Serembu rep urges bigger budget to boost Sarawak's ruminant industry to achieve 50 pct self-sufficiency

KUCHING (May 23): Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh has proposed a larger budget allocation to further enhance the ruminant industry in Sarawak under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) with the aim of achieving at least 50 per cent self-sufficiency in meeting local market demand.
At the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today, he said the policy direction for the development of the ruminant industry in Sarawak should prioritise improving productivity, reducing dependency on imported meat, enhancing genetic management efficiency, and ultimately strengthening income generation for farmers involved.
'However, current productivity levels in the ruminant industry remain very low. We are still heavily reliant on imported meat to meet domestic needs.
'Based on available data, the self-sufficiency level of our ruminant industry in Sarawak has yet to reach even 20 per cent,' he revealed.
As such, Miro reiterated the need for a substantial allocation in the upcoming 13MP to strengthen the industry and help Sarawak meet at least half of its local demand through domestic production.
He also called for greater focus on the Sarawak Ruminant Policy, led by the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS), which he said should prioritise three key areas.
Firstly, the policy should emphasise genetic quality enhancement and increased domestic breeding.
These efforts, he added, would help grow the number of livestock farmers in the state, including both smallholders and large-scale private sector investors operating modern farms.
'Only with financial assistance and government support can we afford to import diverse, high-quality breeds for breeding purposes in Sarawak, and thereby increase the number of cattle and goats available locally,' he said.
Secondly, Miro underlined the importance of developing local animal feed production, describing it as a critical supporting industry within the livestock production cycle.
'The government could introduce specific incentives to encourage more local investors to venture into feed manufacturing.
'With the presence of local feed mills, the livestock and ruminant industries will be further stimulated in the years to come,' he said.
Thirdly, he proposed that DVSS plan more courses and training programmes for those interested in joining the ruminant industry.
'Technical training, technology transfer, and sound farm management are essential to prepare and support aspiring livestock farmers,' he said. 13MP DUN Miro Simuh ruminant industry self sufficiency

Govt sets up committee to fast-track rural development projects in Sarawak

BETONG: The Rural and Regional Development Ministry has set up a Project Monitoring and Coordination Committee, chaired by its Deputy Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang, to ensure smoother implementation of rural development projects in Sarawak. Deputy Prime Minister and Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the committee was formed after the ministry identified delays and technical issues affecting several projects, including problems related to land status. "The establishment of this committee was the result of a ministry-level decision, following the discovery that several projects were facing implementation challenges, particularly involving unresolved land ownership or status issues," he said. He was speaking to the media after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a road from Kampung Kupang to Simpang Jalan Bajau in Rumah Rengan, Saratok, today. He said coordination between federal and state agencies was crucial to expedite the implementation of projects, especially those involving allocations of less than RM50 million. "As decided by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, projects worth less than RM50 million will be handed over to the state government for implementation. "This requires close coordination and we at the ministry will continue to provide full support to the state government in its implementation," he said. Under the committee, Zahid said the scope of work for projects being implemented in Sarawak which currently cannot be changed due to several constraints will be done under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). "Currently, this is under the responsibility of the state government and although we have several constraints to change the scope, it is not impossible in the 13MP if we can discuss in detail the joint implementation between the state government and the federal government," he said. Reviewing the infrastructure development in Sarawak, he praised the state government's initiative in building coastal roads which not only connect the route to the Pan Borneo Highway but also play an important role in connecting longhouses and traditional villages. One of the areas of responsibility for this coordination committee is to build a road connecting longhouses and traditional villages so that we do not face what is called denial syndrome by various parties, but it is better for the benefit of the people to do this coordination," he added. "This is also part of the ministry's responsibility and this is the main role of this coordination committee, which is to prevent the existence of 'denial syndrome' among stakeholders," he said. He added that effective coordination will ensure that the planned development truly benefits the people, especially in the interior areas. Meanwhile, the construction of the road involves upgrading the existing main road connecting Kampung Kupang and Simpang Jalan Bajau, from a gravel road to a paved road according to the JKRR2 Standard, with an estimated length of 16.9 kilometres. It also involves upgrading the existing connecting road to the JKRR1 standard leading to the school and longhouse, namely: Jalan Cabang 1 to SK Sungai Entebu, 86 metres long, Jalan Cabang 2 to Rumah Anau, 86 metres long 100 metres, Jalan Cabang 3 to Rumah Lakon, 1,175 metres long, Jalan Cabang 4 to Rumah Rabiah, 1,646 metres long, construction of five reinforced concrete bridges, drainage systems, culverts, road pavement and shoulder as well as installation of road signs and road fixtures. The project, which began in January for RM112.9 million, is expected to be completed in September 2027.

DVSS honoured for sustainable agriculture at GovMedia Awards 2025

KUCHING (June 22): The Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) has won the 'Malaysia Sustainability Initiative of the Year – Agriculture category' at the GovMedia Awards 2025, held recently in Singapore. According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the award recognises DVSS' exemplary effort in transforming the state's agricultural landscape through its Pasir Puteh Pig Farming Area (PFA). DVSS director Datu Dr Adrian Susin Ambud received the award at the ceremony. 'The GovMedia Awards recognise trends and best practices that are transforming the public sector across the Asia Pacific. 'The awards programme promotes excellence and provides a platform for exemplary government initiatives,' the report stated. The Pasir Puteh PFA, located in Simunjan, spans 804 hectares and is situated just four kilometres off the main Serian-Sri Aman Road. Its development aligns with the National Agriculture Policy's vision of modernising the livestock industry. Since its establishment, the facility has implemented centralised systems for waste treatment and disease control, as an effort to enhance efficiency and sustainability. The PFA also employs stringent biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks and ensure animal health, safeguarding both consumer wellbeing and environmental quality. Since 2017, the facility has exported over 675,000 porkers worth RM742.5 million to Singapore. The current standing pig population (SPP) at the PFA is estimated at 135,000 heads. The Pasir Puteh PFA aims to reach its full capacity of 250,000 SPP by 2030. This expansion will include the development of additional modern pig farms in Ensengei, Serian and Selangau, Sibu, with a projected combined capacity of 500,000 SPP. These initiatives are expected to contribute RM1.5 billion in annual revenue, positioning Sarawak as a key regional exporter of pork products.

13MP will give more leeway to surging cooperative movement

PUTRAJAYA: The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which will be finalised next week, is expected to provide more space and opportunities for the cooperative movement to grow and continue to contribute significantly to the country's economic development. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said his ministry had submitted several proposed agendas and specific initiatives for the cooperative sector for the five-year plan, which covers the years 2026 to 2030. 'I am confident that this will be part of the country's 13MP agenda which will be finalised by the Cabinet next week,' he said after officiating the 2025 National Cooperative Month (BKK 2025) here today. Also present were Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (KUSKOP) secretary-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud, Malaysian Cooperatives Commission (SKM) chairman Lt Gen (Rtd) Datuk Ahmad Norihan Jalal and Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (Angkasa) president Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Fattah Abdullah. Commenting on the main agenda of 13MP In developing the cooperative sector further, Ewon said the ministry was given a target to generate RM100 billion in revenue from the cooperative movement. 'At the initial briefing of the Cabinet, we were informed about a big agenda in the 13MP to strengthen cooperatives further. Hopefully, the cooperative movement will not only be able to meet this revenue we are targeting, but will also be able to increase its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP),' he said. Yesterday, government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the Minister of Communications, announced that 13MP under the MADANI Government is to be tabled in Parliament on July 28. Commenting on the performance of the cooperative sector so far, Ewon announced that the value of cooperatives' turnover in 2024 would reach RM68.18 billion, exceeding the target set in the Malaysian Cooperative Policy (DAKOM) 2030. 'Our target by 2030 is RM100 billion. However, I challenge that the cooperative movement not to be judged solely by revenue (the amount of turnover), but rather by its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP),' he said. In the past two years, he said that more than 1,000 new cooperatives have been registered each year, indicating a positive response among Malaysians toward the movement. He attributed this growth to the efforts of various parties including the Malaysian Cooperative Institute (IKMa) as well as the collaboration of Angkasa in promoting cooperatives as a lifestyle for Malaysians. Ewon also announced that the closing ceremony for National Cooperative Day celebration will be held on July 27, 2025 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh, Melaka.
