West Indies' top T20 batter Nicholas Pooran retires from internationals

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (AP) — Nicholas Pooran, West Indies' Twenty20 record-holder for runs and appearances, retired from international cricket on Monday.
Pooran, 29, made the announcement on Instagram.
'Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me,' he wrote. 'To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.'
Pooran was suspended briefly in late 2019 after admitting to ball-tampering against Afghanistan, and overcame that to be named West Indies T20 vice captain about 18 months later for a tour by Australia. But he became captain when Kieron Pollard couldn't play, and led the team to a 4-1 series win.
In 2022, he was named the permanent white-ball captain and took the team to that year's T20 World Cup in Australia, but in fallout from a first-round elimination he resigned.
He starred when the West Indies hosted the T20 World Cup last year, overtaking Chris Gayle as the team's all-time leading scorer, and hitting his highest T20 score, 98 against Afghanistan.
Pooran played 106 T20s for 2,275 runs at an average of 26.14. He also played 61 one-day internationals, including three centuries and one World Cup.
Cricket West Indies praised Pooran as a game-changer, and with 'sincere gratitude and appreciation ... for his outstanding contributions. His performances on the field and influence within the team have made a lasting impact on West Indies cricket.'

Australia drops Labuschagne, Smith out injured for cricket test series opener in the West Indies

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP) — Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped and injured Steve Smith has been ruled out of the Australia lineup for next week's series-opening cricket test against the West Indies. Cricket Australia on Friday said Smith would miss the opening match of the three-test seies because of a finger injury sustained in the World Test Championship final loss to South Africa last weekend at Lord's. He is expected to be fit for the second test against the West Indies. Chief selector George Bailey said teenage opener Sam Konstas and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis would replace Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. He said Smith needed more time for a wound to heal and he'd be reassessed after an another week. 'We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus,' Bailey said. 'We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling test careers.' The 19-year-old Konstas has only played two tests, bursting onto the scene with an almost run-a-ball 60 against India in the Boxing Day test in Melbourne last December. The 30-year-old Inglis has played mostly short-form cricket for Australia, playing his only two test matches to date in the series win in Sri Lanka in February, where he scored a century on debut. 'In his only opportunity in test cricket to date, Josh was outstanding in Sri Lanka, showing great intent and ability to put pressure on the opposition,' Bailey said. Labuschange averages 46.19 in 104 test innings, including 11 centuries and 23 half-centuries, but has struggled for form in recent series. He hasn't scored a test hundred since the 2023 Ashes series in Manchester and hasn't scored above 26 in his most recent four test matches. Moved up to open in the WTC final against South Africa, he got starts but was out for 17 and 22. 'Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects,' Bailey said. 'We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover.' The batting order and starting XI will be determined closer to the start of the test next Wednedsay. The second test is scheduled to start July 3. ___ AP cricket:

Cricket fans celebrate Sam Konstas news as Aussie superstar axed from Test team

Australian cricket selectors have finally bit the bullet and axed Marnus Labuschagne for the first Test against the West Indies, recalling Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis to the XI. Steve Smith has also been ruled out due to a finger injury, meaning the Aussies will sport a new-look batting line-up. Selectors made the unusual move of announcing the XI a week out from the first Test in Barbados, starting next Thursday (Australian time). Labuschagne has finally paid the price for a poor run of form that's resulted in no Test centuries in the last two years. And with Smith still recovering from a finger injury suffered in the World Test Championship final last week, Konstas and Inglis are back in the XI. Konstas will open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja, while Inglis will bat in the middle-order with Cameron Green at No.3. "Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects," chief selectors George Bailey said in a statement. "We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively." Smith suffered a compound dislocation when he dropped a catch in Australia's loss to South Africa last week. He won't play in the first Test, but hasn't been ruled out of the entire three-match series as yet. "Steve needs more time for the wound to heal so we'll give him another week's rest and assess his functionality after that," Bailey said. "We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus. "We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers. In his only opportunity in Test cricket to date, Josh was outstanding in Sri Lanka, showing great intent and ability to put pressure on the opposition." Konstas burst onto the international scene with some stunning hitting against Jasprit Bumrah on Boxing Day. He was dropped for the subsequent tour of Sri Lanka, with Travis Head preferred at the top of the order. Inglis scored a stunning century on Test debut against Sri Lanka, and gets another chance to show he belongs. The decision to axe Labuschagne is long-overdue, and cricket fans took to social media on Friday to commend selectors for finally making the difficult call. Fans are also celebrating the return of Konstas - one of the most exiting young batters in world cricket. RELATED: South Africa get last laugh as Aussie sledge backfires badly Pat Cummins' key confession after rival admits to 'dodgy' act The call to axe Labuschagne goes against the wishes of former Test coach Justin Langer, who this week suggested he needed to be retained with an eye to the future. "Marnus is a 50-Test player. He's been the best player in the world. He still averages (46.19)," Langer said. "All players go through it. If you're not scoring runs, you're going to be under the spotlight. But all of a sudden David Warner leaves. And then Usman Khawaja leaves. And then Steve Smith. "If Marnus isn't playing well, you've got a huge gap there because Travis Head bats down the order. So he's actually a very, very important link in this chain here. If I was the Australian team, I'd be focusing – and I'm sure they are – all their attention on getting Marnus to come good in however that is." Finally some sense 🙌 — Joe Fortune 🇦🇺 (@JoeFortunePokie) June 19, 2025 Yeah, this is good. Marnus needs to earn his spot back. Konstas and Inglis deserve a crack. — Simon Davis (@SimonDavisTas) June 19, 2025 From considering as next Big thing to be Dropped 🥲 — Good Frog 🐸 (@_Atama_1) June 19, 2025 Probably the right tour to drop Marnus and give others an opportunity (hell yeah for Konstas). Still think he'll be in the Ashes XI though — . (@samlutd) June 19, 2025 Finally. I love Marnus but this had to happen. — GOATSTRI (@GOATSTRIISBACK) June 19, 2025 Honestly didn't think they'd drop Marnus. Good call tbh — Vincent Jones (@JonesVincentt) June 19, 2025
