Lawrence shares sixth as second round ends at rainy US Open
OAKMONT - Thriston Lawrence sank a four-foot par putt Saturday morning to complete his storm-halted second round of the US Open in a share of sixth place at rainy Oakmont.
The 28-year-old South African, halted just shy of the clubhouse by heavy rain Friday night, finished on the ninth hole to complete a four-over par 74 round and stand on one-over 141 through 36 holes.
That left him level with Frenchman Victor Perez, four strokes adrift of US leader Sam Burns, who finished a round of 65 on Friday to stand on three-under 137.
"Just about when I was going to take my putt, the siren sounded," Lawrence said Friday. "A bit frustrating in that sense, but those are the rules... It's an important putt. Each shot means a lot in a championship like this."
American J.J. Spaun, on 138, and Norway's Viktor Hovland on 139 were the only other players below par on the formidable layout, which figures to be far more receptive in round three after an overnight drenching with rain expected to continue all day Saturday.
The only other morning drama came as American Philip Barbaree sank a five-foot par putt on the ninth to shoot 71 and become the last player to make the cut, doing so on the number at seven-over 147.
That earned him the chance to play alone in the first spot off the first tee at 9:12 a.m. (1312 GMT) to start the third round.
Among the leaders, Burns and Spaun were set for a 3:35 p.m. tee time, 11 minutes after Hovland and Australia's Adam Scott begin in the penultimate pairing.
World number two Rory McIlroy, nine strokes off the lead at 146, tees off at 10:34 a.m. with third-ranked American Xander Schauffele, the reigning British Open champion.
Northern Ireland's McIlroy completed a career Grand Slam by winning the Masters in April for his fifth major title.
World number one Scottie Scheffler, seeking back-to-back major titles after taking last month's PGA Championship, starts at 1:02 p.m. with fellow American Cameron Young. They were seven off the lead on 144.
In all, 67 golfers made the cut to play the final 36 holes.
Those missing the cut included defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, Sweden's Ludvig Aberg, past winners Wyndham Clark and Lucas Glover, six-time major winner Phil Mickelson, Gary Woodland and Dustin Johnson, England's Justin Rose and Ireland's Shane Lowry.
Spectators were kept off the course until after the second round was complete, with the US Golf Association announcing that access to some spectator viewing areas will be limited due to heavy rain.

HALLE WESTFALEN, GERMANY - Home favourite Alexander Zverev shrugged off a mystery illness at Halle on Friday to battle past Italian Fabio Cobolli and progress to the last four of the Wimbledon warm-up. The German second seed felled Cobolli 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) and will next face Daniil Medvedev, after the Russian third seed beat American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-3 in his quarter-final. "I felt fine before the match, and then out of nowhere I felt really, really bad and felt ill," recounted Zverev. "I went to throw up, and then 15 minutes later I felt okay again. So I don't know what it was. I've never experienced that before, to be honest. Hopefully I will be fine the next couple of hours, when the adrenalin settles. After that, I think it was a pretty good match." He sealed the contest with a big first serve in the second set tie-break. Medvedev earlier reached his third semi of the season. He is guaranteed to return to the Top 10 in the ATP rankings. Zverev, who last met Medvedev in the 2024 Australian Open semi-finals, said: "Definitely he's one of the toughest opponents in my career. It's going to be a great match and I'm really looking forward to facing him." In the other quarter-finals, Alexander Bublik, who claimed defending champion and world number one Jannik Sinner's scalp on Wednesday, eased past Tomas Machac to set up a last four date with eighth seed Karen Khachanov who despatched Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-2. Bublik revealed his giant-killing Sinner success had cost him sleep. "I didn't have a really good night of sleep," the 2023 Halle winner said. 'I tried to keep focused, but there are thoughts and everything on social media, receiving a lot of messages."

Sold out 35th birthday celebration for 12 000 women in Sunday's SPAR Women's Challenge Durban
The SPAR Women's 10km Challenge will celebrate a major milestone on Sunday in Durban as it marks the 35thanniversary of the first SPAR Women's race. The SPAR Women's Challenge was first run in Durban in 1990 and later spread to other cities around the country, making the overall SPAR Challenge the world's biggest woman only street race. Race organizers have confirmed that the 10km race and 5km fun run are sold out. Many of South Africa's elite female athletes will be running on Sunday, 22 June hoping to gain points for the SPAR Grand Prix, which incorporates races in Cape Town, Durban, Tshwane, Gqeberha and Johannesburg. Pretoria's own Glenrose Xaba (Boxer), who last year became the first South African to win the SPAR Grand Prix since international athletes were admitted in 2019, aims to become the third runner, after Rene Kalmer and Irvette van Zyl, to win the title three times. Xaba won the Cape Town SPAR Women's race in March this year. Earlier this month, she ran a personal best in a 5000m track race in France, with a time of 15:10.42, so she is currently in good form and ready for Durban. Hoping to challenge Xaba will be Ethiopian Selem Gebre (Nedbank), who finished second in Cape Town, and young Tuks runner Karabo Mailula, who came third. Gebre finished second overall in the SPAR Grand Prix last year. Other top runners include Cacisile Sosibo (Boxer), who was the second best South African performer in last year's SPAR Grand Prix, and teammates the Phalula twins, Diana-Lebo and Lebogang, who are both former SPAR Grand Prix winners. The 12 000 entrants will each stand a chance win a Hyundai Exter SUV from the lucky draw. 'We are proud to offer our stunning Exter as a prize for the SPAR Women's Challenge. Maubane added that by supporting organisations like Sinethemba, SPAR is investing in a future where women are safe, empowered and have the necessary resources they need to thrive. The route for the race is the same as last year. The 10km route is flat, but race director Brad Glasspoole says it is anything but monotonous. 'There's a fine line between 'flat and fast' and 'monotonous',' says Glasspoole. 'This route has slight elevation loss and gain, which keep it interesting and is good for the athletes' The race starts on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue and finishes on the outer fields of Hollywood Kings Park Stadium.
