Warning: Spoilers for Sunrise on the Reaping below.
For Hunger Games fans looking for an update on Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the odds are ever in their favor.
Because while Sunrise on the Reaping is set more than 25 years before the Katniss and Peeta lead a revolution—instead following their mentor Haymitch Abernathy during the second Quarter Quell—author Suzanne Collins still gives a glimpse at what the couple's life looks like in the epilogue, as they find their new normal following the events of the original book trilogy.
Over the course of nearly 400 pages in the prequel, Collins painstakingly lays out the horrors Haymitch endures, from becoming a tribute on his 16th birthday to the slaughter that follows. But the final monstrosity that Snow bestows upon him after he defies the odds and wins the Games is that he returns home just in time to be met with the shocking deaths of his family and girlfriend Lenore Dove.

But while it's the loss of his girlfriend that serves as the final blow that leads him to his drunken fate, Collins doesn't end on a bleak note. Instead, she offers a look into his future—one we've previously seen in Mockingjay: A life with Katniss and Peeta as his makeshift family.
Indeed, in the short epilogue, Collins returns to a post-revolution District 12. And, in it, she not only offers up a glimpse at how Katniss and Peeta's life together, but how despite his best efforts, Haymitch finally lets them all the way in, recounting life with his brother Sid and BFF Burdock Everdeen (who happens to be Katniss' dad), as well as his surprising bond in the arena with District 12 mean girl Maysilee Donner.
'I didn't want to have anything to do with their memorial book after the war,' Haymitch insists in the epilogue. 'What use? What point? To relive all the loss. But when Burdock's page came up, I had to mention him showing me the grave. And I felt compelled to tell then about Maysilee Donner, former owner of the mockingjay pin. And how Sid loved the stars.'
After Katniss and Peeta learn about Lenora Dove—how she cared for geese and that it was Katniss' late dad Burdock who helped Haymitch find her hidden grave—the young pair spring into action.
And in giving their former mentor his own flock of geese to look after, Katniss and Peeta give a piece of Haymitch's life with Lenora Dove back to him. 'Like the geese,' Haymitch says, 'we really did mate for life.'
Ultimately, Haymitch gains the clarity to realize the parallels between himself and Katniss: their stubborn disposition, the way their grief after losing nearly everyone manifested and how she finally achieved what he could not in leading a revolution.
'She's not an easy person; she's like me, Peeta always says. But she was smarter than me, or luckier,' Haymitch admits, adding that when it comes to the reaping, 'She's the one who kept that sun from rising.'

Eric Dane Debuted New Girlfriend Despite Marriage To Rebecca Gayheart

Since revealing his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis in April, Eric Dane has made it clear that his relationship with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, is his number one priority. ALS, which is sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease or motor neurone disease, impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing patients to gradually lose the ability to walk, speak, eat, and breathe on their own, while their thinking ability remains the same. There is currently no known cure for ALS, and the life expectancy after diagnosis usually ranges between three and five years, although some people live for decades. 'I mean, I really, at the end of the day, just, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can,' he told Diane Sawyer during an emotional segment on Good Morning America last week, in which he also broke down in tears while talking about Rebecca, whom he married in 2004. 'I talk to her every day,' he said. 'We have managed to become better friends and better parents. And she is probably my biggest champion, my most stalwart supporter, and I lean on her.' If you heard about these quotes, you may have also been a little confused when, just a few days later, Eric appeared to debut his relationship with filmmaker Janell Shirtcliff at the premiere of his new show, Countdown. Eric and Janell posed hand-in-hand on the red carpet on Wednesday, and a source told Entertainment Tonight that same day that they have been 'in an on-and-off relationship' for more than three years. 'Eric asked Janell to be there for him during this time, and she wanted to show up for him,' the insider added. You're probably wondering, 'Is this the same guy who was just talking about his wife on national TV?' Well, yes, you'd be correct. Eric and Rebecca are technically still married, although it sounds like their relationship has taken on a new form in the past few years. As previously mentioned, Eric and Rebecca tied the knot in 2004, had two kids, and stayed happily married until 2018, when Rebecca filed for divorce. Years passed, the divorce proceedings never moved forward, and, by 2023, people began to suspect the pair were getting back together. Fast forward to March this year, and Rebecca requested to dismiss her divorce filing after seven years. It was only a month later, in April, that Eric's ALS diagnosis was made public. While giving an update on their marriage during an interview with E! News around the same time, Rebecca clarified that they're still married and 'best of friends,' without suggesting that they're romantically involved. 'We are really close. We are great coparents. We really figured out the formula to staying a family, and I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it, and we are as well,' she said, before going into more detail. 'I think it's important to not look at a relationship that ends as a failure. It's just a season. It wasn't a failure. It was a huge success. We were married for, I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years and we had two beautiful kids so I think that's a successful relationship, and that's how we look at it.' The details are still a little fuzzy, but based on Rebecca's comments — and the fact that she recently referred to him as her "ex-husband" on IG — it sounds like she and Eric, though legally married, are not together romantically. As for Janell, it would make sense that she and Eric began dating a few years ago when he and Rebecca were separated, as per the ET reports. To make matters more confusing, Eric has also been rumored to be dating Priya Jain, with whom he's been photographed numerous times since they were first linked in November 2024. They were last seen looking cozy together a month ago, so not exactly clear what's going on here. Last Thursday, an anonymous source alleged to Page Six that Priya was 'blindsided' by Eric and Janell's red carpet debut. As always, we'll take the anonymous sourcing with a grain of salt. Needless to say, it sounds like a very complicated time. But we'll be sure to let you know if we get any updates.

JLab's new party speaker puts a light show in your pocket

JLab has announced a new Party line of wireless speakers that continues an industry trend of adding animated RGB lighting to anything that plays music. That even includes the new budget-minded JLab Pop Party speaker — which is small enough to squeeze into a pocket but still features customizable LEDs. The $19.99 Pop Party is the lightest and cheapest of the four new speakers, all of which are available now through JLab's online store. It delivers up to 5W of sound through a two-inch full-range driver that's paired with a matching two-inch passive woofer to boost the presence of lower frequencies. When not stuffed in your pocket it can be hung from a bag or strapped to the handlebars of a bike using a detachable loop, and its RGB lighting can be customized with animations, your favorite color, or to flash and pulse to match the beat of what you're playing. Battery life is claimed to be over eight hours of playtime, but that drops to over five hours when you're also using the RGB lighting. The Pop Party's IPX5 rating means splashes or rain won't hurt it, but the speaker won't survive a complete dunking. The other three speakers have a slightly improved IPX6 water-resistance rating, but they also can't be fully submerged. The larger $29.99 Go Party speaker doubles the Pop's sound output to 10W using a pair of two-inch full-range drivers and dual two-inch passive woofers while expanding battery life to up to 16 hours, or up to eight with lighting activated. It also adds speakerphone functionality using a built-in mic. The $69.99 JBuds Party speaker features the same number of drivers as the Go Party, but increases the size of the dual full-frequency drivers to 2.5-inches so they deliver 30W of sound with 12 hours of battery life, or up to 10 hours with lighting. As with the rest of JLab's new lineup, the JBuds speaker's sound profile can be adjusted using a mobile app, but it adds a media control knob and additional buttons on top for easier access to commonly used functions. The $149.99 Epic Party speaker is the most expensive model in JLab's new lineup by a long shot, but it boosts sound output to 100W in all directions using four 2.5-inch full-range drivers, a five-inch passive woofer, and a larger 5.25-inch subwoofer. The Epic offers the longest battery life of the new lineup with up to 16 hours of just sound, or up to 14 hours with the accompanying light show. All of JLab's new Party speakers include the ability to pair with a second speaker for a stereo sound experience, and using the company's 'LabSync technology,' up to 100 can be connected together with their sound and lighting effects synchronized to fill a larger space.

'We Are F**ked!: John Oliver Wades Through 'The S**t' We're Now 'Drowning In'

'Last Week Tonight' host John Oliver on Sunday sounded the alarm over the rapid rise of artificial intelligence-generated content that is increasingly appearing online. At one point, he summed it up: 'We are fucked!' Oliver explained how the explosion of new AI tools has made it easier than ever to produce so-called 'AI slop,' the low-quality music, images, videos and even news articles that are now dominating people's social media feeds. It's 'the newest iteration of spam' and is making some platforms 'unusable' because of their sheer volume, Oliver lamented. Many users don't realize the content isn't even real and 'bad actors' are also seizing on some of it, he added, pointing to when then-presidential candidate Donald Trump last year falsely dismissed photos of big crowds at a Kamala Harris campaing event as being AI-generated. 'We're going to be drowning in this shit for the foreseeable future,' Oliver warned. The comedian acknowledged there's no easy fix. AI models are often trained on the work of real-life creators, effectively ripping them off, he noted. He didn't offer a solution but did suggest 'a petty way' to seek revenge, by making genuine art by stealing from the slop.
