HP's new OmniBook 5 brings Snapdragon chips and a battery that won't quit

HP is giving its OmniBook 5 Series laptops a solid upgrade with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X and X Plus chips, bringing better battery life and performance to a more affordable price range.
Before, if you wanted a Snapdragon-powered HP laptop, you had to go for the pricier OmniBook X models, which start at around $1,000. Now, HP is opening the door for more budget-friendly options with the OmniBook 5 Series. The 14-inch model kicks off at $799 and the 16-inch version starts at $849 – both packing ARM processors that promise solid efficiency.
Windows on Arm is shaking up the PC scene by combining the familiar Windows experience with the energy-saving benefits of Arm processors. These chips, which have dominated smartphones for years, bring perks like longer battery life, always-on connectivity and better portability to laptops.
The 14-inch OmniBook 5 is thin (12.69 mm) and light (1.35 kg or 2.98 lbs.). | Image credit – HP While the OmniBook 5 may not match the raw power of the OmniBook X, it still comes loaded with Microsoft Copilot+ AI features like Recall, Click-to-Do and a smarter Windows Search experience. Wonder what these actually do?
Recall: Lets you quickly find and jump back to things you have seen on your PC before. It uses an explorable timeline to help you track down that content you remember but can't quite place.

Smarter Windows Search: This upgraded search on Windows 11 works a bit like Google Lens. It lets you find images, documents, videos and more using simple text queries – making it easier to locate what you need without digging around. HP also adds its own AI Companion that handles things like document analysis and PC performance tweaks right on the device.
The bigger 16-inch laptop, just like the smaller model, is available in only one color – Glacier Silver. | Image credit – HP The laptops rock a sharp 2K OLED display and boast an impressive 34-hour battery life, plus a quick recharge that gets you to 50% in just 30 minutes. HP is pitching these as perfect for students and families who want reliable performance that lasts days without slowing down, even unplugged.
And if one screen isn't enough, the OmniBook 5 can connect to a single 5K external monitor or two 4K displays for serious multitasking. For virtual calls, it features a 1080p IR camera with Audio Boost 2.0, which includes AI-powered noise removal to improve your sound quality.
Here is a quick look at the specs you get:
Up to 32 GB RAM
Up to 1 TB storage
Windows 11 right out of the box
Dual speakers
2 USB Type-C ports
1 USB Type-A port
Headphone/microphone combo jack
Bluetooth 5.3
Wi-Fi 6E
Lightweight aluminum body
65W fast charging The 14-inch OmniBook 5 will be available first on Amazon and Micro Center starting in June. By July, you can grab it from HP's site, Best Buy and Costco. The 16-inch model will hit shelves in July, too, available directly from HP and its retail partners. It is nice to see HP pushing AI-powered features down into more affordable laptops. Sure, some of the AI stuff feels a bit extra right now, but having the option to try it out is still a win. Plus, with Microsoft giving Windows 11 a serious boost – especially on Snapdragon-powered devices – HP's timing couldn't be better for attracting buyers looking for a more affordable laptop that still delivers.

Apple could buy Perplexity AI, internal sources say

According to Mark Gurman's internal sources, Apple's executives are discussing the possibility of acquiring Perplexity AI, an AI-powered web search engine that has gained traction in the last year or so. However, the discussions are at an early stage, and Apple's mergers and acquisitions chief is overseeing them, along with executives at Apple's AI department. So, it's too early to tell whether the two companies will reach a deal. In fact, when asked for a comment, a Perplexity spokesperson said they have no knowledge of any current or future discussions on the matter. Even if Apple decides to acquire Perplexity AI, it will have several hurdles to overcome. For instance, the company is currently valued at $14 billion, which would be its biggest investment to date. Also, Perplexity is already in advanced talks with Samsung to integrate some of its features into Samsung's ecosystem. Source

However, press the Recents tab and you'll notice how all of the calls have been moved inside rectangular fields with rounded corners. Previously, Recent Calls was just one long list of names and avatars. The dial pad is also unchanged except for the background which has rounded corners on the top of the pad. The suggested phone numbers above the pad are inside rectangular fields with rounded corners after the redesign arrives. With the redesign, Google added a shortcut that places you one tap away from making a video call to a particular contact or someone you've recently been in touch with. The Settings menu for the Google Phone app also features the containers that are prevalent all over the redesigned app. Current design for the Google Phone app. | Image credit-PhoneArena When you get an incoming call, you can swipe left to decline the call or swipe right to accept it. The picture of the caller or his profile icon will rotate inside a scallop-shaped design until you accept or decline the call. The circular buttons turn into pill-shaped buttons that change into rounded rectangles when pressed. The "end call" button now stands out more, is wider, and is more prominent. The redesign requires beta version 180 of the Google Phone app and while I am running that version of the Phone app on my Pixel 6 Pro, it is a server-side update and I was unable to get the new look to surface. It is a more modern design of an overlooked app and looks great. When it does appear on my Pixel 6 Pro , I will update this story. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! Apple is considering buying Perplexity AI

Should Apple buy Perplexity AI? Yes, it will help No, leave Perplexity AI alone Too late, doesn't matter Yes, it will help 0% No, leave Perplexity AI alone 0% Too late, doesn't matter 0% Receive the latest Apple news Subscribe By subscribing you agree to our terms and conditions and privacy policy This could help Apple Intelligence Apple Intelligence still isn't fully out across the company's devices. | Video credit — Apple Apple intelligence A force to be reckoned with Nothing is final yet, and whether Apple acquires Perplexity AI or not heavily depends on whether it is forced to break off its current agreement with Google. Google pays Apple $20 billion annually to remain the default search engine on the latter's internet browser Safari. The ongoing antitrust trial regarding this matter may see this arrangement dissolved, which will be a major blow to both such a thing happens, Perplexity AI can replace Google on Safari as an AI-powered search engine instead. Google shares fell when news about Apple's plans to acquire Perplexity AI were first reported by Bloomberg Of course, such an acquisition would be an undeniable boon for Apple's research and development of AI.— and the features it promised during WWDC 2024 — still remains incomplete. In particular, a smarter Siri digital assistant is nowhere to be found as of AI's talent could help Apple speed up its AI development and not get left behind. Apple's failures in AI have given its rivals, Samsung and Google, a clear victory. Consumers who care about AI on smartphones will, understandably, choose a Galaxy S25 or a Pixel 9 instead of an iPhone 16 . This is also why Apple is following Samsung's lead and is reportedly discussing bringing Google's flagship AI model Gemini to iPhone If Apple acquires Perplexity AI, it could once again become a force to be reckoned with. It will be able to resume its work on its upcoming smart home hub as well as smart AR glasses . Such an acquisition will be costly, but I think it would serve Apple for decades to come.
