Reportedly, the Swedish buy-now-pay-later giant Klarna premiered an 83-second video featuring an AI rendition of its co-founder and CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, to unveil its Q1 2025 financial performance. Addressing viewers with the opening line, 'It's me, or rather, my AI avatar,' the digital Siemiatkowski guided audiences through the results. Klarna, which has been transparent about integrating AI into its operations, recently attributed part of its workforce reductions to efficiencies gained from machine-learning investments.
During Zoom's Q1 2026 earnings call, CEO Eric Yuan introduced a new twist by presenting part of the report through a digital avatar created using the company's own AI Companion tool. 'I'm using our custom avatars for Zoom Clips with AI Companion to deliver my section of the earnings update,' announced the lifelike avatar. A subtle watermark indicated that the video segment had been generated using Zoom's AI technology. Yuan later joined the live Q&A session in person, where he shared his excitement about the virtual avatar and hinted that such AI-powered representations could soon play a larger role in business communications.
These developments underscore an emerging trend among technology leaders keen to demonstrate their organisations' AI prowess not only in product development, but in high-visibility investor relations. French streaming service Deezer is now alerting users when they come across music identified as completely generated by artificial intelligence, the company told AFP on Friday in what it called a global first. The announcement by chief executive Alexis Lanternier follows repeated statements from the platform that a torrent of AI-generated tracks is being uploaded daily -- a challenge Deezer shares with other streaming services including Swedish heavyweight Spotify . Deezer said in January that it was receiving uploads of 10,000 AI tracks a day, doubling to over 20,000 in an April statement -- or around 18% of all music added to the platform. The company "wants to make sure that royalties supposed to go to artists aren't being taken away" by tracks generated from a brief text prompt typed into a music generator like Suno or Udio , Lanternier said. AI tracks are not being removed from Deezer's library, but instead are demonetised to avoid unfairly reducing human musicians' royalties. Albums containing tracks suspected of being created in this way are now flagged with a notice reading "content generated by AI", a move Deezer says is a global first for a streaming service. Lanternier said Deezer's home-grown detection tool was able to spot markers of AI provenance with 98% accuracy. "An audio signal is an extremely complex bundle of information. When AI algorithms generate a new song, there are little sounds that only they make which give them away... that we're able to spot," he said. "It's not audible to the human ear, but it's visible in the audio signal." With 9.7 million subscribers worldwide, most of them in France, Deezer is a relative minnow compared to Spotify, which has 268 million. The Swedish firm in January signed a deal supposed to better remunerate artists and other rights holders with the world's biggest label, Universal Music Group . But Spotify has not taken the same path as Deezer of demonetising AI content. It has pointed to the lack of a clear definition for completely AI-generated audio, as well as any legal framework setting it apart from human-created works.

Digital payments for ads or software? Here's where TDS may surprise you

Freelancers, small business owners, and e-commerce sellers are increasingly relying on digital platforms for advertising, software, and sales. But these payments often come with tax obligations that many overlook, especially under India's Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) rules. Experts say a good starting point is identifying whether the payment is made to an Indian or foreign company. 'This is crucial, as domestic payments are governed by Sections 194C and 194J, while international ones fall under Section 195,' says Ankit Jain, partner at a chartered accountancy firm, Ved Jain and Associates. Domestic versus foreign payments: Know your provider For payments to Indian providers, such as digital ad agencies or cloud service resellers: Section 194C applies to ad contracts; TDS at 2 per cent if the annual payment exceeds Rs 30,000. Section 194J applies to professional or technical services like AWS or Zoom; TDS at 10 per cent. Exemption: 'TDS isn't required if you aren't under tax audit or are a non-corporate entity,' notes Jain. For foreign providers, such as Google, Meta, or SaaS platforms: TDS under Section 195 applies, but rates vary depending on the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). You must also file Form 15CA/CB, even if TDS isn't deducted; failure attracts a penalty of Rs 1 lakh. Common mistakes to avoid According to Ritika Nayyar, partner at a law firm, Singhania & Co., many taxpayers: Wrongly assume no TDS is needed if the provider is foreign. Skip filing Form 15CA/CB if no TDS is deducted. Misapply DTAA benefits without obtaining a Tax Residency Certificate. Ignore changes in TDS law or documentation requirements. Selling online? Know your 1 per cent TDS rule Platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Zomato deduct 1 per cent TDS on seller earnings under Section 194-O. 'This amount reflects in your Form 26AS and can be claimed as a credit while filing returns,' says Nayyar, adding that, 'Maintaining accurate sales and TDS records is key.' Can small users avoid TDS? Yes, in many cases. If your turnover is below Rs 1 crore (business) or Rs 50 lakh (profession), you're generally not liable to deduct TDS. Also, individuals or HUFs paying for personal use are exempt from TDS obligations. But for international payments, no basic exemption exists, warns Jain. 'All such cases must be evaluated carefully, especially when claiming DTAA benefits.'
