Government scheme helps boy from Virudhunagar get admission to NIT Rourkela

Efforts of the Virudhunagar district administration in identifying the best-performing students and giving them focussed training has helped another government school student from an economically weaker background get admission into a premier national educational institution.
M. Ajay Kumar, a student of Government Higher Secondary School, Ilupaiyur has benefited under the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme and has got admission for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela.
The son of a truck driver, Ajay Kumar, was identified for the programme by his school Headmistress, Parameswari. 'It was the Headmistress who encouraged me to set my goals higher. I only followed her advice,' said Ajay Kumar. He was motivated when the district Collector V.P. Jeyaseelan gave a pep talk to select students at one of the Coffee with Collector programmes, said Kumar.
Expert guidance and support provided
Kumar said that he was given coaching and reading materials for the JEE Mains. Eventually, he cleared the exam and got admitted into NIT-Rourkela. 'My teachers helped me to select the courses,' he added. All his educational expenses will be taken care of by the Tamil Nadu government.
'We selected the best-performing students under each reservation category, such as Scheduled Tribes and persons with disabilities, and provided them with focused online training, expert-guided application and choice filling support through our dedicated control room,' Mr. Jeyaseelan said.
Out of the 230 students trained, around 30 have cleared the exams and are expected to get admissions from premier Central institutes such as the IITs and the Institute of Fashion Technology, the Collector added.
Logeshwari Selvam, a student from Government higher Secondary School in Padanthal, who had received training through the Naan Mudhalvan scheme, also got admission for Aerospace Engineering in IIT Bombay.

14 Virudhunagar students crack national entrance exams

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Around 14 students from the district government and government model schools have successfully cleared national-level entrance exams and secured admissions in some of the country's top universities, including IIT, NIT, and IHM. M Ajay Kumar, whose father is a driver and mother a homemaker, cleared JEE and secured admission at NIT, Rourkela, to study Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Ajay said he was initially unaware of such entrance exams, and had planned to join a local engineering college after finishing Class 12. It was his headmistress, Parameswari, who recognised his potential and told him about his opportunity. Ajay, who completed his schooling at the Government Higher Secondary school in Illupaiyur, Tiruchuli, said, "I was able to concentrate on my studies because all the necessary materials and guidance were provided to me. I was even sent to Erode for coaching. Although I studied in the Tamil medium all these years, I could easily follow the coaching as the teachers taught us in Tamil as well. Officials from the education department said that the district administration has set up a control room to address the students' grievances and facilitate the application process. Century-old school struggles without permanent teachers despite good admissions

1 2 Mangaluru: The plight of the century-old Tenkayedapadavu Higher Primary School is different from that of usual govt schools in the district. Despite seeing good admissions, the school lacks permanent teachers. The aided school has been functioning without permanent teachers for the last two academic years. After the retirement of the headmaster, Krishna Naik, in May 2022, the govt did not appoint any teachers here, making it a teacher-less school since then. Currently, it is managed by guest teachers appointed by the SDMC and one through the Jnana Deepa programme. Prasad Kumar M, an SDMC member of the school, shared that the school will complete 100 years in 2026. In the past, the school had a total of over 500 students, which has now reduced to 54, studying from Class I to Class VII. "However, despite having a substantial number of admissions, the education department is unwilling to provide us with one or two permanent teachers. Due to competition from English medium and private schools, the number of students has been declining year by year. In 2023-24, the number of students was 62, in 2024-25 it was 57, and in 2025-26 it was 54. "We have reached out to our MLA, DDPI, and BEO in the past, but no positive response was received. This academic year, we are again trying our luck to get a permanent teacher and save this school from closure. There is hope for more admissions if the govt appoints permanent teachers," said Kumar, adding that they have plans to open a kindergarten. With no permanent teachers, the school is managed by three guest teachers. With the cooperation of the SDMC and parents, two guest teachers have been working since 2018-19. They are paid by the SDMC, where money is collected from parents and locals. One teacher has been working under the 'Jnana Deepa' project of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP). "Whenever we approached govt officials, they stated that according to govt education policy, it does not appoint guest teachers for aided schools," said Kumar, demanding that aided schools too need to survive.
