Actress Malavika Mohanan recalls terrifying moment in Mumbai local train: 'We were just 3 young girls'

Thangalaan actress Malavika Mohanan begs to differ. In a candid and deeply personal conversation with Hauterrfly, Malavika shed light on the everyday anxiety women face, especially during their early years navigating public spaces. Her story isn't just a reflection of her own experiences but echoes the concerns of many women who live, work, and travel in the city. Malavika recalled a disturbing incident from her college days that continues to haunt her. Travelling on a local train around 9:30 pm with two close friends, she was in what's presumed to be a safe space—the first-class women's compartment. 'The train was quite empty. We were sitting near one of the window grills, chatting, when a man walked up to the window, stuck his face right up against the bars and said, 'Ek chumma degi kya?'' she shared. 'We froze… We were just three young girls, completely vulnerable.' She added that while today she feels safer thanks to personal transport and a driver, her past experiences paint a far more complicated picture. She feels that it's always felt like a matter of luck, hoping that her commute would be uneventful. While discussing the improvement of safety on film sets, Malavika Mohanan emphasised the need for both practical infrastructure and a more empathetic approach. She pointed out that providing essentials like pick-up and drop services, along with proper hygiene facilities, should be the norm. However, she emphasised that the more pressing issue lies in how women's concerns are often overlooked or dismissed. According to her, real change will only begin when women are genuinely heard and their experiences taken seriously. About Malavika's upcoming work Malavika Mohanan has wrapped up filming for Sardar 2, the sequel to the 2022 spy thriller Sardar. Sharing behind-the-scenes photos from the Thailand shoot on Instagram, Malavika called the project a "mad ride" and praised co-star Karthi and director PS Mithran for the experience. She noted that the role was unlike anything she had done before. A day earlier, Karthi had also announced the film's wrap with crew pictures. Sardar 2 features Karthi in dual roles and also stars Ashika Ranganath, Yogi Babu, and Rajisha Vijayan. The film is expected to hit theatres soon.
