Howell man arrested in shooting death
HOWELL — A township man has been arrested on murder charges in the shooting death of a 36-year-old whose body was found in a parked vehicle 10 days ago, officials said.
Juan Jesus Mejia Yanza, 33, of Howell was charged with first-degree murder and two related second-degree weapons offenses, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, which issued a release on the murder charge.
Yanza is accused of killing Rolando Acte Mejia, 36, of Howell, who died from two gunshot wounds. His body was found around 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, inside a vehicle parked on White Street, officials said.
An investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Howell Township Police Department led to Yanza's arrest Friday, investigators said. He was taken into custody at his home without incident.
Yanza is being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution pending future proceedings in Monmouth County Superior Court. No motive or other information was released.
Anyone who may have information about this incident is urged to contact Detective Kayla Santiago of the Prosecutor's Office at 800-533-7443 or Detective Vincent Bonner of the Howell Police Department at 732-938-4111.

Free State man charged with murder after wife's body found in bathtub
A Free State man was arrested after his wife was found murdered in their bathtub in Riverside, Phuthaditjhaba. The incident occurred on Thursday, 20 June, at about 16:00. The 41-year-old woman's son found her body after he noticed signs of 'a violent altercation' last Thursday. According to police spokesperson, Captain Loraine Earle, the 45-year-old man is expected to appear in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of murder. 'Police were alerted to a possible murder, and upon arrival, were met by the deceased's son, who led officers to the bathroom where the woman's lifeless body was found in a bathtub,' said Earle. She said the victim had a visible deep open wound to the head. 'The son, who does not reside at the home, stated that he had come to visit his mother and, upon finding the house locked, forced entry through the kitchen door.' Inside, he discovered signs of a violent altercation, including a broken mirror, bloodstains on the walls and running water from the bathroom. He alerted a neighbour, who contacted the police. The victim's husband, who was not at the scene, later contacted police and disclosed his location. He was arrested shortly afterwards. The alleged murder weapon was recovered and has been confiscated, Earle said.

New York's Prisons Were in Crisis. Did Hochul Do Enough to Fix Them?
In response to crises inside New York State's prisons, Gov. Kathy Hochul said this winter that swift action in Albany would hold corrections officers accountable and keep inmates safer. In the legislative session that ended Wednesday, the governor directed $400 million to increase camera coverage in prisons. She replaced the head of the prison where an inmate had been savagely beaten to death and ordered reviews of 'safety gaps' in several lockups and assessments of their operating cultures. But she has not committed to signing a package of bills meant to increase prison oversight that originated with reform-minded lawmakers. Criminal justice advocates and some legislators were also left disappointed that she has not championed measures that would increase the chances for inmates to gain early release and make it easier to discipline officers. They accuse Ms. Hochul of prioritizing expedient and incremental policies to court moderate voters as she gears up for re-election next year. 'As public servants, we have to lead with a great deal of courage and moral clarity,' Emily Gallagher, a Democratic assemblywoman who represents parts of North Brooklyn, said of the governor. 'There is a tension between good policy that protects all residents of New York State,' added Ms. Gallagher, who has been endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America and supported the prison bills. 'And the fear of this right-wing political moment that we're in.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
