Driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, large-cap tech stocks soared since the pandemic.
Even factoring in the recent correction in the Nasdaq Composite, the tech-heavy large-cap index is up 16% from its 2021 peak, and the Nasdaq-100, which features the 100 largest Nasdaq-listed companies, is up more than 25%.
However, small-cap stocks haven't been so lucky. The Russell 2000 small-cap index is now down 16% from its peak in 2021, and small-cap tech stocks have struggled, too, as they've largely missed out on the AI boom.
One such stock is Amplitude (NASDAQ: AMPL), a cloud software company that specializes in digital product analytics. Amplitude went public in September 2021 just as the pandemic stock market was peaking. After initially surging out of the gate as its sales were booming, Amplitude tumbled in 2022 along with the much of the rest of the software sector.
Sales growth slowed as many of its customers had overbought during the pandemic when digital tools were seen as a necessity and the business struggled to grow as customers reduced their spend.
However, three years since that crash, the company is now moving forward as those churns have finished, and it's made acquisitions and product launches that have built out its platform to where management has wanted it to be.
The stock currently trades at nearly $12 a share and has a market cap of $1.5 billion. That along with its growth potential make it an attractive stock to buy even with just $1,000.
Following the acquisition of Command AI last October, Amplitude finished building out its platform so that its customers no longer need to supplement it with point solutions.
Amplitude does everything its customers want from a product analytics platform, which they use to track how their e-commerce websites perform. Those products include guides and surveys, which allow companies to add bubbles to guide users along and survey them about their experience; session replay, which allows companies to see how users moved through their website; and heat maps, which indicate where users are spending the most time with their mouses.
Amplitude is introducing a marketing analytics tool next week, and will launch its AI agent in June, which will allow its customers to get recommendations directly from the AI agent rather than interpreting the data themselves. In an interview with The Motley Fool, CEO Spenser Skates said customers will "have hundreds of agents that are always looking over your data for you ... and finding trends and insights about how you can improve your product from that."
Amplitude's financial results have improved in recent quarters, but there is still room for its growth to accelerate. Reported revenue rose 10% to $80 million with annual recurring revenue (ARR) up 12% to $320 million. However, there are other metrics that point to stronger underlying growth in the business. The number of customers with ARR above $100,000 rose 18% to 617 as it continues to attract more enterprise-level customers and its remaining performance obligations grew 30% to $325.9 million as its customers sign longer contracts.
The company also announced a $50 million share buyback authorization to take advantage of volatility in the stock.
Amplitude currently trades at a price-to-sales ratio of 4, which is reasonable for a stock with its growth rate, but the company has the potential to be significantly larger, especially as it's emerging as the leader in product analytics, taking market share from Alphabet's Google Analytics and Adobe Analytics.
The launch of its AI agent next month could be a catalyst for long-term growth, and the business appears to be at an inflection point as the components for its platform have come together.

United States on Saturday conducted air strikes on three of Iran's nuclear sites, entering Israel's war against Tehran. The timing was unexpected. On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he was still considering U.S. involvement and would arrive at a decision "within the next two weeks." Financial and political analysts had largely taken that phrase as code word for inaction. "There is also skepticism that the 'two-week' timetable is a too familiar saying used by the President to delay making any major decision," wrote Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets. Indeed, Trump has commonly neglected to follow up after giving a "two week" timeframe on major actions, according to NBC News. And who can forget the TACO trade? It's an acronym that stands for "Trump Always Chickens Out" — which describes a pattern of the U.S. president threatening heavy tariffs, weighing down markets, but pausing or reducing their severity later on, helping stocks to rebound. "Trump has to bury the TACO before the TACO buries him ... he's been forced to stand down on many occasion, and that has cost him a lot of credibility," said David WOO, CEO of David Woo Unbound. And so Trump followed up on his threat, and ahead of the proposed two-week timeline. "There will be either peace, or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days," Trump said on Saturday evening. But given Trump's criticism of U.S. getting involved in wars under other presidents, does America bombing Iran add to his credibility, or erode it further? The U.S. strikes Iran U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday said the United States had attacked Iranian nuclear sites, pushing America into Israel's war with its longtime rival. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said Sunday that "Iran's nuclear ambitions have been obliterated." The decision to attack Iran engages the American military in active warfare in the Middle East — something Trump had vowed to avoid. Iran calls attacks 'outrageous'Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday said Tehran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty and people after the "outrageous" U.S. attacks on three of its major nuclear enrichment facilities. Iranian state-owned media, meanwhile, reported that Iran's parliament backed closing the Strait of Hormuz, citing a senior lawmaker. The U.S. on Sunday called on China to prevent Iran from doing so. Stock futures in U.S. retreatU.S. futures slid Sunday evening stateside as investors reacted to Washington's strikes on Iran. On Friday, U.S. markets mostly fell. The S&P 500 lost 0.22%, its third consecutive losing session, while the Nasdaq Composite retreated 0.51%. But the Dow Jones Industrial Average eked out a 0.08% gain. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index ticked up 0.13%, but ended the week 1.5% lower. Oil jumps but bitcoin slumpsOil prices jumped Sunday evening in the U.S., its first trading session after Saturday's strikes. U.S. crude oil rose $1.76, or 2.38%, to $75.60 per barrel, while global benchmark Brent was up $1.80, or 2.34%, to $78.81 per barrel. Meanwhile, bitcoin prices briefly dipped below the $99,000 mark Sunday, its lowest level in more than a month, before paring losses. It's now trading around $100,940, down 1.5%. [PRO] Eyes on inflation reading Where markets go this week will depend on whether the conflict in the Middle East escalates after the U.S.' involvement. Investors should also keep an eye on economic data. May's personal consumptions expenditure price index, the Federal Reserve's preferred gauge of inflation, comes out Friday, and will tell if tariffs are starting to heat up inflation. How regime change in Iran could affect global oil prices Senior Israeli officials said this week that their military campaign against Iran could trigger the fall of the regime, an event that would have enormous implications for the global oil market. There are no signs that the regime in Iran is on the verge of collapse, said Scott Modell, CEO of the consulting firm Rapidan Energy Grop. But further political destabilization in Iran "could lead to significantly higher oil prices sustained over extended periods," said Natasha Kaneva, head of global commodities research at JPMorgan, in a note to clients this week. There have been eight cases of regime change in major oil-producing countries since 1979, according to JPMorgan. Oil prices spiked 76% on average at their peak in the wake of these changes, before pulling back to stabilize at a price about 30% higher compared to pre-crisis levels, according to the bank.

NEW YORK (AP) — The price of oil rose and U.S. stock futures fell as global markets react to the U.S. strike against nuclear targets in Iran. The price of Brent crude oil, the international standard, rose 2.6% to $79 a barrel. U.S. crude rose 2.6% to $75.76 a barrel. On Saturday, U.S. forces attacked three Iranian nuclear and military sites, further increasing the stakes in the war between Israel and Iran. Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.3%, while Nasdaq futures fell 0.5%. Treasury yields were little changed. The modest moves indicate markets are taking the latest development in stride. The conflict, which began with an Israeli attack against Iran on June 13, has sent oil prices yo-yoing, which has in turn caused see-saw moves for the U.S. stock market, because of rising and ebbing fears that the war could disrupt the global flow of crude. Iran is a major producer of oil and also sits on the narrow Strait of Hormuz, through which much of the world's crude passes. An Iran retaliation that included closing off the waterway would be technically difficult to pull off but traders are afraid Iran could severely disrupt transit through it, sending insurance rates spiking and making shippers nervous to move without U.S. Navy escorts Some analysts think Iran is unlikely to close down the waterway because the country uses it to transport its own crude, mostly to China, and oil is a major source of revenue for the regime. 'It's a scorched earth possibility, a Sherman-burning-Atlanta move,' said Tom Kloza, chief market analyst at Turner Mason & Co. 'It's not probable.' Kloza thinks oil futures will ease back down after initial fears blow over. Ed Yardeni, a long-time analyst, agreed, writing in a report that Tehran leaders would likely hold back. 'They aren't crazy,' he wrote in a note to investors Sunday. 'The price of oil should fall and stock markets around the world should climb higher.' Other experts aren't so sure. Andy Lipow, a Houston analyst covering oil markets for 45 years, said countries are not always rational actors and that he wouldn't be surprised if Tehran lashed out for political or emotional reasons. 'If the Strait of Hormuz was completely shut down, oil prices would rise to $120 to $130 a barrel,' said Lipow, predicting that that would translate to about $4.50 a gallon at the pump and hurt consumers in other ways. 'It would mean higher prices for all those goods transported by truck, and it would be more difficult for the Fed to lower interest rates.'
