the Sessions Court here today to three charges of physical sexual assault against a girl who is his cousin in 2023 and 2025.
Based on two charges, the 19-year-old man committed physical sexual assault against an eight-year-old girl on March 2 and 3 this year at a house in Sungai Buloh, Selangor.
For the third charge, he was also accused of committing the offence of physical sexual assault against the victim at the same house on September 10, 2023.
All the offences were charged under Section 14(a) and 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, and if convicted, the accused can be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than 20 years and can be whipped.
Previously, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur 'Ayuni Jamri requested a new date for the preparation of a social report from the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) considering that the accused is a young offender, in addition to being used as case facts and for sentencing.
Nur 'Ayuni did not propose any bail due to the accused having a familial relationship with the victim, but suggested RM15,000 if the court allows it, with the additional condition of not disturbing any witnesses.
The accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, in his mitigation, requested that the bail amount be reduced because he regretted his actions, was unemployed, and was still being supported by his father.
'This is my first mistake. I realise that I made a mistake. Previously, when I was detained for less than a month, I took that time to reflect on what I had done and repented.
'I am the eldest child and have the responsibility as an older brother to set a good example for my younger siblings. I request a reduction in the bail,' he said.
However, Judge Siti Aminah Ghazali set the bail amount at RM8,000 and August 20 as the sentencing date.
In a separate case in the same court, a 37-year-old lorry driver was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 20 strokes of the rotan after pleading guilty to raping his daughter last year and on May 17.
The court also ordered the defendant to undergo counselling and police supervision for two years after completing the sentence.
According to two charges, the lorry driver was accused of raping his biological child on November 10, 2024, and May 17, 2025, when the victim was 10 and 11 years old respectively, in a house in Meru, Klang.
The man was charged under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of not more than 30 years and not less than 10 strokes of the rotan, upon conviction.
The case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Jannah Aimi while the accused was not represented by a lawyer. — Bernama

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim said public fatigue over flawed prosecutions is reaching a tipping point. PETALING JAYA : Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has outlined several proposed reforms to keep the Attorney-General's Chambers accountable, after Najib Razak's discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in his SRC International Sdn Bhd money laundering case. Zaid said the AGC has operated without being held accountable for too long, necessitating reforms to be undertaken as Malaysians become disillusioned. 'Public fatigue over flawed prosecutions is reaching a tipping point. Malaysians are watching and they are angry,' the former Kota Bharu MP said in a post on X. Zaid called again for the separation of the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor to be expedited to ensure the public prosecutor's independence in upholding justice. He also suggested the establishment of a prosecution oversight commission, specifically to review decisions not to prosecute cases of public interest and to recommend referrals for judicial review. He proposed that a prosecution code of ethics be enacted to make it mandatory for prosecutors to always disclose all exculpatory evidence and provide written justifications for DNAAs, NFAs (no further action) and plea bargains. This is also aimed at excluding any political influence in charging any individual of an offence. Zaid called for the AGC to be required to table annual reports on the statistics of DNAAs and NFAs as well as prosecution outcomes in Parliament, and for a select committee to oversee prosecutorial conduct. He also suggested that senior prosecutors, like judges, be appointed to fixed terms to ensure that their tenures are protected from arbitrary removal. He called for whistleblower protection laws to be reviewed to allow for disclosures to be made even if involving classified information, as long as done in public interest and good faith. Zaid said Perikatan Nasional should champion these reforms if it wanted to gain public support, instead of simply touting slogans on reforms. 'A credible, ironclad promise to clean up the prosecution – with independent oversight, transparent rules, and professional integrity – would strike a powerful chord among the rakyat,' he said. This morning, Najib was granted a DNAA in his RM27 million SRC money laundering case after the High Court found that the prosecution was not ready to proceed with the trial. Justice K Muniandy said no witness testimony had been pursued since the case was brought against Najib in 2019, only a plethora of postponements, indicating that the prosecution was not ready to prosecute the case. Najib is currently serving his reduced six-year prison term for abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust involving RM42 million in SRC funds. In November, Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Irwan Serigar Abdullah were granted a DNAA in their International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) case.

Cabinet mulls crackdown on drug-laced vapes on social media
Police said electronic cigarettes and vapes have become increasingly linked to the abuse of new synthetic drugs. PETALING JAYA : Putrajaya is looking to crack down on the sale of banned substances on social media, including drug-laced vape devices, says government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil. At a press conference, Fahmi said the matter was brought up by domestic trade and cost of living minister Armizan Mohd Ali at today's Cabinet meeting. 'The Cabinet was informed today by Armizan regarding the sale of illegal products online, including items that can be classified as drugs or narcotics, and those misused with vape devices,' he said. Fahmi said he will meet Armizan and health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad soon to discuss the implementation of enforcement measures on the issue. 'After our meeting, we will present the outcome to the Cabinet and take action either on those selling the products or the platforms that allow such products to be sold,' said the communications minister. Previously, deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said electronic cigarettes and vapes have become increasingly linked to the abuse of new synthetic drugs. He said students as young as 13 years old have been caught using vapes containing substances mixed with drugs, and urged more states to ban the sale of vapes and e-cigarettes. Ayob also said fentanyl has also been detected in vape liquids, with effects 100 times stronger and more dangerous than morphine and 20 to 40 times stronger than heroin.

KLIA customs dept foils attempts to smuggle drugs worth RM2.65mil

(Custom pic) PETALING JAYA : Customs officers recently foiled attempts to smuggle a total of 30.14kg of drugs worth RM2.65 million through KLIA. KLIA customs director Zulkifli Muhammad said a man was arrested on April 17 for trying to smuggle out 14.65kg of cannabis buds worth almost RM1.44 million in his checked baggage on a flight to a European country. He said the man was subjected to a baggage inspection after his travel was blocked by the Border Control and Protection Agency. 'During the baggage scan, the man attempted to flee but was apprehended by customs personnel. 'The inspection found cannabis buds packed in vacuum-sealed plastic to avoid detection,' Bernama reported him as saying today. Zulkifli said on May 16, customs found 5.31kg of ecstasy worth almost RM900,000 smuggled in through a consignment at the cargo terminal in the KLIA free trade zone. He said the drugs, believed to have originated from a European country, were packaged and declared as laptop components. He said 10.18kg of methamphetamine, worth nearly RM300,000, was also intercepted on May 24. They were concealed in a consignment packed with clothing. He said investigations into the drug shipments are under way but face obstacles as the smugglers usually use fake company names and addresses. 'We have gone to the (premises) declared in the consignment information, but the companies either do not exist or have other addresses,' he said.
