BMC to integrate Mumbai Coastal Road, Atal Setu into ward boundaries

Time of Indiaa day ago

Mumbai: As BMC's election and assessment departments have begun the ward formation process, land reclaimed and carved out under major infrastructure projects, including Mumbai Coastal Road and Mumbai Trans Harbour Link or
Atal Setu
, will now be formally integrated into municipal ward boundaries, said civic officials.
These new land parcels did not exist during the last BMC elections held in 2017 — both the coastal road and Atal Setu were inaugurated in 2024.
In the case of Atal Setu, a newly created 0.35-hectare land parcel will be added to wards within the Mumbai city area, said civic officials. For Mumbai Coastal Road, 111 hectares reclaimed from the Arabian Sea will be integrated into specific corporator wards. For instance, the land reclaimed for the coastal road stretches from the administrative wards D to G-South, which comprise six and seven corporator wards, respectively.
The state urban development department had recently directed municipal commissioners to finalise new draft ward boundaries. BMC's assessment department staff have been extensively deployed for this exercise, which will continue till the first week of Sept. "On an average, a BMC corporator ward has 54,000 voters...Currently the staff on ground is certifying whether the ward boundaries are demarcated appropriately and there are proper separation indicators whether a bridge, nullah or railway track.

This is all specified and sent to the BMC. All the boundaries will be superimposed on Google Maps and then the staff will again check the same on ground. There will also be a public suggestion and objection process before the ward boundaries are finalised," said a civic officer privy of the entire process.
BMC polls may be held in Oct or Nov. BMC has been functioning without an elected body for over three years now.

B-2 bombers flew 37 hours non-stop, covered over 7000 miles: US outsmarted Iran's Russian air defense missiles to strike its nuclear sites

In a meticulously planned and unprecedented military operation, the United States on June 21 executed a large-scale airstrike on Iran's nuclear infrastructure, targeting the highly fortified Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities, bypassing Iran's dense air defense network, which includes older generation Russian-made surface-to-air missiles. The US strikes included the first-ever use of 30,000 pound (14,000 kilograms) GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator , also known as bunker busters, in combat. According to The New York Times and multiple defense sources, the US operation combined the stealth capabilities of six B-2A Spirit strategic bombers, each valued at roughly $2 billion, with the precision of submarine-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles . The bombers flew non-stop for 37 hours with multiple aerial refueling to cover the over 7000 miles (approx 11,400 kilometers) from the Missouri airbase to the target areas, marking a new chapter in the U.S. effort to halt Iran's nuclear ambitions. The arsenal: Massive Ordnance Penetrators and Tomahawk missiles The centerpiece of the airstrike was the deployment of 12 GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker-buster bombs, dropped exclusively by the B-2A Spirit bombers on the Fordow nuclear enrichment facility. Each MOP weighs approximately 30,000 pounds (13,600 kilograms) and is engineered to penetrate up to 200 feet of earth or 60 feet of reinforced concrete before detonating, making it one of the most powerful conventional bombs in the U.S. arsenal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy the Dip: Top 5 Dividend Stocks with Growth Potential Seeking Alpha Read Now Undo The MOP's warhead is encased in a high-performance steel alloy designed to maintain structural integrity upon impact, enabling it to destroy deeply buried and hardened targets that conventional munitions cannot reach. In addition to the MOPs, the Natanz and Isfahan sites were struck by a barrage of 30 submarine-launched BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles, known for their precision and reliability. Live Events The Tomahawks were complemented by two additional GBU-57A/B MOPs dropped on Natanz, underscoring the strategic importance of that site in Iran's nuclear program. The flight path: A 37-hour mission The six B-2A Spirits, operated by the U.S. Air Force 's 509th Bomb Wing, launched from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri on a mission lasting approximately 37 hours. The bombers refueled multiple times mid-air to cover the vast distance to Iran and back, demonstrating the B-2's extraordinary range and endurance. The stealth design of the B-2, featuring radar-absorbing materials and a low radar cross-section comparable to a small bird, allowed the bombers to penetrate Iranian airspace undetected, evading sophisticated surface-to-air missile defenses protecting the Fordow site. Each B-2 bomber can carry up to two GBU-57 MOPs due to the bomb's massive size, and the aircraft's internal weapons bays are optimized for stealth and payload delivery. The B-2's bat-like aerodynamic shape and advanced automation systems reduce pilot workload during such complex missions, enabling precise targeting of hardened underground facilities. Why these targets? Fordow: Built 300 feet beneath a mountain and shielded by Russian-supplied air defenses, Fordow is considered the crown jewel of Iran's nuclear program. It houses approximately 1,000 centrifuges used for uranium enrichment and has long been a challenge for airstrike planners due to its depth and fortifications. The use of multiple MOPs aimed to obliterate this key site, which President Trump declared 'gone' after the strikes. Natanz: Iran's main uranium enrichment facility, Natanz, was targeted with a mix of Tomahawk missiles and two MOP bombs. The strikes focused on above-ground infrastructure and underground cascades of centrifuges, aiming to disrupt Iran's uranium production capabilities. Isfahan: This site, involved in uranium conversion and fuel production, was hit primarily by Tomahawk missiles, damaging critical buildings but reportedly without radiological leakage.

Did pizza orders predict US strike on Iran? Social media account spots surge near Pentagon; alerts surfaced just before Trump confirmed bombing

Representative Image A spike in pizza orders outside the Pentagon on Saturday night led a quirky social media account to suggest that something big was about to happen. Turns out, they were right. The Pentagon Pizza Report is an online page that has gained attention for tracking food delivery trends near US military hubs. The page flagged 'HIGH activity' at a Papa John's near the Pentagon shortly before US President Donald Trump confirmed that American warplanes had bombed three nuclear sites in Iran. Less than an hour after the pizza traffic alert, Trump posted on his Truth Social account that the US military had launched a successful strike on Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, which are three key locations linked to Iran's nuclear enrichment programme. 'A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow,' Trump wrote. 'Thank you for your attention to this matter.' The account repeated the MAGA chief's words in a follow-up post, saying, 'Thank you for your attention to this matter.' Adding to the buzz, the same page noted 'abnormally low activity levels' at Freddie's Beach Bar, a well-known place near the Pentagon often mentioned in such posts. 'Classic indicator for potential overtime at the Pentagon,' the account said, suggesting that the quiet night could mean people were working late or something important was going on. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jolie-Pitt Family Expresses Support For Shiloh's Change Drivepedia Undo At around 9:36pm Eastern Time, about half an hour before Trump's national address, the account also noted a 'HUGE traffic surge' at the Domino's near MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. This base is home to CENTCOM, the US military command that oversees operations in the Middle East. Trump, in his evening remarks, warned Iran of future consequences if it continued its hostile actions. 'Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace,' he said. 'If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier.' The Pentagon Pizza Report became known earlier when it correctly guessed the timing of Israel's June 12 strikes on Iran, reports Fox News. The account mixes humour with analysis and has gained a small following for its unusual but sometimes accurate way of tracking military activity by watching fast-food orders.

Trump's doublespeak on Iran allowed Israeli blitz, then US B-2 bombers, Tomahawks rained hell on Tehran's nuclear sites

Trump's messaging on Iran strategy sparks confusion and global uncertainty President Donald Trump's handling of the Iran crisis is drawing scrutiny from diplomats and foreign policy analysts, following a pattern of conflicting public statements and unannounced strategic shifts that culminated in US airstrikes on Iran 's nuclear facilities. The airstrikes, which targeted Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan on Saturday, June 21, came just two days after reports suggested Trump had given Iran a two-week window for further nuclear negotiations. That followed earlier signals from the White House indicating that Israel would hold back from unilateral strikes, messages that were swiftly upended when Israel launched Operation Rising Lion on June 13, targeting Iranian nuclear and military assets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo Also read: US President Donald Trump's step back on Iran pacifies nervous market The sequence of events has left global observers questioning whether the US president's diplomatic posturing is deliberately opaque or lacking internal coordination. Live Events Shift from talks to airstrikes raises questions about US policy coherence In a Truth Social post early Saturday morning, June 21, just hours before the airstrikes, Trump promoted his record of brokering peace across global conflicts, including efforts between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and cited his work on the Abraham Accords, India-Pakistan tensions, and Egypt-Ethiopia disputes. He suggested that his peace efforts have gone unrecognized by international institutions. However, within hours, US B-2 stealth bombers launched attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, signaling a sharp escalation. In the same post-strike update, Trump claimed the Fordow facility was 'gone' and called the attack 'very successful,' while also asserting that 'now is the time for peace.' The abrupt shift has raised doubts about whether Trump's administration is pursuing a coherent strategy or simply reacting to events on the ground. Diplomatic sources say there had been ongoing communication between US and Iranian intermediaries in Geneva as recently as Friday, June 20. Also read: Trump weighs military action on Iran, to make a decision within two weeks, says White House 'This strategy of calculated unpredictability may serve short-term tactical goals,' said one European diplomat on condition of anonymity, 'but it erodes long-term trust in US commitments.' Pattern of mixed signals complicates international response This is not the first instance in which Trump's statements have contradicted unfolding realities. Prior to Israel's Operation Rising Lion, Trump officials had suggested that Israeli strikes were unlikely in the near term. Instead, the operation began on June 13, catching several allies off guard. Now, the pattern appears to have repeated with the US itself. After hinting at diplomatic off-ramps and timelines for talks, the administration moved to a full kinetic strike with little public warning. As Iran signals possible retaliation, allies and adversaries alike are left navigating a volatile situation shaped as much by unpredictability as policy.
