Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews has set his sights on the T20 World Cup next year, to be held in India and Sri Lanka, after calling time on his Test career.
Mathews' farewell Test match came to an end on Saturday at the Galle International Stadium—the same venue where he made his debut in the longest format in 2009—with host Sri Lanka settling for a draw with Bangladesh.
'I've still got six more months to go. I'll give it my best shot for the (2026) T20 World Cup.cI would love to sign off with a World Cup win. I'll just see how my body goes,' Mathews said in the post-match press conference.
'Ever since I announced my retirement, I just can't imagine the love that I have received up to now. It is so special because you feel as a player, once you give your 110% to the country, the amount of appreciation that you receive is unbelievable. It feels so special, very heartwarming and I'm so thankful to all of them,' he added.
Mathews ended his Test career as the third-highest run-getter in the format for Sri Lanka, with 8,214 runs in 119 matches at a healthy average of 44.40. He also picked 33 Test wickets with his medium pace.
Mathews was a part of the side which won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2014, beating India in the final, and is eyeing an encore.

‘No-ball, 3 missed chances stood between you and nau wickets': Sachin Tendulkar lauds Jasprit Bumrah; subtly points out India's fielding woes

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar praised Jasprit Bumrah for taking a fifer against England at Leeds on Sunday while also subtly pointing out India's missed chances on the field. While Bumrah's fifer helped India bowl out England for 465, the score might have been even less had India taken all their catching chances on the field. Off Bumrah's bowling alone, India dropped 4 catches, three by Yashasvi Jaiswal and one by Ravindra Jadeja with Harry Brook getting reprieve twice, once on 46 and then on 82. The England batter would fail to reach three figures, getting caught by Shardul Thakur off Prasidh Krishna on 99, but he had already done enough damage to India by the time he walked back. 'Congratulations Bumrah! A no-ball and 3 missed chances stood between you and 𝙣𝙖𝙪 wickets,' Tendulkar posted on X. Congratulations Bumrah!A no-ball and 3 missed chances stood between you and 𝙣𝙖𝙪 wickets. 🤪 — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) June 22, 2025 By taking the five-fer at Leeds, Bumrah drew level with the legendary Kapil Dev to become the Indian players with the joint-most five wicket hauls in away Tests. Bumrah has taken 12 fifers, the same as Dev but did it in 34 Test matches as compared to 66 matches by the former India World Cup winning captain. They are followed by Ishant Sharma who has taken 9 fifers in 63 matches, Zaheer Khan who has 8 in 54 matches and Irafan Pathan who has 7 in 15 matches. Bumrah accounted for the wickets of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue as India bundled out England for 465, still maintaining a lead of 6 runs. Before Bumrah castled Josh Tongue to end England innings, Chris Woakes (38 off 55) punished a predictable Indian pace attack to take his team close to India's 471. England's tail virtually cancelled out the Indian first innings with the match now hinged on third and fourth innings respectively. Hosts continued to find the boundaries at will as they collected 138 runs in 23.4 overs in the afternoon session with the loss of five wickets. Prasidh removed Jamie Smith (40 off 52) and Brook with the short ball but leaked too many runs at the same time with his one dimensional tactic, conceding 128 runs in 20 overs.

Indians with most 5-wicket hauls in away Tests: Jasprit Bumrah draws level with Kapil Dev with fifer vs England at Leeds

India's premier pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah showed his class yet again when he took a 5-wicket haul against England in the opening Test at Leeds on Sunday. By taking the five-fer, Bumrah also drew level with the legendary Kapil Dev to become the Indian players with the joint-most five wicket hauls in away Tests. Resuming on 209-3 in reply to India's 471 all out, England were dealt an early blow when overnight centurion Ollie Pope perished for 106 while Harry Brook fell in the second session when attempting to bring up his century with a six. Brook had got his eye in and steadied the ship with some crisp hitting, smashing 11 boundaries as he made India pay for dropped catches by bringing up his 12th test half-century. He was given a third lifeline when he slashed at a wide ball to Yashasvi Jaiswal at fourth slip but the Indian opener fluffed the chance — his third dropped catch and India's fifth in the innings. The Yorkshire-born batter looked set for a big score before his moment of heartbreak came when he attempted to reach three figures with a flourish, lofting Prasidh Krishna over fine leg only to find Shardul Thakur stationed at the boundary rope. A dejected Brook threw his head back and put his hand up to his face before he trudged back to the pavilion as the Headingley crowd overcame their disappointment to give him a standing ovation. Krishna had also dismissed Pope with a shorter delivery when he nicked it to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps, with the batter adding only six runs to his overnight score.

IND vs ENG: 'Call it the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy': Sunil Gavaskar questions naming order of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

Image credit: England Cricket NEW DELHI: Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed strong reservations over the naming of the ongoing five-match Test series between India and England as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Gavaskar argued that Sachin Tendulkar 's name should appear before James Anderson's, citing Tendulkar's seniority and vastly superior achievements in international cricket. Writing in his column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar dismissed the reasoning that names were ordered alphabetically and took particular aim at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for their decision. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'The ECB is fully entitled to call the series by any name they choose but for most, if not all, Indian cricket lovers it is jarring to know that Anderson's name comes first. Not only is Sachin Tendulkar along with Kapil Dev the greatest Indian cricketer, but also senior to Anderson by more than a dozen years. He is numero uno as far as runs and centuries are concerned in Test cricket but also at the one-day level too he has more runs than anybody else,' Gavaskar wrote. The former India captain continued by underlining the disparity in accomplishments between the two cricketing icons. 'Anderson is third in the list of wicket takers in Test cricket and his record is nowhere as good as Tendulkar in one-day cricket. Tendulkar is also part of a World Cup winning team which Anderson has not been. Jimmy Anderson was a terrific bowler but mainly in English conditions and his record away is nowhere near as good as Tendulkar's is,' he added. Gavaskar also called upon Indian fans and the media to refer to the series as the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, flipping the current order to reflect what he believes is the more appropriate recognition. Sitanshu Kotak press conference: Big revelation on Shubman Gill In the same column, Gavaskar offered suggestions regarding the Pataudi Medal of Excellence, which is currently awarded to the captain of the series-winning team. He questioned the logic behind that structure. 'Why the captain and what if the series is drawn? That's why it would have been better to have had a Pataudi medal for the man of the match for every Test, culminating in the Pataudi Trophy for the player of the series. This way, the Pataudis will be remembered after every Test match played as well as after the series is finished in England,' Gavaskar remarked.
