Amazon Prime viewers 'in tears' after watching 'devastating' war film
The war film still has people talking years after its release
Over 15 years since its release, the film continues to haunt audiences, with many describing it as "absolutely devastating". Asa Butterfield delivers a poignant performance as an eight year old boy in The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, a film set amidst the terror of World War II.
Adapted from John Boyne's novel, the narrative unfolds within Nazi-occupied Poland and confronts viewers with a deeply moving plot that often reduces them to tears.
A critic on Rotten Tomatoes reflected: "Such a heartbreaking story about love, friendship, and the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust. Other than Schindler's List, I've never sobbed so hard in my life."
The 2008 film features the actor known for Netflix's Sex Education as young Bruno, whose life is uprooted when his father, an SS officer, gets a promotion that necessitates a move to Poland.
During one of his explorations, Bruno discovers what he thinks is a farm behind his house, which is actually a concentration camp, leading his mother to forbid him from playing there.
Defying his mother's orders, Bruno ventures into the woods where he encounters a barbed wire fence encircling the camp. On the other side, he meets Smuel, a boy his own age, sparking an unlikely friendship, reports the Express.
Bruno starts visiting Smuel regularly, bringing him food across the fence, and soon realises that his new friend is a Jewish child who was taken to the camp along with his parents.
A review gushes: "This movie had me in tears after knowing the plot of it. It breaks my heart seeing the plot twist of the story.
"Seeing that Bruno was sorry and wanted to help Shmuel but ended up in a twisted fate, it awfully does break my heart. I'd definitely say this is a must watch movie if you badly want to cry."
Another viewer commented: "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a masterpiece. Highly absorbing and moving film. It makes me cry every time I watch it. Absolutely love it. One of my all-time favourites. It is one of those movies that goes straight to the heart."
However, since its premiere, numerous critics have condemned the film for its historical depiction, suggesting it could inadvertently foster sympathy for Holocaust perpetrators.
A critical review states: "The story is exactly what comes out when a daydreaming, ignorant filmmaker tries to invent a cliché Holocaust drama in his own Hollywood bubble."
It is important to recognise the significant role both the children's novel and the cinematic version have played in educating young people about the Holocaust.
Holocaust education expert Michael Grey notes with interest that over three-quarters of British students (aged 13-14) engage more deeply with The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas compared to The Diary of Anne Frank.

During a discussion on Wednesday at Newsweek's Manhattan office, Nixon, who is not Jewish herself, shared that her son was partially inspired to support Palestine because his paternal grandparents are Holocaust survivors. The actress and activist, best known for playing Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City and its reboot And Just Like That, revealed: "He and five other of his compatriots are doing a hunger strike in Chicago [since] Monday, for Gaza. 'Stop starving Gaza, stop arming Israel'." Nixon, 59, described her son as "a smart person with his ear to the ground" and added: "His grandparents were Holocaust survivors, and he just feels like he can't stand by and not do everything he can." The actress went on a hunger strike herself in November 2023 as she called on Joe Biden, the US President at the time, to support a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine. Addressing a crowd outside the White House, Nixon said at the time: "As the mother of Jewish children whose grandparents are Holocaust survivors, I have been asked by my son to use any voice I have to affirm as loudly as possible that 'never again' means 'never again for everyone.'" "In seven weeks, Israel has killed more civilians on a tiny strip of land than was killed in 20 years of war in the entire country of Afghanistan. "I am sick and tired of people explaining away by saying that civilian casualties are a routine toll of war. There is nothing routine about these figures. There is nothing routine about these deaths." Nixon made a heartfelt plea to Biden, suggesting that his own personal tragedies should make him more empathetic towards the Palestinian death toll. "I would like to make a personal plea to a president who has, himself, experienced such devastating personal loss, to connect with that empathy for which he is so well known and to look at the children of Gaza and imagine that they were his children," she implored.

Wednesday - Netflix, August 6 14 HIT series Wednesday became Netflix's most-watched English-language series of all time, in large part thanks to Jenna Ortega's deadpan performance of the iconic Addams Family character. And after solidifying itself in pop culture with the help of a viral dance, there's little surprise the series is back, this time with a darker mystery. Wednesday returns to boarding school Nevermore only to discover there is a serial killer on the loose. Series two brings back fan favourites Morticia, Gomez and Pugsley, while fresh faces on the cast list include Steve Buscemi and Joanna Lumley. Uefa Women's Euros - ITV & BBC, from July 2 THE BBC and ITV are sharing coverage of the Women's Euros in Switzerland as the Lionesses, captained by Leah Williamson try to retain their crown. BBC Sport will air half of the group-stage matches, including both England and Wales' games against the Netherlands, as well as three of the tense quarter-finals. Commentary and analysis will come from Gabby Logan, Jeanette Kwakye, Alex Scott, Ellen White, Jill Scott and Steph Houghton. The England v Wales clash on July 13 will be a big live draw for ITV. The series follows sharp-witted retirees – ex-spy Elizabeth, former union activist Ron, retired psychiatrist Ibrahim and nurse Joyce – in a fancy village for old folks who meet to solve cold cases. But then they find themselves caught up in a current murder that happens on their doorstep – and like the nosy old folk they are, they get to work trying to solve it. With a cast list that includes Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, above, plus Sir Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, David Tennant, Sir Jonathan Pryce and Tom Ellis, this one is not to be missed.
