Vetri Maaran moves Madras High Court against denial of censor certificate for Manushi

The Hindu02-06-2025

Popular film director and producer C. Vetri Maaran has approached the Madras High Court challenging the denial of a censor certificate for Andrea Jeremiah-starrer Manushi, produced by him and directed by Gopi Nainar.
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh is slated to hear his writ petition on Monday (June 2, 2025).
According to the petitioner, he had produced the movie, which deals with the custodial interrogation of a woman, under his production house, Grassroot Film Company.
He said the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), in September 2024, refused to issue a censor certificate for the movie on the ground that its contents portrayed the State in bad light and that the movie had confused leftist communism with mainstream communism.
Stating that he was neither given an opportunity to be heard before the denial of the censor certificate nor informed of the individual views of the censor committee members, the petitioner said he had submitted a representation to the CBFC on March 29, 2025, requesting the constitution of an expert committee comprising human rights activists to re-examine the movie.
The petitioner sought a direction to the CBFC to consider his representation and issue a speaking order after the re-examination of the movie by the expert committee. He also said he was willing to edit the movie if any of its scenes did not fall within the parameters of freedom of speech and expression.
The movie's trailer released by the production house, and shared by actor Vijay Sethupathi on his social media accounts, in April 2024 had received critical acclaim after it showed moving scenes related to the custodial torture of a woman suspected to be a terrorist.
Besides Ms. Andrea, Nasser, Tamizh, Hakkim Shah, and Balaji Sakthivel too had acted in the movie. Acclaimed musician Ilaiyaraaja composed the music for the film helmed by Mr. Nainar, known for Nayanthara-starrer Aramm.

CBFC asks Union Minister Suresh Gopi's JSK - Janaki vs State of Kerala makers to change title over Goddess Sita's name

Industry sources said the release of the Suresh Gopi-starrer Malayalam movie JSK-Janaki vs. State of Kerala has hit a hurdle. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly denied it screening permission over the name of the title character. The Pravin Narayanan-directed movie, with Union Minister Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran in lead roles, reportedly revolves around the legal battle of an assaulted woman named Janaki against the state. Anupama Parameswaran and Suresh Gopi in a still from JSK - Janaki vs State of Kerala. According to sources, the film was reportedly denied screening clearance, citing that Janaki, an alternative name of Goddess Sita, cannot be used for such a character. Pravin, in a Facebook post, confirmed on Saturday that the Censor Board has denied screening permission for the movie. He said in the post, without elaborating, that there would be no release on 27 June. Meanwhile, noted director B Unnikrishnan, the general secretary of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), on Sunday told reporters that the makers of the JSK were clearly informed by the CBFC that the name Janaki cannot be used in the movie. "They have not received any written information in this regard. A show-cause notice is yet to be received. They expect to get it by Monday," he told reporters in Kochi. The CBFC clearly stated to the film's crew that the name Sita cannot be used either in the title or for the character in the movie, Unnikrishnan said. "The story is about the legal fight carried out by an assaulted woman against the state. It is said (by the Board) that Goddess Sita's name cannot be given to the woman character who suffered assault," he said. Another filmmaker faced similar issue He said another Malayalam filmmaker recently faced a similar issue over the name of a character called Janaki in his movie, and he was forced to change it to Jayanthi to get Censor Board certification. Terming the Board's action as "strange", the FEFKA secretary asked where the country is heading. He said filmmakers are even denied the freedom to give the characters in their films the names of their choice. The director also said that in this circumstance, it would be tough to choose a name for characters belonging to the Hindu religion, as the majority of them would be epithets of Gods or Goddesses. Union Minister Suresh Gopi and the makers of the film were immediately not available for a comment.

Veteran actor Dalip Tahil , who portrayed Jawaharlal Nehru in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra 's Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, recently opened up about a memorable meeting with the legendary athlete Milkha Singh . He revealed that the conversation not only deepened his understanding of Nehru's role in Milkha's life but also helped him bring authenticity to his performance on screen. Dalip, who played a small yet impactful role in the Farhan Akhtar-starrer, shared that he had specifically asked the film's team to arrange a meeting with Milkha Singh. 'He was the only one among us who had actually met Jawaharlal Nehru,' Dalip said in an interview with Red FM, adding that hearing directly from Milkha would help him better embody the late Prime Minister's persona. 'Nehru ji manipulated me by making me Captain' During the meeting, Milkha Singh spoke candidly with the actor for nearly four hours. One of the most poignant memories he shared was how Nehru had persuaded him to travel to Lahore in 1960 to compete in the 200m event, despite Milkha's strong reluctance. 'Milkha ji told me, 'I didn't want to go back to Pakistan , but Prime Minister Pandit Nehru told me to go and manipulated me by making me the Captain of the team,'' Dalip recalled. 'Nehru ji didn't want to send a politician. After Milkha returned victorious from Lahore, Nehru asked him what reward he wanted. 'Milkha Singh told me he said, 'I want leaves,'' Dalip laughed. 'His wife joked, 'If he had asked for 100 acres of land, we'd be landowners by now!'' Dalip concluded by saying, 'Milkha Singh told me Nehru changed his life.'
