England's Hannah Hampton opens up on proving doubters wrong before Euros and hails Mary Earps' legacy
HANNAH HAMPTON was once told by doctors she could never pursue a football career due to eyesight depth perception concerns.
But the Chelsea goalkeeper, who has since proved them wrong, is set to play in a Euros for England next month.

The Birmingham-born Lioness, 24, was 11 when medics told her that football as a profession was something she should not consider.
The Chelsea star has since overcome those hurdles to emerge as England's number one.
And her team targeting Euros glory in Switzerland this July.
Hampton said: "I've always gone through life trying to prove people wrong.
"I was told from a young age that I couldn't play football, that it wouldn't be a profession I could pursue
"The doctors told my parents that (and yet) I'm here right now."
Hampton was part of an England squad head coach Sarina Wiegman guided to a Euros tournament triumph on these shores in 2022.
The shot stopper was an unused substitute during the contest with her former team-mate Mary Earps then England's number one.
Since then the keeper, whose football journey began at five as a striker in Villarreal's academy, has enjoyed an impressive rise.
A summer 2023 Chelsea move from Aston Villa was followed by four domestic trophy wins, two of them WSL titles.
Last term Hampton started in all 22 of the Blues' top-flight matches as they went unbeaten in the WSL.
And she won the league's Golden Boot after keeping clean sheets in 13 of those games.
Hampton's England rise this past season included shutting out world champions Spain in a Nations League win in February.
But her progress has not been without its challenging moments.
Three months after their 2022 Euros win, she found herself in the media spotlight after being dropped from England's squad.
This followed speculation concerning her attitude.
Reflecting on this Hampton adds: "You can't let all the media scrutiny win.
"If you do that it just adds fuel to the fire and I wasn't willing to accept that.
"I wanted to show who I am as a person and show that wasn't always true.
"So I just thought: 'just dig in.' I did that and I'm sat here right now.
"I think I can say that I've proved people wrong."
On July 5 Hampton will play in a Euros match for the first time when England face France in a Group D opener in the Swiss city of Zurich.
The Lionesses will also take on 2017 champs Holland and debutants Wales for a place on the tournament's knockout stage
Unlike their last Euros run England will be without the services of Earps.
Last month the Paris Saint-Germain keeper left Lionesses followers stunned by retiring from the international game.
Her announcement followed Hampton's emergence as England's first-team regular.
This year the Chelsea player started in five of the Lionesses' last six Nations League games.
The Blues star, who reckons Earps decision should be respected, vowed to live up to her legacy.
Hampton said: "It's been difficult for everyone to come to terms with but we have to respect that.
"There's been quite a bit of scrutiny she doesn't deserve with everything that she's achieved in the game.
"Mary put women's goalkeeping on the map for the younger generation.
"Now l've got to live up to her legacy. I'll give it my best shot for sure."
On July 5 Hampton will play in the Women's Euros for the first time when England face France in a Group D clash in Zurich.
Clashes with 2017 champions the Netherlands and contest debutants Wales will follow on July 9 and 13 in Switzerland's largest city.
Wiegman's squad includes seven players competing in their first major tournament just as Hampton did three years ago.
They include strikers Aggie Beever-Jones, 22, and Michelle Agyemang, 19, playmaker Jess Park and defender Maya Le Tissier, both 23, and goalkeeper Khiara Keating.
Hampton said: "People don't know what to expect from some of the younger players coming through.
"Only we know what to expect, what their capabilities are. It's quite exciting.

"They've got the adrenaline to get them through and they don't know what to expect of a major tournament yet.
"That was my case when I went to the Euros last time around."
'That adds to you getting through it for sure.

Nicolas Jackson sent off as Chelsea implode against Flamengo
The Blues conceded twice and saw Jackson dismissed for a horror tackle in the space of just six minutes after the break. This Mengão comeback. 😮💨#FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 20, 2025 Their woes were compounded when Wallace Yan wrapped up the scoring late on, adding to earlier goals from fellow substitute Bruno Henrique and veteran Danilo. The result – played out in front of a crowd of 54,019 at Lincoln Financial Field – left Chelsea with a win and a loss from their two outings in Group D having earlier looked set to take a giant stride towards the last 16. It made for a disappointing full debut for new striker Liam Delap, who had been brought into the side for Jackson, but a notable scalp for Flamengo manager Filipe Luis, formerly of the London club. The game got off to lively and feisty start yet while the Brazilians looked more at ease in the heat – 27C at kick-off – they struggled to carve out clear-cut openings. Former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho did fire over in the early stages but Robert Sanchez was not troubled in goal. Despite a lack of possession and a subdued performance from Cole Palmer out wide, Chelsea offered a threat on the counter-attack. Delap went close to opening the scoring when he burst clear and forced Agustin Rossi to palm over. Chelsea grabbed the lead when Neto benefited from a fortunate ricochet after being struck by an attempted clearance from Wesley. The Portuguese broke clear from halfway and calmly tucked away his second goal of the tournament from the edge of the box. Neto almost created another for Delap but his pull-back was cut out by Wesley and Chelsea had a penalty appeal rejected after Enzo Fernandez went down in the area. Levi Colwill headed clear off the line after a Flamengo free-kick was slung into the area but it was not until the second period the Brazilians began to cause serious problems. Where did the Chelsea fans go? 🐜 — Flamengo (@Flamengo_en) June 20, 2025 Gerson should have equalised when he cut back inside Colwill to create an opportunity but his mishit shot was intercepted by Trevoh Chalobah. It rebounded to Gonzalo Plata but he somehow poked wide. Chelsea were inches away from a second when Leo Pereira, under pressure from Delap, clipped the ball narrowly past his own post but the Blues had little control. They had another escape when Sanchez tipped over from Plata. The equaliser came just after the hour when Plata headed back across goal and Henrique raced in to pounce at the back post. Chelsea were reeling and were stung again just moments later as Henrique turned provider to head back a corner for Danilo to volley in. Nicolas Jackson's foul on Ayrton Lucas earned him a red card (Chris Szagola/AP) Chelsea's capitulation continued as Jackson, just minutes after coming off the bench, was given his marching orders for a reckless challenge in which he caught Ayrton Lucas on the shin with force. Yan rubbed salt in the wounds seven minutes from time when he readjusted and tucked home after getting in the way of a shot from team-mate Plata.

India future already looking bright as new generation step up to fill Kohli and Sharma void
LEEDS, England, June 20 (Reuters) - The retirement of two Indian batting icons in less than a year piled the pressure on the next generation to step up, and new skipper Shubman Gill and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal look ready to fill the void left by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Losing the India bowler with the second-most test wickets in Ravichandran Ashwin as well as former captains Kohli and Rohit in quick succession left India facing a daunting task during their tour of England. With England missing several frontline bowlers through injury for the series opener at Headingley, India were keen to make their mark. Jaiswal and Gill proved that there is still plenty of depth left in the Indian batting line-up, with both scoring centuries on Friday as the visitors piled on the runs to end day one of the first test on 359-3. The next 10 tests could define how the combination of skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum are viewed, after plenty of highs and lows over the past few years, with the Ashes series in Australia following India's visit. Putting India into bat to apply further pressure, at a ground where each of the previous six test matches have been won by the side bowling first, 23-year-old Jaiswal proved that the tourists had quickly transitioned from the old to the new. The scourge of England, however, was not overawed by any stretch, as he became the first Indian batter to score centuries in his first match in both Australia and England with a flawless display of off-side batting. Three of Jaiswal's five centuries have come against England. In total, he has now amassed a colossal 813 runs in 10 tests when facing McCullum's side. "We spoke a lot in the middle (with Gill) and we just made sure we tried to play session by session," Jaiswal told reporters. "Try to get as many runs as we can get, put the ball in the right places. "We enjoy playing together, there is amazing camaraderie between us. The way he batted was incredible, so calm and composed given the circumstances. I always enjoy batting with him. "Everywhere I go, everything I do in cricket, I love it. Of course some moments are more special than others." While Jaiswal dealt with the heat on a scorching Leeds day, Gill could not have been under more scrutiny. Without a test century outside of Asia, Gill came to the crease in Kohli's number four position in the order, with quick wickets before lunch swinging the momentum in England's favour. After back-to-back fours in the 32nd over settled his early nerves, Gill sprayed boundaries to all corners, bringing up his hundred with a glorious drive through the covers. Just five India captains have reached three figures in their first match as skipper. Gill now has the opportunity on day two to go really big and really make his mark.
