If you think all orchestras sound alike, listen to this recording

These are gloomy days, so here's a burst of melody and colour to cheer you up. Back in the LP era it wasn't unusual for classical recordings to be put together like a concert that you might actually want to hear: a sequence of works by different but complementary composers, offering the possibility of a happy discovery. Come for the Strauss, stay for the Reznicek – that sort of thing.
This lively new disc from the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic adopts the same principle. The unifying theme is early-20th-century eastern European nationalism – the folksong-collecting variety, not the Archduke-assassinating kind. But it's the opposite of monotonous. The Bartok is brusque and peppery alongside Kodaly's cheerful nostalgia, while Enescu's folk-fiddles flash and dart in the sunlight (the opening theme of his Romanian Rhapsody is based on a drinking song: what's not to like?). The centrepiece is the Frescoes of Piero della Francesca: a luscious, colour-saturated triptych of tone poems that might be the finest symphony Martinu never wrote.
Anyway, the Turkish players go at this music with a will – wide-eyed, occasionally splashy, but sensitive to each shift of mood and texture (and in this repertoire, there are a lot). It's marvellously translucent. Harps ripple within chords, the strings are springy and supple and the bassoons have soil under their fingernails – in all, a suitably tangy corrective to the jaded notion that all orchestras now sound alike. The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic recently toured the UK, but I'm embarrassed to say that I'd never heard of their Italian chief conductor Carlo Tenan. If this recording is typical, he knows his stuff.

Amouranth returns to Twitch after deleting post showing money earned at Kick
Two years after signing a deal with Kick, Amouranth has revealed she's making a grand return to Twitch. Kaitlyn Siragusa, aka Amouranth, is known for her controversial hot tub and ASMR livestreams, which have led to at least eight Twitch bans in the past. While her popularity began on Twitch, two years ago the streamer signed a non-exclusive deal with rival streaming platform Kick. The deal's exact worth is still unknown, but Amouranth publicly said it 'doubled my income across the board'. Over the past couple of years, Amouranth has still occasionally streamed on other platforms outside of Kick, including Twitch, but it appears she's now making a return on a more regular basis. On Thursday, June 19, Amouranth posted a video on X showing the streamer outside a 7-Eleven store, where she drives off in a vehicle which switches from green to purple. The video concludes with the message,'The Return', alongside a link to her Twitch channel. The original post for this video was captioned, '$38 million later…' – presumably the amount she earned from Kick over the past two years. However, this post has since been deleted and replaced with an updated version on Friday, June 20 which simply reads 'Today'. It's unclear whether this new version was simply to re-promote her return, or if she got a telling off from Kick for revealing her income (or just became self-conscious about it), but the livestream is set to begin on Friday. More Trending The exact parameters around Amouranth's return to Twitch are also unknown. If it is a new deal, it will likely be non-exclusive, as the streamer has a huge presence on other platforms like OnlyFans. It's also unclear if she'll abandon Kick entirely, but the exact details might emerge during her 'return' stream later today. Despite being primarily a Kick streamer for two years, Amouranth still has over 6.2 million followers on Twitch. In comparison, she has 265,900 Kick followers. A number of other big streamers have signed deals with Kick over the past few years, as the platform looks to boost its viewership, including Félix Lengyel, aka xQc, Adin Ross, and Ice Poseidon. Whether you want to gaze out toward The Shard, indulge in some delicious food, or have a boogie while the DJ plays – we think we've got something for everyone. So, if you're in need of some inspiration for your next night out, Metro has 10 picks of the city's best rooftop venues… When you're 11 floors up at this rooftop bar with views of the Gherkin and St Pauls, there are few views that rival it. The award-winning Florattica is known for its iconic flower ceiling, al fresco dining and a DJ that brings the coolest vibes – it's a spot you don't want to miss. Be sure to try some of its experimental cocktails, and line your stomach with a selection of small plates and fresh pasta. There are two bars to choose from – Sky Pod and City Garden – where you can sip your cocktail or G&T while watching the sunset, as well as three restaurants within the building. It's a must-visit, although be aware it doesn't come cheap – cocktails start at around £15, while the cheapest glass of wine will set you back a tenner. As well as cocktails you can also make the most of street food vendors serving up fried chicken, burgers and Japanese dishes (at time of writing: the menu changes from time to time). There's also a bottomless brunch on Sundays, and a DJ at weekends spinning timeless classics. You can book in advance if visiting in a group but there's space for walk-ins too. Location: 5 Kingdom St, London W2 6PY Tube: Paddington (Bakerloo, Hammersmith and City, Circle, District and Elizabeth Lines) Having opened in 2023, this rooftop gem has already made an impression, becoming very popular on TikTok. Offering stunning vistas of the iconic London skyline and lounge tables to get comfy on, it's the perfect place to unwind. Offering a unique blend of Japanese and Mexican food including sushi andtacos, you can indulge in delicious light but tasty bites. There's also Sunday sessions from 1pm to 9pm which offer DJ sets as you watch the sun go down. Indulge in live music, good wine and very funky cocktails – but it is on the pricier side. Perched on top of the Double Tree by Hilton it's elegant and chic, but it gets very busy so you'll probably want to book in advance. Location: Savage Garden, 7, Pepys Street, EC3N 4AF Tube: Tower Hill (Circle and District lines) Now hear us out on this one because it's atop the John Lewis flagship store, but it's a true find. Offering a stunning rooftop escape with breathtaking city views, private greenhouses, and an elegant open-air terrace, it's great for a laid back afternoon with friends. The menu features fruit-forward brambles; Kumquat Old Fashioned; and a Calamansi Margarita with a spiced ancho chili rim. As the sun sets, live DJ sets on Friday and Saturday nights set the mood, making 1864 the ultimate spot for an elevated rooftop experience in the heart of London. Location: Sixth floor, 300 Oxford St, London W1C 1DX Tube: Oxford Circus and Bond Street (Bakerloo, Central, and Victoria lines and Jubilee and Elizabeth lines) Located on the 10th floor of the ME London hotel, Radio Rooftop not only offers a superb cocktail list, but also a 360-degree views that shows off the capital's skyline and the River Thames.
