England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton hopes to ‘live up to the legacy' of Mary Earps

England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton hopes to 'live up to the legacy' of the recently-retired Mary Earps but insisted she felt no extra pressure entering the European Championship as the defending champions' undisputed number one.
Earps was instrumental in inspiring the Lionesses to their first major trophy on home turf in 2022, but had been slipping in boss Sarina Wiegman's favour behind 24-year-old Chelsea shot-stopper Hampton before announcing she would be stepping away from international football last month.
Hampton felt her predecessor did not deserve the 'scrutiny' she experienced in the aftermath, but conceded she was 'not expecting' a reply to a congratulatory text she sent Earps, 32, after she made her shock decision public.

'We're going to miss her as a person here,' Hampton said. 'She's a big personality in this team and she glued us all together at times when we needed (her) to.
'So, I think it's been difficult for everyone to come to terms with what her decision is, but we have to respect that. And now I've got to just go and live up to her legacy. I'll give it my best shot for sure.'
In April, Wiegman confirmed the younger keeper was 'a little bit ahead' of two-time FIFA Best winner Earps.
'First of all we have to obviously respect what (Earps') decision is,' said Hampton.
'I think there's been quite a bit of scrutiny that she probably doesn't deserve with everything that she's achieved in the game and obviously (she's) put women's goalkeeping on the map for the younger generation, aspiring to now be a goalkeeper.
'It was never really a thing and Mary's changed that. There's so many more young boys and girls taking part in goalkeeping, which was never the case when I was growing up.
'I think I've done everything I need to do. I've sent her a text and I congratulated her on a very successful international career and I think that's all I really can do.
'I don't think there's anything else and I'm not expecting anything back. She's been an unbelievable player.'
Hampton has steadily risen up the ranks for both club and country since joining Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2023.
And ahead of England's Euros defence – which begins against France on July 5, she added: 'I think of it as just playing another game of football.
'There's not really much pressure that you can put on yourself. We're here as a big team.
Mary Earps has today announced her decision to retire from international football with immediate effect.
The decision marks the end of a memorable eight-year international career. ❤️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

'You'll get through the games as a big team, whether that was me starting or me on the sidelines supporting – you knew what your role was going to be for the whole of the summer.
'Just getting that bit of clarity already helps you prepare for whatever your role is. My role is different this time around compared to the last tournaments, but it's not going to change my mindset.
'I'm there to enjoy myself, do the nation proud with all the girls and get memories. I remember all the memories from the last World Cup and Euros and I cherish every single one of them, I just want to keep repeating that.'

London City Lionesses announce high-profile signing of Danielle van de Donk

33-year-old midfielder, Danielle van de Donk, joined London City Lionesses on a free transfer following the expiry of her contract at French giants Lyon, now rebranded OL Lyonnes. Both OL Lyonnes and London City are part of Michele Kang's growing portfolio in women's football with the American investor continuing to make waves across Europe. This marks a significant first signing for the Lionesses ahead of their inaugural WSL campaign after they clinched the Championship title in May. The club operates independently of any men's team - setting it apart in a league dominated by affiliated giants like Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. Van de Donk brings with her a wealth of experience and a winning streak. She lifted the WSL trophy with Arsenal in 2019 and played a central role in the Netherlands' European Championship victory in 2017, later helping the team reach the 2019 World Cup final. Speaking after the announcement, van de Donk said: 'I feel really good about this decision. It's such a nice environment to be in, the club really appeals to me, it reminds me of a little family, and I want to be a part of it. The project that London City have, it's different but in a good way. London City have to battle for everything and that's my style.' The veteran midfielder has penned a two year deal and will be central to a team aiming to challenge the established order in English women's football. Elsewhere in the women's game the FA has confirmed plans to expand the WSL to 14 teams starting from the 2026-27 season, a move that signals continued growth and investment in the top tier. In the third tier Burnley have appointed two time WSL winning manager Matt Beard as their new head coach, making headlines as they gear up for a transition to full time professionalism. The former Liverpool manager was in advanced discussions with Burnley and told the club's media channels: 'I'm so impressed with everybody I've met at the club and the conversations I've had, and I'm looking forward to getting started.' Beard, who was previously in charge at Chelsea and West Ham, arrives with the club preparing to become a full-time women's football operation from next season.

She recently made herself unavailable for this summer's Euro 2025, saying she was unable to give 100 per cent mentally or physically. Away from the field, Bright has fallen "hook, line, and sinker" for her new personal trainer boyfriend. The Sun exclusively revealed this week Millie's new man was a married dad of seven who has already moved into her home. Dave Zetolofsky, 39, is a martial arts enthusiast and former pro kickboxer. And Bright appeared to be smitten as she soaked up some rays on Thursday afternoon. Millie uploaded a series of snaps for her 450,000 Instagram fans, posing in the sunshine before hitting up a restaurant for dinner. Lionesses centre-back Millie wrote: "Appreciating the little things." Millie met Dave after she began training at the 21st Century Combat gym in Redhill, Surrey. A source told The Sun: "Millie and Dave's relationship is no secret. Bright started her career at Doncaster Belles after coming through Sheffield United's youth setup. She was snapped up by Chelsea prior to the 2015 season and has gone on to become one of their greatest ever players. Bright has earned 88 caps for the Lionesses, scoring six goals. The 31-year-old is currently the club captain and is contracted with the Blues until 2026. Bright has told friends her new romance has nothing to do with her withdrawal from international duty this summer. There is also no suggestion that the pair have cheated on their former partners.

England's Hannah Hampton opens up on proving doubters wrong before Euros and hails Mary Earps' legacy

HANNAH HAMPTON was once told by doctors she could never pursue a football career due to eyesight depth perception concerns. But the Chelsea goalkeeper, who has since proved them wrong, is set to play in a Euros for England next month. 4 4 The Birmingham-born Lioness, 24, was 11 when medics told her that football as a profession was something she should not consider. The Chelsea star has since overcome those hurdles to emerge as England's number one. And her team targeting Euros glory in Switzerland this July. Hampton said: "I've always gone through life trying to prove people wrong. "I was told from a young age that I couldn't play football, that it wouldn't be a profession I could pursue "The doctors told my parents that (and yet) I'm here right now." Hampton was part of an England squad head coach Sarina Wiegman guided to a Euros tournament triumph on these shores in 2022. The shot stopper was an unused substitute during the contest with her former team-mate Mary Earps then England's number one. Since then the keeper, whose football journey began at five as a striker in Villarreal's academy, has enjoyed an impressive rise. A summer 2023 Chelsea move from Aston Villa was followed by four domestic trophy wins, two of them WSL titles. Last term Hampton started in all 22 of the Blues' top-flight matches as they went unbeaten in the WSL. And she won the league's Golden Boot after keeping clean sheets in 13 of those games. Hampton's England rise this past season included shutting out world champions Spain in a Nations League win in February. But her progress has not been without its challenging moments. Three months after their 2022 Euros win, she found herself in the media spotlight after being dropped from England's squad. This followed speculation concerning her attitude. Reflecting on this Hampton adds: "You can't let all the media scrutiny win. "If you do that it just adds fuel to the fire and I wasn't willing to accept that. "I wanted to show who I am as a person and show that wasn't always true. "So I just thought: 'just dig in.' I did that and I'm sat here right now. "I think I can say that I've proved people wrong." On July 5 Hampton will play in a Euros match for the first time when England face France in a Group D opener in the Swiss city of Zurich. The Lionesses will also take on 2017 champs Holland and debutants Wales for a place on the tournament's knockout stage Unlike their last Euros run England will be without the services of Earps. Last month the Paris Saint-Germain keeper left Lionesses followers stunned by retiring from the international game. Her announcement followed Hampton's emergence as England's first-team regular. This year the Chelsea player started in five of the Lionesses' last six Nations League games. The Blues star, who reckons Earps decision should be respected, vowed to live up to her legacy. Hampton said: "It's been difficult for everyone to come to terms with but we have to respect that. "There's been quite a bit of scrutiny she doesn't deserve with everything that she's achieved in the game. "Mary put women's goalkeeping on the map for the younger generation. "Now l've got to live up to her legacy. I'll give it my best shot for sure." On July 5 Hampton will play in the Women's Euros for the first time when England face France in a Group D clash in Zurich. Clashes with 2017 champions the Netherlands and contest debutants Wales will follow on July 9 and 13 in Switzerland's largest city. Wiegman's squad includes seven players competing in their first major tournament just as Hampton did three years ago. They include strikers Aggie Beever-Jones, 22, and Michelle Agyemang, 19, playmaker Jess Park and defender Maya Le Tissier, both 23, and goalkeeper Khiara Keating. Hampton said: "People don't know what to expect from some of the younger players coming through. "Only we know what to expect, what their capabilities are. It's quite exciting. 4 "They've got the adrenaline to get them through and they don't know what to expect of a major tournament yet. "That was my case when I went to the Euros last time around." 'That adds to you getting through it for sure.
