‘Day of the Jackal' author Frederick Forsyth dies at 86
Frederick Forsyth, the British author of 'The Day of the Jackal' and other bestselling thrillers, has died after a brief illness, his literary agent said Monday. He was 86.
Jonathan Lloyd, his agent, said Forsyth died at home early Monday surrounded by his family.
'We mourn the passing of one of the world's greatest thriller writers,' Lloyd said.
Born in Kent, in southern England, in 1938, Forsyth served as a Royal Air Force pilot before becoming a foreign correspondent. He covered the attempted assassination of French President Charles de Gaulle in 1962, which provided inspiration for 'The Day of the Jackal,' his bestselling political thriller about a professional assassin.
Published in 1971, the book propelled him into global fame. It was made into a film in 1973 starring Edward Fox as the Jackal and more recently a television series starring Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch.
In 2015, Forsyth told the BBC that he had also worked for the British intelligence agency MI6 for many years, starting from when he covered a civil war in Nigeria in the 1960s.
Although Forsyth said he did other jobs for the agency, he said he was not paid for his services and 'it was hard to say no' to officials seeking information.
'The zeitgeist was different,' he told the BBC. 'The Cold War was very much on.'
He wrote more than 25 books including 'The Afghan,' 'The Kill List,' 'The Dogs of War' and 'The Fist of God' that have sold over 75 million copies, Lloyd said.
His publisher, Bill Scott-Kerr, said that 'Revenge of Odessa,' a sequel to the 1974 book 'The Odessa File' that Forsyth worked on with fellow thriller author Tony Kent, will be published in August.
'Still read by millions across the world, Freddie's thrillers define the genre and are still the benchmark to which contemporary writers aspire,' Scott-Kerr said.

The police force announced the death today and said it is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious and the coroner has been informed. Prince of Wales celebrates 43rd birthday with new puppy picture
The Prince of Wales has marked his 43rd birthday in a picture with his dog Orla and three of her puppies. The photograph, taken by the Princess of Wales, was shared by Kensington Palace on William's birthday on Saturday, with the caption: 'Happy birthday! Love C, G, C, L, Orla and the puppies!' One of the chocolate cocker spaniel puppies is being stroked by the Prince of Wales while their mother Orla is behind him. The Prince and Princess of Wales have had Orla since 2020, after their first dog together Lupo, also a cocker spaniel – which they were given as a wedding present from Kate's brother James Middleton – died unexpectedly. The King and Queen were back at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday and watched the races from the royal box, while Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank were spotted in the parade ring. On Thursday, the Prince of Wales was in Norwich with Earthshot Prize council member Cate Blanchett to see the hi-tech work of one of the 2023 prize finalists. Is there a post credit scene in 28 Years Later?
The newest sequel in the 28 Days Later franchise hit theaters on Friday, with audiences heading to see what the rage virus had done to the United Kingdom in the nearly three decades since it began. The story picks up with Spike (Alfie Williams) and his dad (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) heading onto the mainland from the safety of their island refuge for a coming-of-age hunting trip. Warning: Spoilers for follow! Eventually Spike and his mother Isla (the wonderful Jodie Comer) go on a search for a doctor (Ralph Fiennes) that can hopefully help her migraines and bouts of confusion. They, of course, run into a lot of trouble with hordes of infected and a particularly difficult Alpha (the more evolved and stronger infected). After finding Dr. Kelson, Spike has to come to grips with grief and death in a new way, and he decides to stay out on the mainland to learn more about himself. So, is there a post-credit scene in 28 Years Later? The short answer is no, you can leave when the credits start to roll. The longer answer is that there should have been one. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland ended the movie with a bizarre scene that involves track-suited, karate fighting killers in blond wigs, led by ringleader Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell). It's a deep cut reference to disgraced British television host Jimmy Savile, but it's also a drastic tonal shift from the rest of the movie. The newest movie is actually the launching point for a hopeful new trilogy, starting with 28 Years Later and continuing with the January 2026 release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Since the final scene seems to be more of a lead-in to that follow up film, it would have been less of a vibe shift had it followed a wave of credits.
