Racine Theatre Guild warns ticket resellers hike up prices

Yahoo30-04-2025

The Brief
The Racine Theatre Guild is warning its audience against overpaying for tickets.
Tickets to its performance of "Legally Blonde: The Musical" are available on StubHub for $635 a seat. The Racine Theatre Guild's top ticket price is $22.
Contact 6 found other ticket reselling websites listing tickets for $119, $69 and $71.
RACINE, Wis. - Tickets are available online for hundreds of dollars. Not for Beyonce's global tour, but for the Racine Theatre Guild's upcoming show. With just weeks until opening night, the theater is warning its audience not to overpay for tickets.
Local perspective
The Racine Theatre Guild, a local nonprofit, knows how to pinch pennies. The people who build the theater's sets are volunteers. Its set pieces have been on stage before, just under a different coat of paint. Its costumes come from thrift stores or the costume stock at Union Grove High School. About 400 people volunteer at the theater every year. It's all part of the theater's commitment to keeping its ticket prices affordable.

"We try to reuse to save money," said Joycelyn Fish, Racine Theatre Guild's director of marketing and development. "We want people to feel like this is a place they can come. They can afford to come here. They can bring the whole family."
By the numbers
The Racine Theatre Guild's top ticket price is $22. However, Fish was shocked to learn that tickets for its upcoming performance of "Legally Blonde: The Musical" are available on StubHub for $635 a seat.
"That's astronomically expensive," said Fish.

Contact 6 found tickets for the same Legally Blonde shows on other ticket reselling platforms, too, listed for $119, $69 and $71. Tickets are still available through the Racine Theatre Guild's website for a fraction of the cost.
"None of it is illegal," said Fish. "It is all totally valid and these people can just price gouge and swindle people out of their money," said Fish.
The other side
StubHub doesn't control the prices on its website. Its users can list whatever price they choose when reselling tickets. That doesn't mean someone will actually buy them.
A StubHub spokesperson told Contact 6: "StubHub is a trusted resale platform where fans can buy and sell tickets safely and securely, with every purchase backed by our FanProtect Guarantee."
What they're saying
Alex Milovic, an associate professor in Marquette University's marketing department, said it's up to the ticket buyer to shop around.
"There are laws around scalping tickets on premises, things around having to show the face value of your ticket. Otherwise, it really is, kind of, you're on your own," said Milovic. "It's really up to the consumer to say, 'How much is too much?'"
Dig deeper
The Racine Theatre Guild told Contact 6 this is an ongoing program. Recently, it became aware of four people who spent more than $100 a seat to see its Christmas show.
"There's no way for me to report (the prices) as fraudulent," said Fish. "There's no way for me to have them take it down."
Fish asked StubHub customer service to remove the "Legally Blonde" tickets. It didn't.
"It's really on us to try and educate the public," said Fish. "We want to protect our patrons."
Contact 6 didn't hear back from the other ticket reselling websites with prices listed well-above $22.
What you can do
To avoid being overcharged on any ticket, go to a venue's website first. Buying directly from a venue can also save you dozens, even hundreds of dollars in extra fees.

Information for this report comes from Joycelyn Fish, Alex Milovic and Contact 6 research into online ticket resellers.

Selena Gomez Catches Heat for 'Rich Person' Behavior After Recent Photo Enraged Fans

is rubbing some fans the wrong way after sharing a seemingly harmless photo from a recent concert she attended. The Disney channel alum is facing criticism after she admitted to watching a New York Knicks basketball game on her phone while attending a concert stop along Beyonce's Cowboy Carter tour. After posting a photo via Instagram Stories of her mobile device situated up on the glass of what looked to be box seating at the highly-anticipated concert series, Reddit users had a field day with the snap, calling the actress' move "rich person" behavior. "Still got my eye on the game," text over the picture read, with the music event taking place at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium down below. The image sparked debates across the internet, with people taking to the sharing platform to express their opinions about celebrity behavior and concert etiquette. Several conveyed disappointment over Gomez's apparent lack of engagement. "Not surprised. Rich people can't appreciate things because they've destroyed the pleasure center of their brain from getting what they want all the time. Selena will never know an Ounce of the happiness I felt in the cheap seats," one top comment read. Another echoed that sentiment, chiming in with, "GIRL…….. and all those empty seats! What a waste. Rich people are sf annoying," in part. On the other hand, many understood the need to be tapped into both events at once. "I live in NYC and plenty of my friends who went to the Cowboy Carter show last night also had the game on their phones… I'm not a basketball fan but apparently it's been a big deal 🤷‍♀️," someone reasoned. "Would that be me at a Beyonce concert, absolutely not! But this is a nothing burger tbh…she likes Bey and she likes basketball, she wouldn't be there if she didn't want to 😭," another candidly pointed out, as another said, "Can't blame her. Knicks pacers series 🔥." An additional Reddit user added, "Not to mention that it was a huge playoff game. I can't blame her for keeping up with it while at a concert. I would absolutely do the same thing." Amid all the online chatter, it should be noted that the Only Murders in the Building star has been a regular at Knicks games, often attending with her fiancé, Benny Blanco. The couple was recently spotted courtside at Madison Square Garden, displaying no shortage of PDA and enjoying the sporting event together. The New York Knicks are currently facing off against the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals—the team's first time making it this far since 1999. Gemini on Android can now identify songs — but there's a catch

Just days after launching 'Search Live,' Google continues to evolve Gemini into a solid AI Assistant on Android, with the latest update bringing a long-missing fan favorite: song identification. You can now ask Gemini, 'What song is this?' and the chatbot will trigger Google's Song Search interface, the same listening tool familiar to Assistant users. It can recognize music from your environment, a playlist or even if you hum the tune yourself. I'm curious to test just how accurate the humming needs to be. Song Search isn't fully native to Gemini yet. When you ask for song identification, it launches a full-screen listening interface from the Google app (not directly inside Gemini), The song identification update works in the Gemini app on Android, but when you type (or speak) "What song is this?" it kicks you into the Google app's Song Search interface, virtually handing off to the Google app, which feels a bit clunky compared to the way Pixel's Now Playing Assistant handles fairly well. It also doesn't stay inside Gemini Live's conversational experience, which also feels like a miss. And, once it finds a match, the result appears in Google Search, not as an inline Gemini response. For now, this feature works only on Android; there's no Gemini song identification on iOS yet. You'll also need to manually restart the full-screen Song Search interface if you want to identify multiple songs in a row. In terms of comparison, Google Assistant's built-in Now Playing feature is still more seamless. You can trigger it with a voice command or lock screen shortcut, and it shows results inline (often with album art) and even works offline. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In contrast, Gemini's new Song Search relies on the Google app's listening interface. You need to type or say 'What song is this?' in Gemini, which then opens a full-screen search window and hands off the result to the Google app. It's accurate, pulling from the same song database as Assistant, but the experience is naturally less smooth, since it requires switching apps and doesn't stay inside Gemini itself. Another key difference: while Google Assistant's Now Playing is available on most Android devices and pre-installed on Pixel, Gemini's Song Search is Android-only for now, and it's not yet available on iOS. Yes, Gemini can now identify songs, but it's not yet as smooth as Google Assistant or Pixel's Now Playing feature. Still, if you're using Gemini daily, this brings back a key Assistant-era capability, which is a good sign that Google is listening to user feedback as Gemini evolves into a more complete voice assistant.
