Foreign stars, local cyclists thrill Bintulu crowd

BINTULU (June 16): Indonesian rider Zaenal Fanani of Bolo 1000 Thrill Factory Racing Issi delivered a powerhouse performance in the Men's Open of Bintulu Mountain Bike Challenge 2025.
He clocked 01:00:56 to secure first place followed by teammate Ihza Muhd in 1:02:18 to cement a dominant showing for their team. Laurel Lauridsen Adrian of Ghost Speed Racing Team was third in 1:08:38.
The Women's Open was won by Drevionna Magdelynna Davin followed by Eirene Erving and Nurfara Ain Nabiela Abdul Hafiz on the podium.
Top three in the two Men's Masters races were Azizulazi Shaari, Mohd Zukri Tahir and Mohd Ridzuan Yusoff (A) with Supian Nor, Rozaine Ratu and Hardy Suntoi (B). The Men's Junior category was won by M Fajar Ramadhan who finished ahead of Akmal Thaif Begurdy and Muhd Fakhrul Afif Mislani.
Local talents Aidil Syahmizan Abdul Rahim, Mohd Zakwan Zamahari and Ismail Abdul Ghafar finished in that order to top the Bintulu Closed category.
Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang, who gave away the prizes, commended Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) as the main organiser. A total of 134 riders took part in the event including those from Brunei, Indonesia and South Africa.
'This is proof that Bintulu is increasingly being recognised as an international extreme sports destination,' said Pang.

KUALA LUMPUR: Cheah Liek Hou bagged a brilliant double at the Asian Para Championships once again but not without a major scare in the men's singles final against long-time rival Dheva Anrimusthi in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Sunday. Liek Hou, a two-time Paralympic champion, held his nerve to edge the Indonesian 21-19, 15-21, 21-19 in a tense SU5 final, surviving a late fightback that saw Dheva save four match points before the Malaysian finally sealed it. Despite struggling with a right heel injury, Liek Hou later returned to the court to partner Fareez Anuar and clinch the men's doubles title with a 21-14, 21-18 win over India's Hardik Makkar-Ruthick Ragupathi. It marked his 10th career title at the Asian Championships — a quadrennial event last held in 2016 and cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. "I picked up the heel injury last year and have been getting treatment since, but I haven't stopped competing," said Liek Hou. "It gets painful after tough tournaments like this, but I'm coping well. Dheva also isn't playing many tournaments right now — we're both focused on the Asian Para Games in Nagoya next year." The latest triumph continues an impressive run for Liek Hou, who also completed the double at the Dubai and Spanish Para Championships earlier this year. "Their backing has allowed me to compete regularly on the world para circuit," he added. Malaysia had more reason to celebrate as Amin Burhanuddin captured his first major international title, claiming the men's singles SL4 crown with a 23-21, 21-15 win over India's Surya Kant Yadav. Amin has been training under Liek Hou's coach, Nova Armada, for the past seven months, and his progress hasn't gone unnoticed. "It was great to see Liek Hou push through the pain barrier to win two titles," said Nova. "But I'm also very impressed with how Amin performed. He's already 31, but I believe he has what it takes to win a medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics before he retires." Liek Hou and several of the national para shuttlers will now turn their attention to the British and Irish Para Internationals in Cardiff next month. PETALING JAYA: Para shuttler Cheah Liek Hou shows no signs of slowing down after bagging two golds in the Asian Para Badminton Championships. The 37-year-old fought hard to beat Indonesian arch rival Dheva Anrimusthi 21-19, 15-21, 21-18 in the men's singles SU5 (upper body impairment) final in Korat on Sunday (June 22). In the semi-finals, Liek Hou defeated Suryo Nugroho of Indonesia 21-12, 17-21, 11-8 (rtd). "After nine months, I'm meeting these Indonesian players again just like at the Paris Paralympics, and I'm glad that I defeated them although I'm not physically at my best," said the Paris Paralympics champion, who is carrying leg injury. "It was quite tough for me, and I still feel the pain in leg after the winning here. I will come back home and get it treated." It was the Liek Hou's fourth gold in the singles in the Asian meet after also triumphing in 2004, 2008 and 2012. He was a bronze medal winner at the 2016 edition in Beijing. The two-time Paralympic gold medallist then teamed up with Fareez Anuar to easily come out on top over India's Hardik Makkar-Ruthick Ragupathi 21-14, 21-8 for the men's doubles SU5 title. Fareez settled for a bronze in the singles after going down 18-21, 9-21 to Dheva in the last four a day earlier.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's young rider Muhammad Hakim Danish Ramli had to settle for second place after being overtaken at the last moment in Race Two of Round Four of the 2025 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup (RBMRC) at the Mugello Circuit in Florence, Italy today. Muhammad Hakim, better known as Hakim Danish, started from fifth on the grid and endured a tough race before being edged out by just 0.011 seconds by Indonesian rider Veda Pratama, who won the race with a time of 26 minutes 44.347 seconds. Third place went to Benat Fernandez of Spain.
