Over 200 bus crashes in Malaysia since 2023, say police, reasons given – no rest, drugs and faulty vehicles
PETALING JAYA, June 24 — A total of 203 bus-related accidents were reportedly recorded in Malaysia over a 29-month period from January 2023 to May this year, resulting in 39 deaths, 68 serious injuries, and 197 minor injuries.
According to a report in Utusan Malaysia, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said driver behaviour and vehicle condition were among the main causes of the crashes.
'Among them, drivers become fatigued from long hours without rest, lose focus, or exceed speed limits — especially on steep or slippery roads,' he was quoted as saying.
He added that inexperience, poor bus handling skills, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs also contributed to the incidents.
Of the total accidents, 104 occurred in 2023, 61 so far in 2024, and 38 in the first five months of this year.
Mechanical issues such as sudden brake or steering failure, worn-out tyres, or non-functioning lights were also identified as causes.
'Some accidents happened due to pressure from operators chasing tight schedules, with some buses not undergoing proper checks before departure,' Mohd Yusri said.
He also cited poor road conditions, bad weather, overcrowded buses, and weak company oversight as contributing factors.

KUALA LUMPUR : Najib Razak still has a shot at being freed even if he fails to obtain a judicial review on a royal addendum that purportedly allows him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest. The former prime minister's lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, said Najib could still apply for parole in September or October. 'And the chances of him obtaining a parole is high considering that his jail term has been reduced to six years and he will receive an automatic remission after two years,' Shafee said. 'Najib has already served three years, so it's just another year left (before he is eligible for an automatic remission). He can be paroled,' he said. Najib is currently serving a six-year jail sentence on charges of abuse of power and corruption in the SRC International case. A Federal Court hearing has been set for July 1-2 on an appeal against a Court of Appeal decision allowing Najib to initiate a judicial review related to the addendum. The Court of Appeal had ordered the High Court to hear Najib's claim of the existence of a royal addendum. Separately, Shafee said that Najib has been a model prisoner. He also said Najib had obtained a doctorate while in prison and therefore saw no reason why he should be denied parole. 'His PhD is about developing the country. Many came to engage him. In many ways he is a model prisoner,' Shafee said.

Umno leader calls for probe into AGC's weaknesses over Najib decision
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said the decision to discharge Najib Razak was an embarrassment to the Attorney-General's Chambers. PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has called for the Attorney-General's Chambers' shortcomings to be investigated, following the granting of a conditional discharge to Najib Razak over charges of money laundering. Puad said the High Court's decision yesterday was an embarrassment to the AGC, coming after Najib's trial was postponed for six years. He said the case was overseen by three attorneys-general, and asked: 'Where is the AGC's credibility?' He also questioned why the AGC had gone ahead with pressing charges against Najib if the prosecution was not prepared. However, he dismissed a call by former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli for the prosecution to confirm that charges would be refiled against Najib as soon as possible. 'The issue here isn't about refiling charges, but the reasons the discharge was granted,' Puad said. 'The (AGC's) weaknesses should be looked into.' Earlier this evening, Pejuang called for a special committee to be set up to review high-profile cases, especially those involving politicians facing criminal charges who are granted a conditional discharge. The party's information chief, Rafique Rashid Ali, said the panel should determine if there are any questionable elements affecting the integrity of the high-profile cases. The High Court, granting Najib a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on Friday, said there had been a plethora of postponements since the case was brought against Najib in 2019, indicating that the prosecution was not ready. The AGC later stated that the need to secure documents required as evidence left it with no other option but to agree to the discharge.

Pay bus drivers minimum wage or face action, ministry tells firms
The human resources ministry said the labour department will tighten enforcement against parties that violate the laws on wages, including bus companies. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The human resources ministry says it will not hesitate to act against companies that flout national wage laws, in response to a report on the low basic salaries paid to bus drivers. Harian Metro had reported that some express and tour bus drivers claimed they receive basic salaries as low as RM700, with some saying they are not paid base salaries at all. In a statement today, the ministry said it takes such reports seriously, and that the labour department will tighten enforcement against parties violating the laws on wages. It reiterated that all companies must pay their employees a minimum of RM1,700 regardless of salary structure, according to the Minimum Wages Order 2024. It said companies that flout the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 are punishable under Section 43 of the Act, with first-time offenders liable to a fine not exceeding RM10,000 for each employee, and repeat offenders a maximum of RM20,000 or up to five years' prison sentence. In the report, those who claimed they are not paid basic salaries said they have to rely on travel allowances and overtime work to make ends meet. 'In my company, there is no base salary. I earn RM50 for a single trip from Manjung (Perak) to Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (Kuala Lumpur). I can make RM100 a day from a round trip. 'If I take four days off in a month, I earn around RM2,600. If I don't take any day off, I can earn RM3,000,' said a 29-year-old express bus driver who only wanted to be known as Mamat. Another driver, who asked to be identified as Mior, said he had previously taken only three days off in a month, relying on payment depending on the distance of his trips. Malaysian Bumiputera Bus Operators Association chairman Zainal Abidin Mehat also said some bus companies allow their drivers to work up to 28 days a month because of a shortage of manpower. The ministry also said it would carry out a review of 28 labour-related laws through a task force headed by deputy secretary-general (policy and international) Shaharin Umar to ensure that there are no exploitable legal loopholes. This review is scheduled for completion in May next year.
