Slave contracts, plastic surgeries, and more — Fans call for boycott of 'Lee Soo Man: The King of K-Pop' documentary

Time of India30-04-2025

Shocking one and all, Prime Video released the trailer of their upcoming documentary titled, Lee Soo Man: The King of K-Pop, produced by This Machine. At its core is Lee Soo Man, the founder of the K-pop agency SM Entertainment, whose vision and influence helped lay the foundation for the global K-pop wave.
The documentary charts Lee's decades-long journey: from building an entertainment giant to launching some of the biggest idol groups in K-pop history namely EXO, aespa, Red Velvet and more. But it doesn't stop at the glossy surface — the film also explores the highs, the lows, and the power struggles within the company.

Fans call for boycott
Using rare footage and behind-the-scenes clips, The King of K-Pop is said to offer an unfiltered look at the intense world of idol training, choreography, and music video production.
However, many K-pop fans remain unimpressed, pointing out that SM Entertainment has long been mired in controversies — from contractual disputes with artists and tax evasion to allegedly pressuring idols into plastic surgery to meet Korean beauty standards.
Many took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to call for a boycott of the documentary, claiming that several of their favorite idols suffered under the agency's control.
One said, "Imagine calling this tax evading, plastic surgery pushing, blood obsessed, minor abusing, law manipulating slimeball the king of anything
."

Another wrote, "We ask that you not support this documentary due to the lack of respect shown by the filmmakers in using photos of Jonghyun's funeral alongside the phrase 'the dark side of K-pop.' Reducing Jonghyun to that phrase and using such sensitive images is truly disrespectful."

One added, "Oh right, the man behind slave contracts, whose agency has faced multiple lawsuits, who blacklisted anyone who dared to fight for their rights, and whose agency has repeatedly abused its Chinese idols for decades."

Another stated, "Reducing Jonghyun—his art, his life—to a mere footnote in some twisted narrative about 'K-pop's dark side' to make LSM look better is disgusting. It's vile. Using videos from his funeral to serve that agenda? That's not just insensitive, it's exploitative and absolutely sickening."

More about Lee Soo Man and SM Entertainment
Lee Soo Man was officially ousted from his position at SM Entertainment through a gradual process that began in October 2022.
As one of the most influential agencies in K-pop, SM Entertainment launched and managed top acts such as EXO, aespa, Red Velvet, NCT, Girls' Generation, Kangta, BoA, TVXQ, Super Junior, SHINee, RIIZE, Lucas, Naevis, and Hearts2Hearts.
The documentary is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 13. It will also feature interviews with notable artists like EXO's Suho, NCT 127's Taeyong, and members of aespa, who reflect on their personal journeys in the industry.

Dharmendra On Importance Of Yoga: 'People Call Me Old, I Am Still Young'

Last Updated: Dharmendra mentioned that yoga is not just an exercise but also helps in overcoming various health issues. On the occasion of the International Day of Yoga, veteran actor Dharmendra opened up about the significance of yoga. In a recent interview, the Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani actor credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for championing yoga worldwide. 'I think Modi ji started it, and before that, Ramdev ji also began this movement. Many people from other countries wanted to patent it, but it didn't happen. This is our civilisation, our culture, which has been going on for centuries. And it is necessary," Dharmendra told the news agency ANI. The actor mentioned that yoga is not just an exercise but also helps in overcoming various health issues. 'Yoga can cure many diseases. If you have breathing problems, remember that health is wealth," he said. The 89-year-old actor further gave a befitting reply to all those who call him old and said, 'Many people call me old, but I am still young." 'I used to dream of working hard and cycling. I would see my reflection in film posters and ask myself, 'What am I going to achieve?' I used to wake up at night and dream, and when I woke up in the morning, I would ask the mirror," he shared. Meanwhile, on the work front, Dharmendra was last seen in Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon's Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. ‘Bollywood and India inspire me': French designer Mossi Traoré

Mossi Traoré, the famous French fashion designer, believes in the idea of 'everyday couture". Each of his ready-to-wear creations, whether a blouse or a dress, come sublimated with couture detailing, be it the draping, the embroidery or the fabric. It's an idea that the designer, who launched his Mossi label in 2017, is promoting through his fashion school, Les Ateliers d'Alix, as well. Traoré opened the school in 2015 as a way to empower the underprivileged, enabling students to master rarefied haute couture skills. It's located in Hautes-Noues, an impoverished Parisian suburb where Traoré grew up. He was recently in India as part of the Ashoka University's Lodha Genius Programme, an initiative that brings global changemakers to the campus to inspire young minds. Also read: How to elevate your office look with the necktie In an interview with Lounge, Traoré talks about how India inspires his work, following eco-friendly practices while designing and the future of fashion. Edited excerpts: At the Parisian school Mod'Art International, you learnt how to make clothes with an Indian seamstress and an African maker. How did the experience shape? These experiences have been very formative and have been part of my apprenticeship. They have reinforced my determination and my choice to be a designer open to the world and to the diversity of cultures. India and Africa are among the cultures that are very dear to my heart. In 2015, you founded your own school, Les Ateliers d'Alix, a name that pays homage to French couturier Madame Grès… Madame Grès and Yohji Yamamoto are my two greatest sources of inspiration in fashion. Madame Grès made me love couture excellence. Fashion is an art, and Madame Grès is its mirror. Rigour, passion, the quest for eternal perfection—that's what Madame Grès inspires in me. You launched your own eponymous brand Mossi, in 2017. Do you see fashion as an applied art form? Art is a tree with many branches, and I've grabbed the fashion one while having fun with the others. My work revolves around four words: fashion, art, crafts and the world. Your school signed a partnership with Chanel last year. Would you consider it a key milestone? Yes, this is a very important step, because it shows today that one of the biggest haute couture houses was sensitive to the quality of our training, but above all to the technical skills of our students to meet their needs and those of the industry. You won the Pierre Bergé Prize in 2020, and you presented your collection as an artistic performance with dancers, one of your biggest inspirations… I love movement, which translates into many artistic currents and forms, including dance, which is one of my favorite artistic mediums. Which artists inspire you the most? Korean artist Lee Bul is my fountain of inspiration. I'm also fond of the Korean artist Lee Bae for his world and his artistic expression. Calligrapher Hassan Massoudy and his art of movement. The textile sculptor Simone Pheulpin, the talented Ibrahim Ballo fascinate me. And above all, Bollywood actors. Has India ever inspired your moodboard? India has always inspired me and will always inspire me. Your advice to young designers? Not to be afraid to be curious, and to encourage collaborations that unite people around values they can relate to themselves. How challenging is it for a young creative to start a label in today's challenging times? The context is not the most favourable: competition is fierce and the sector is less dynamic. Without substantial resources, it's very difficult to survive in this industry. However, the fashion sector has its doubts, and needs to reinvent itself in certain areas—and that's an excellent opportunity for the new generation to come up with new ideas. You've always rooted for social justice and sustainability through your work… I believe that fashion can contribute to providing solutions to make our world a better place. I want to embody fashion that has a positive social impact on the public and on local areas. Two great social entrepreneurs, Ali Benat and Leila Janah, who are of Indian origin, have confirmed me on this path. Can fashion ever be sustainable? It must try to be.
