New I-295 bridge opening this weekend in Fayetteville will change traffic pattern
A new bridge along Strickland Bridge Road in western Fayetteville is expected to open this weekend, according to a news release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The bridge opening set for May 31 is a milestone in the ongoing construction of Interstate 295, also known as the Fayetteville Outer Loop. The bridge is part of a future interchange with I-295. The bridge is part of a $151.8 million contract awarded in 2022 to construct the final five-mile segment of I-295 between Camden and Raeford roads. The full segment is scheduled to be completed by summer 2026. According to the release, the interstate remains under construction beneath it, but the new overpass will allow traffic to travel over it. More traffic news: Road work to close lanes on All American Freeway and Skibo Road The bridge opening will bring changes to local traffic patterns. A section of Century Circle will be permanently closed and converted into a dead end near the new Strickland Bridge Road exit for I-295. In addition, a new signalized intersection at Strickland Bridge, Stoney Point and Barefoot roads is set to open May 31. If weather or other unforeseen delays occur, the contractor will implement the traffic changes on June 2, the release said. The altered route will affect how residents access nearby schools and the Cliffdale Regional Branch Library. Drivers who previously used Strickland Bridge Road to reach Century Circle will now need to cross the new overpass, turn right on Stoney Point Road, and then turn right again onto Century Circle. NCDOT said drivers should slow down and use caution near the work zone as the new pattern takes effect. Government Watchdog Reporter Claire C.
