Terrified family who were viciously attacked by dog suddenly told 'crime is closed' by police
A terrified family who were the victims of a vicious dog attack in north Manchester have claimed they were told by police the 'crime would be closed' just days after the incident was reported. Miro was walking his small dog Remy, a Pomeranian weighing just two kilos, near his home in Newton Heath when he was approached by the larger dog, thought to be a neighbour's, on Windsor Road on Sunday (June 1). He claims the other dog charged towards him before latching onto his arm and hand while repeatedly biting him and jumping up. The horror ordeal was then caught on CCTV cameras nearby and show Miro trying to desperately protect his pet while running away. "It noticed us, looked at us and immediately ran over and began attacking my dog. "I grabbed my dog and it bit me on the other hand, then my back, and my arms, and was jumping up at me. It wouldn't let go." He claimed the dog then followed him to his home and then began attacking his partner, before he was able to pick the dog up and 'throw' it outside. Footage captured the moment the dog began the attack, with graphic images showing the extent of Miro's injuries. He and his partner were left needing stitches after sustaining deep bite marks to his arms, hands and back. They also had vaccinations and X-rays in hospital. Speaking of the moment he 'threw' the attacking dog outside of his home, Miro added: "It was the adrenaline, but it was terrifying. "I just wanted to protect my dog and my partner and try to keep us safe." The incident was reported to Greater Manchester Police who began an investigation. However, eight days later, he received a text from the force telling him the 'crime would be closed' as all investigative avenues had been exhausted. Yet the force has since told the M.E.N that an investigation is ongoing to determine which dog attacked him. "The information you provided was recorded and helped us to complete an initial investigation," the text said. "With no further avenues to investigate, the crime will now be closed. "GMP understands this might not have been the outcome you hoped for." Miro was left confused, claiming the dog is regularly off-leash in the area, and that nearby families have been left 'too scared' to let their children play out. "All we got was this text out of the blue, and later an email, telling us it had been closed," he said. "I can't comfortably say what the opinion of the police is because we haven't had an explanation. "All I know is there is one dog that looks like this on this street. What else can we do? The police have photos, videos and evidence. It's a difficult situation. We thought we were safe, but we don't feel it now. "My injuries are healing; I was at the hospital yesterday and was told it will still need to be dressed for a week. We are more worried about the psychological impact on us and those living on this street who are too scared to let their children play out. That's the impact here. We did everything we could." After contacting GMP, the force said the investigation is ongoing to try and gather evidence to determine which dog attacked him. --- Day in day out, our reporters in the Manchester Evening News newsroom bring you remarkable stories from all aspects of Mancunian life. Fuzzy's Taco Shop to expand with new Texas location
American fast-casual restaurant chain Fuzzy's Taco Shop is set to expand its footprint with the launch of its latest establishment, Fuzzy's Tacos and Margs, in the city of Sugar Land, Texas. This new location, set to open on 16 June, at 1912 Wescott Ave, marks a departure from the brand's traditional service model by offering tableside service instead of the customary counter order and pickup window. The Sugar Land restaurant is pioneering the brand's fresh dining experience, complete with full-service hospitality and digital innovations. A refreshed menu will focus on a variety of tacos, including the Texas Brisket Taco, the Cali-Style Steak Taco and the vegetarian-friendly Sonora Relleno, featuring a fried poblano pepper, and the brand's Ultimate Nachos. Guests can also create their own taco combinations. The beverage menu at the new Fuzzy's location has also been updated, featuring cocktails such as the Paloma 'Rita, with a bottle of grapefruit Jarritos, the Watermelon 'Rita, and frozen drinks such as the Fuzz Driver and Double Rum Daiquiri. Fuzzy's president Patrick Kirk stated: 'We're excited to pilot this new model that puts hospitality front and centre while simplifying the overall experience for our guests. 'Sugar Land is helping us find that sweet spot between fast-casual and full-service, with a streamlined menu, bold new taco creations, and a margarita lineup that puts our bar front and centre.' The Sugar Land restaurant is owned by the NGE Group, with brothers Miro and Andrew Nazarian in charge of its operation. The group has agreed to launch three Fuzzy's locations by the end of 2025. The restaurant will open seven days a week, with extended hours on weekends. This strategic expansion follows the chain's recent entry into California, as it continues to grow its presence across the US. Spain gears up for year-long celebration of surrealist Joan Miro
Miro, who died in 1983 aged 90, was a giant of the surrealist movement, known for his playful, abstract paintings with bright geometric forms and doodle-like calligraphic lines. The Joan Miro Foundation, which he established in a purpose-built modernist structure on top of a hill in Barcelona in 1975, now houses a vast collection of his canvases, sculptures and other works. The institution is planning a year-long series of events to mark the half-century, ranging from exhibitions and concerts to a sunrise visit to its hilltop building. "In these 50 years, we've gone from being an artist's dream to becoming a cultural reference point in Barcelona and around the world," said foundation director Marko Daniel. The foundation traces its roots back to the early 1970s, when Miro -- then living in the nearby island of Mallorca -- sought to reconnect with his native city by creating a centre for contemporary art studies. His close friend, architect Josep Lluis Sert, designed the distinctive white-concrete building nestled on Montjuic hill, overlooking Barcelona. The foundation opened quietly on June 10, 1975, at Miro's request to avoid an official ceremony during the final months of General Francisco Franco's dictatorship. A more celebratory inauguration followed a year later, after the dictator's death. The anniversary celebrations kick off on Wednesday with the opening of an exhibition of photos, press clippings and architectural plans which trace the institution's evolution over the years. The foundation will open its doors on Sunday at sunrise to allow visitors to experience the building bathed in the light of dawn. "Miro left us not only a building, a unique institution, and a remarkable collection, but also a way of seeing the world," said Daniel. US ties explored One of the highlights of the anniversary will be the opening in October of "Miro and the United States", an exhibition examining the surrealist artist's connections with America -- a relationship less documented than his ties to France. Miro visited the United States seven times between 1947 and 1968, and the show will feature works by American icons such as Louise Bourgeois, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko alongside the Spanish artist's own pieces. (Photo by Manaure QUINTERO / AFP) After its Barcelona run, the show will travel to the Phillips Collection in Washington DC in March where it will remain on display until July 2026. "This will become the most important exhibition on Miro ever held in the United States," said the foundation's director of artistic programming, Ana Ara. Next year the foundation will carry out a major reorganisation of its permanent collection, with more interpretive material added to help visitors understand how the artist conceived each piece. "We want to place the visitor right in the moment when Miro was creating these works," Ara said. Miro initially drew inspiration from artists such as Vincent van Gogh or Paul Cezanne before developing his own unique style. French writer Andre Breton, leader of the surrealism movement, once called Miro "the most surrealist of us all".
