UDF's tit-for-tat response to pro-LDF writers in Nilambur
A group of writers and artistes from across the State on Tuesday appealed to vote for United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shoukath in the Nilambur Assembly byelection on Thursday.
It turned out to be the UDF's tit-for-tat for the clarion call made by a group of writers in support of Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj the other day.
The writers and cultural leaders who rallied for Mr. Shoukath were K.G. Sankara Pillai, Kalpatta Narayanan, J. Devika, B. Rajeevan, U.K. Kumaran, C.V. Balakrishnan, R.P. Azad, Joy Mathew, Sajeevan Anthikkad, Sudha Menon, Joseph C. Mathew, Rosy Thampi, K. Aravindakshan, K. Gopinathan, K. Girish Kumar, Pratapan Thayattu, Babu Kuzhimattam, J.S. Adoor, Pramod Puzhankara, Damodar Prasad, V.S. Anil Kumar, Kusumam Joseph, P.V. Krishnan Nair, M.P. Surendran, C.J. George, Vinod Chandran, K.N. Sunandan, I. Gopinath, Augustine Kuttanellur, Arun Karippalil, V.S. Gireeshan and Janaky Sreedharan.
'If I had my franchise in Nilambur, I would have voted for the Congress led by Rahul Gandhi, who is leading a fighting against fascism at the national level,' said Mr. Kalpatta Narayanan.
He was speaking after taking part in a conclave of learners who benefitted from educational projects like Jyotirgamaya, Sameeksha, Sadgamaya and Oppathinoppam implemented by Mr. Shoukath when he was chairperson of Nilambur municipality.
He said he differed with the other group of writers who called for support to Mr. Swaraj. 'Writers can appear anywhere. He is a free entity. There is no politics in that,' he said.
Mr. Narayanan added that writers should not turn a blind eye on the struggles of ASHAs and the contempt shown by those in power towards them, the land struggle being carried out by the Adivasis in Nilambur.
He said Mr. Shoukath had triggered a revolution of letters in Nilambur when he had headed the Nilambur civic body.
Many participants at the conclave shared their nostalgic memories. They showered Mr. Shoukath with their appreciation and gratitude.
KPCC working president P.C. Vishnunath presided over the function. Former MP Ramya Haridas, Pazhakulam Madhu, and P. Harigovindan spoke.

Poll claims fly as UDF, LDF battle it out
Kozhikode: A day after the closely-watched and politically-significant Nilambur bypoll, UDF and LDF camps pored over internal booth-level estimates collected from the field and concluded that the outcome would be a favourable one. While UDF reviewed its estimates and claimed that the front would secure a huge majority, LDF came out with a cautious estimate expecting a narrow victory margin. UDF claimed it would win by a big margin of around 10,000 votes. It expects a lead of over 4,000 votes in Vazhikkadavu, nearly the same margin in Moothedam, 1,500 votes in Edakkara and 1,000 votes each in Nilambur municipality and Pothukallu. UDF also expects small leads in Chungathara and Karulayi. On the other hand, LDF's internal feedback showed a tighter contest, projecting a narrow win margin of around 1,600 votes. Left is counting on leads in Amarambalam, Pothukallu, Nilambur municipality and Karulayi to offset UDF's expected lead of 1,500 votes in Vazhikkadavu and other narrow leads in Moothedam and Edakkara, where UDF has historically held a strong political base. Early projections from both camps estimated his vote share at 10,000 votes, but LDF sources now believe Anvar could secure well beyond that number, mainly by drawing support from UDF voters. The BJP is expected to get around 7,000 votes, while SDPI is likely to garner around 2,500 votes. For LDF and UDF, the stakes are high. Winning this bypoll will boost morale and set the tone for the upcoming local body elections and the 2026 assembly polls. Kerala's internal revenue generation tipped to cross ₹1 lakh crore in 2025-26, says Finance Minister
Kerala's own revenue is projected to cross the ₹ 1 lakh crore-mark in 2025-26, signalling that State finances will continue in recovery mode despite severe challenges on the fiscal front, Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal has said. Mr. Balagopal said the Finance department expected internal revenue generation, from both own tax and non-tax sources, to touch ₹1.05 lakh crore in the current fiscal. The estimated growth, he said, was the outcome of improved efficiency in tax collection enabled by a comprehensive overhaul of the Taxes department in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. Under the present Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front government, the State's own tax revenues (SOTR) had steadily improved from ₹47,661 crore in 2020-21 to ₹76,656 crore in 2024-25. Non-tax revenues grew from ₹7,327 crore to ₹16,568 crore during the same period. The government, Mr. Balagopal said, had succeeded in pulling up the State from a Central policies-induced 'nosedive' to a position where it was equipped for 'take-off' to the next phase. 'We have achieved this in a situation where Kerala was deprived of about ₹50,000 crore annually due to the shrinkage of borrowing space and discontinuation of the revenue deficit grant and GST compensation,' he said. Mr. Balagopal said there was continued scope for finetuning tax collection. On the Integrated GST (IGST) front, systemic issues in the mechanism of its settlement with all States had deprived Kerala of ₹956.16 crore. Kerala had taken up the matter with the Centre, Mr. Balagopal said. Mr. Balagopal said the State expected to allocate ₹600 crore this year towards the Guarantee Redemption Fund (GDR). The GDR was meant to cover government guarantees offered for loans availed by public sector entities and cooperatives. According to Kerala, the Centre had reduced the State's borrowing limit by a further ₹3,300 this year citing the GDR as a requirement. Mr. Balagopal also swept aside reports that the State's debt would touch ₹6 lakh crore this year-end. It would increase to about ₹4.7 lakh crore, but the State had been able to reverse the previous trend where debt doubled every five years. As part of the drive against tax evasion, the State GST department was planning action against traders/businesses who evaded taxation by deploying street vendors to sell their products, the Minister said. 'Such practices take unfair advantage of the benefits enjoyed by genuine street vendors,' he said. In May, the SGST department had busted an organised racket engaged in the manufacture and sale of spurious diesel, he said.
