
Samsung Gave Me an Inside Look at Its Plan to Help Us Age Better (One Galaxy Watch at a Time)
Samsung is pushing its Galaxy Watch beyond everyday health and fitness tracking and into the realm of preventive care with personalized wellness coaching and a new blood analysis feature that aims to help people fend off disease and support healthier aging. I spoke with Dr. Hon Pak, Samsung's senior vice president and head of digital health, to get a closer look at what's coming to the Galaxy Watch and how it could change how we think about wearables.
"There's illness, there's cancer, and so many other conditions that are actually preventable," Pak told CNET. "We know those behaviors are important, but in our busy lives, it's often hard to keep them up. At Samsung, our mission is to meet people where they are and help support those healthy behaviors in a meaningful way."
The new tools are expected to debut alongside the next Galaxy Watch in July and include a noninvasive blood test that measures antioxidant levels (or carotenoids), a cardiovascular health assessment, personalized sleep coaching and an AI-powered run assessment with live feedback to help you train smarter.
"What we really think we can do is bring this data about sleep, nutrition, activity and stress, and really contextualize it for the user," Pak said.
At a time when there are a dizzying number of smartwatches and wearables available for consumers to choose from, Samsung aims to stand out by evolving its Galaxy Watch from a passive tracking device into a proactive health monitor. The goal is to help people take control of their health and keep them on track long-term. With more than 68 million people worldwide on Samsung Health, the company hopes to bridge the gap between that brief snapshot of data collected at the doctor's office and the continuous health data collected by wearables that can help paint a more complete picture of your health.

Antioxidant detection, no needle needed
Beta-carotene is just one example of the many naturally occurring carotenoids, or antioxidants found in vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes that can help neutralize toxins (free radicals) in the body, according to National Institute of Health. These toxins -- typically caused by stress, poor diet, smoking and aging -- can build up over time and contribute to serious health problems like cancer, heart disease and premature aging. Currently, one of the most common ways to detect carotenoid levels is through a lab test by having your blood drawn.
With a new feature called the Antioxidant Index, the next Galaxy Watch will be able to measure carotenoid levels in the skin instantly without needles or lab work. Instead, you place your thumb on the back of the watch sensor for a few seconds.
"This is a non-invasive way to see how your diet and lifestyle may be affecting your antioxidant levels," Pak said. "We use LED light sensors measuring four different wavelengths to detect beta-carotene in the skin. And we've validated the readings [from the Galaxy Watch] against levels in the blood,"
On the Galaxy Watch, people will receive a score from "low" to "adequate," with some general guidance on habits to improve antioxidant levels. Longer-term, Samsung is working on more targeted AI-driven recommendations tied to specific recipes, supplements, and nutrition plans.
"If your levels are low, we might suggest more leafy greens or sweet potatoes," Pak said. "Eventually, we want to tie this to personalized recommendations through nutrition coaching and recipe suggestions."

Samsung is also debuting a 12-minute run test to help Galaxy Watch owners establish a baseline fitness level, ranging from beginner (level one) to marathon-ready (level 10). Once the assessment is complete, the watch will generate a personalized training plan to help people reach specific distance goals, like running a 10K or half marathon.
You'll also get real-time encouragement from an AI coach on the watch to help push you through a run, similar to Apple's new Workout Buddy feature on the Apple Watch. Samsung's AI coach will give guidance verbally like "push a little harder" or "ease up," as well as adapt plans for future workouts based on your performance. As users progress, they'll unlock new training challenges, making the program dynamic and goal-driven.
It'll also help you put the training into context by showing you how it's affecting other health indicators already on the watch, like VO2 max, a key indicator of overall fitness. Eventually, these health indicators could be used as training targets instead of just distance goals to map out a training plan.
"As we target more athletes clearly, that's going to be something people are going to want to do," Pak said. "That's a teaser for what's to come."
The Bedtime Guidance feature on the watch gives you an optimal sleep and wake window that takes into account your individual circadian rhythm and sleep debt.

Sleep is another core puzzle piece in Samsung's holistic approach to preventive care, and a major indicator of overall health, Pak said. Poor sleep has been linked to serious long-term risks like dementia, cardiovascular disease and obesity.
"A lot of body repair happens during sleep, both physical and mental," he said.
A new feature called Bedtime Guidance builds on the Galaxy Watch's existing sleep tracking tools, like sleep stage analysis and sleep apnea detection, by offering personalized recommendations for optimal sleep and wake times. It starts with a three-day analysis of your sleep habits to determine your unique circadian rhythm and sleep pressure (also known as sleep debt). From there, the watch provides tailored advice to help improve metrics like total sleep time and energy score based on your own sleep data.
Rather than simply sending a generic reminder to get 8 hours of sleep, Bedtime Guidance recommends a personalized sleep and wake window. The goal is to help you recover from nights of poor or irregular sleep and improve alertness during the day. So, for example, if you were jet-lagged, this feature could (in theory) help reduce your sleep debt and get your sleep schedule back on track faster.
The Galaxy Watch also takes a more nuanced approach to coaching by factoring in real-world inputs collected by the watch, your Galaxy phone, and other Samsung devices when available. For example, it may suggest improving your sleep environment by lowering the thermostat or making the room darker.
"We have SmartThings connected with Samsung, so it can control your environment, things like humidity, temperature, lighting, or even automatically closing the blinds. We also have medical features, like sleep detection. After just a couple of nights, we may be able to detect signs of sleep apnea and suggest that you seek medical care," Pak said.

Another new metric is Vascular Load, which reflects the cumulative stress on your heart and vascular system while sleeping; stress that ideally should decrease overnight. Pak said the Galaxy Watch uses pulse wave analysis and optical sensors to track trends in arterial stiffness and overall cardiovascular strain. These readings are translated into a low-to-high scale to help you understand how behaviors (like sodium or alcohol intake) may be contributing to long-term heart disease risk.
"Things like poor sleep, a bad diet or chronic stress can elevate your vascular load," Pak said. "This is one way we're trying to make those connections visible in a meaningful, measurable way."
The features will be available on newer watches like the Galaxy Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch 7, but vary depending on the types of sensors available.

Who gets these features, and how much will they cost?
The new features are part of the One UI 8 Watch, which will be available on the newest Galaxy Watch series starting this month, through a beta program (currently limited to customers in the US and South Korea with a Galaxy Watch 5 or newer). Vascular Load and Antioxidant Index are being introduced as Labs features, which means they're considered experimental and available for early preview before their official release.
All of these features are expected to make their official debut with the next Galaxy Watch, which we're expecting to come in July. The availability of each specific feature will depend mostly on whether your Galaxy Watch has the advanced LED sensors necessary to power them. Vascular Load and Antioxidant Index, for example, will be available only on the Galaxy Watch Ultra and later, while the Running Coach feature will require the Galaxy Watch 7 or later.
Pricing is also still up in the air. During our interview, the company said it's exploring a premium subscription model similar to Fitbit Premium or Garmin's new Connect Plus that requires a monthly subscription to unlock advanced coaching features. Ideally, the features would be included free with the new watch, while older models could access them behind a paywall. We'll update this article as soon as Samsung shares more details on model eligibility and pricing.

Samsung's future health plans
Optically based glucose measurement may not be too far off, Pak suggested. As Samsung continues to explore noninvasive medical testing, it's clear the company sees wearables playing a growing role in day-to-day health tracking and as preventive care. Samsung's goal is to make clinical-level insights accessible at home and turn wearable data into actionable guidance before a problem becomes serious.
"We believe wellness isn't just one thing," Pak said. "It's activity, nutrition, mental health, and sleep combined."
Whether it all works as intended (and whether people actually stick with it) will depend on Samsung's execution. But one thing is clear, Samsung is making a serious play to turn your wrist into a true health hub.

These may be the 3 most effective non-drug ways to treat knee arthritis
A knee brace appears to be one of the more effective ways to treat the pain - as well as improve function and stiffness - from osteoarthritis, the common degenerative process where the cartilage cushioning the joint deteriorates over time. Researchers in China ranked the relative effectiveness of a dozen treatments, ranging from laser and ultrasound therapy to wedged insoles and kinesiology tape, studied in 139 randomized controlled trials. Subscribe to The Post Most newsletter for the most important and interesting stories from The Washington Post. Based on the results from 9,644 participants, the simple knee brace ranked highest in effectiveness to alleviate symptoms of arthritis, the researchers concluded. However, 'the challenge,' said Prakash Jayabalan, the director of musculoskeletal research at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago, 'is getting patients to actually wear knee braces.' Jayabalan and other clinicians who weren't involved in the study said knee braces can provide certain people immediate relief by supporting the load on the joint. But, some patients find braces uncomfortable to wear. Hydrotherapy and exercises such as weightlifting and yoga placed second and third in the meta-analysis ranking. Hydrotherapy, also known as water exercises or aquatherapy, is a treatment approach designed to improve symptoms. And experts said staying active and maintaining a healthy weight are the most effective ways to relieve symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. 'Both of those can improve symptoms and slow the progression of arthritis,' said Morgan Jones, a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon at Mass General Brigham. The peer-reviewed study published in PLOS One on Wednesday. It was led by Yuan Luo, a researcher in the department of rehabilitation at the First People's Hospital of Neijiang, China, who did not respond to questions by the time of publication. - - - What causes knee osteoarthritis? When cartilage in the knee breaks down, the joint is left with 'bone on bone motion,' Jayabalan said. Cartilage can't repair itself like other tissues in the body and, oftentimes, people don't know they've lost the cartilage in their knee until it's gone, he said. There are two common risk factors for knee arthritis - a previous knee injury such as an ACL tear and unhealthy weight gain, said Steve Messier, the director of the J.B. Snow Biomechanics Laboratory at Wake Forest University. Every pound of additional body weight amounts to four pounds of stress on the knees when a person is walking, Messier said. Once someone has arthritis in their knee, they need to make broad lifestyle changes with regular exercise to manage the pain, he said. 'It really doesn't matter what type of exercise you do, just so you're being active,' Messier said. 'They all will reduce pain.' Other clinicians agree staying active is one of the best ways to relieve knee arthritis pain. It's the first recommendation in guidelines published in 2019 from the Osteoarthritis Research Society International. Around 33 million U.S. adults have osteoarthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People commonly take NSAIDs such as ibuprofen to relieve the symptoms. But, these pain-relievers can damage the lining of your gut. Jayabalan said he recommends people use NSAIDs for no more than 10 days when they're experiencing 'debilitating pain' that is impacting their function. 'You should not be taking these every day,' he said. Knee replacements have long been the gold standard for damaged joints, but it can take up to a year for some people to fully recover from surgery. Emerging alternatives target the nerves to stop the knee pain and block blood flow to reduce inflammation. 'Two people can have the same amount of structural damage in their knee and have totally different pain profiles,' said Jones, also an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. 'The decision for knee replacement ends up being really individualized, and the focus is on the person's symptoms.' - - - What did the study find? The knee brace ranked best on various scores of pain, stiffness and function, and had the 'highest probability of being the best technique,' the researchers wrote. Jones said a knee brace can be 'very effective' in people who have arthritis in certain compartments of the knee because the brace can shift the load to another part of the joint. 'But, if somebody has arthritis throughout their knee, an unloader brace is not as likely to be helpful,' he said. 'They don't have a more-normal area to off-load the force to.' The researchers compared a dozen interventions: low-level laser therapy, high-intensity laser therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, interferential current, short wave diathermy, ultrasound, lateral wedged insole, knee brace, exercise, hydrotherapy, kinesio taping and extracorporeal shock wave therapy. Hydrotherapy ranked second in some scores. Water buoyancy takes pressure off the knee joints and helps improve range of motion for some people, Jayabalan said. Ultrasound pulse therapy to treat knee arthritis 'remains contentious' and performed the worst across multiple scores, the researchers wrote. And, they concluded that wedged insoles, which attempt to shift the load on the knee by lifting one side of the foot, did not 'outperform neutral devices in pain reduction.' Insoles used to be a popular therapy for knee osteoarthritis but 'multiple studies' have shown they don't help, Jones said. - - - The study's limitations Many of the studies in the meta-analysis are short, six to 12 weeks, Messier said. Therefore, the results support only short-term pain relief from these treatments. 'It may relieve pain for a little while, but it's not going to change pain in the long run,' Messier said. 'The most effective thing they have here is exercise.' Jayabalan said none of the studies are looking at whether the treatments led to mechanistic improvements in the knee - 'they were not regrowing cartilage, or something like that.' Instead, the studies recorded clinical observations that these treatments may provide a potential benefit. And, many of the randomized controlled trials were conducted on small groups of participants, Jones said. 'There's a lot of variability in the studies and how long they follow their patients,' he said. For more, let's welcome in Arta Rawi America's industry markets leader and Health Sciences and wellness, as well as Yahoo Finance's very own Anjali Camlani. Welcome to you both. All right, I'll start with you. Uh, maybe it's just a big question, big picture question. Does the US have the investment power, in your opinion, to overtake China in biotech? Yeah, thanks for having me. Uh, the biotech is the innovation feeder to the big pharmaceuticals and it only uh nurtures well in an ecosystem. So to answer your question, what do you need in that ecosystem for that to nurture? Uh, investment capacity, which we have been having for the last, you know, decades, if you will, to kind of keep investing in that innovation to move on. NIH has been probably the world's largest VC over $40 billion in non-dilute funding into the entrepreneurial startups. Then you have talent who has been, you know, coming all these top universities and MDs and PhDs who are dedicated to advance it. And then you need this technology transfer system so that those intellectual property translate into a startup. And then with that investment capacity, it keeps growing and then through testing and going to the humans and then ultimately being developed for everyone's use. So, uh, yes, the US still has the capacity to invest, but it is not potentially the only game in town given the development coming from China. I'm curious, Arta, because we know, I know you've been tracking the deals and uh, we've seen the number of deals steadily increasing over the years. I saw, uh, one of the ones that you sent, which looks at the number of deals so far to date for 2025 is more than half of what we saw in 2024. So we can expect that to really outpace 2024. What does that mean though? Because I know that some of the deals that are happening are more, um, what you would call licensing deals, right? It's not necessarily that this money is going to from scratch investment and innovation, but it's more stuff that has already happened and is built up. Talk to me about that and why that matters. I mean, first of all, the numbers are pretty compelling. A couple years ago, we had pretty much like no deals under a billion dollars in 2016. And as of last year, there were $30 billion worth of licensing deals from Chinese assets into the US, and 2025 is a very strong start, so they're definitely going to beat that number. So the reason why this is happening is in 2015, Chinese Communist Party put a priority of investing in biotech and that was a priority sectors. And it was 10 years ago, and that 10 years of journey started to play out for their benefit because China historically has been known for this active product ingredients and excipients, which is like the chemicals that pharmaceuticals were using to make small molecule products. And that journey now is taking them to upstream to more advanced innovation. Probably we still have not seen a first in class, but clearly they are going for best in class, like those are the shots on goal if you are seeing more and more. Well, that's why, that would be my question because I know that we've seen sort of they're doing copycats or metoos in terms of the type of innovation coming out of China. Um, do we expect that they have the wherewithal to outdo the US then in that sense, in terms of coming up with the next blockbuster for the entire world? I mean, there are a couple examples, early examples that some of the Chinese based assets actually head-to-head comparisons, you know, beat or exceed, at least match the efficacy and safety profile of some of the Western developed compounds. But this is also a journey as the audio question. So what is it, what do they need more to get there? So they have the talent. I mean a lot of Western educated MDs and PhDs went back to China working on that. The government itself as a part of prioritization program have been investing in it. So then the question is, do they have an exit strategy for those entrepreneurs? And that I think is where they are lacking because there's no like an IPO market that is comparable to the Western standards. There's no like an M&A exit until recently. I think that's where the weakness kind of may be the opportunity for them to come up. But the deals we were talking about, they're because of the intellectual property concerns, because of the concerns of reliability and trust in the data because, you know, there's no such institution in the world like FDA that everyone trusts and hopefully continue to trust. And for that reason, the deals seem to be more asset purchases. So I'm not taking a risk by operating in China, but I'm buying the asset and in a licensing deal, and I'll continue to develop it, especially if you can make this cheaper and faster in China, which has been their competitive advantage over the Western companies, then you bring that into a human fast and then the human testing can be done, validations can be done in the more Western setting. I think that can be a winning formula for the industry. PharmaSens and SiBionics to develop wearable insulin patch pump
Swiss company PharmaSens and SiBionics have entered a development partnership for niia signature, an all-in-one wearable that integrates the delivery of insulin with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) into a compact pump. Through this device, the parties anticipate simplifying the management of diabetes for individuals who utilise insulin, aiming to minimise the daily therapy load. The wearable will leverage PharmaSens' patented platform technologies along with the biosensor capabilities of SiBionics. Both companies will offer their engineering and development know-how to bring this patch pump to the market. PharmaSens CEO Marcel Both said: 'This partnership marks a significant milestone toward realising our vision of a fully integrated, discreet, and intuitive insulin-therapy system. 'SiBionics' proven expertise in sensor technology is a perfect complement to our platform.' PharmaSens is currently developing a portfolio of three insulin patch pumps, including niia signature, designed to cater to a broad range of user needs. The range begins with the niia essential, a basal-bolus insulin pump that prioritises ease of use by minimising complexity. The niia advanced provides additional options and can be controlled through a smartphone, also allowing connection to an external CGM.
