Bay City Rollers icon reveals he suffered 'horrific' abuse at hands of predator

Metro3 days ago

Stuart 'Woody' Wood, guitarist for the Bay City Rollers, has revealed he suffered 'horrific' abuse at the hands of 'true monster' manager Tam Paton.
The Bay City Rollers formed in the late 60s and went on to have huge hits across the 70s with Bye Bye Baby and Give A Little Love.
They were branded as the boys next door, with a clean-cut image that vastly contrasted the behind-the-scenes truth of the abuse they suffered at the hands of Paton.
Wood, 68, has shared his experiences for the first time in an autobiography, Mania, having kept his pain a secret for five decades.
'I met Tam when I was 16 years old,' the guitarist wrote. 'He was intimidating and a bully, and all the disgusting things said about him are accurate.
'He was a predator. He abused me as he did others.'
Paton was jailed in 1982 for three years after pleading guilty to the sexual abuse of 10 teenage boys.
He was arrested in 2003 on child sexual abuse charges as well as being accused of trying to rape former Rollers guitarist Pat McGlynn but the police released him on insufficient evidence.
Les McKeown, the late singer for the band, also claimed that Paton had raped him and had given him drugs to cope with touring and pressures.
In an excerpt from his book, Wood continued: 'It was a horrific and harrowing time. The drugs he plied us with were part of that control.'
The only original member, who appears on all Bay City Rollers albums, said he tried to 'let some things go' for his own peace.
He wrote: 'My take is that to have a healthy mind, you have to let some things go, as much as it might pain you to do so.
'So, when Tam's squalid little life came to an end in 2009, I stopped thinking about him.'
Paton died at his home in Edinburgh on April 8, 2009, at age 70 from a suspected heart attack, weighing over 25 stone (160 kg) at the time.
'He was a terrible human being, but the way I see it, he doesn't get to define me,' added Wood, defiantly. 'Tam f******g Paton doesn't get to win.'
Speaking to The Sun, Wood shared: 'We never discussed it – any of us – it just happened. We were all survivors, but with Les it felt like it hit him harder.'
McKeown died age 65 on April 20, 2021, from cardiac arrest, which doctors said had been caused in part by his alcohol and drug abuse over the years.
In the 2023 documentary Secrets Of The Bay City Rollers, his wife Peko revealed that he used to scream in his sleep, while his son Jubei said his dad 'never found peace'.
Wood acknowledged that his feelings were complex towards Paton, having invited the former manager to his 1997 wedding and calling him a 'lovable rogue' on occasion.
He explained: 'It's not like I locked all those experiences away, stuffed down the bad memories, pretending they didn't happen.
'I just choose to not let them shape my life.'
The allegations extended beyond the Rollers, with Paton accused of abusing boys in children's homes, which the documentary addressed.
An anonymous victim said he was 13 when he was plied with drink and drugs at a star-studded party at Paton's house.
He said he was raped by three men, including the manager, then blackmailed with photographs of the abuse into bringing in more victims. More Trending
The man admitted it was the 'guiltiest' he's ever felt, having taken 20 boys to Paton's house but never reporting it to the police because they would 'never listen'.
Others have come forward over the years, claiming abuse, including singer Nobby Clarke who said Paton told him to sleep with Radio 1 DJ Chris Denning for better promotion.
Denning was later arrested over various sexual abuse crimes, including of children, and died in jail while serving two 13-year sentences.

The pictures of Billi at Georgia and Tommy's second wedding, which was held in Mallorca, come after her ex Andy Carroll was quizzed by police. The Sun on Sunday has exclusively revealed how the ex-Premier League footballer was questioned over bust-ups with his girlfriend Lou Teasdale on the Greek party island Mykonos. Carroll and make-up artist to the stars Lou are said to have rowed at a packed beachside restaurant and then at their hotel. One worker at the Nikolus Tavern said of the first argument: 'We recognised him as the footballer Andy Carroll immediately. 'He seemed very drunk and furious with his partner. 'He was using very bad words. It was improper behaviour. The woman looked very upset.' Police arrived after the first incident and took the former Newcastle, Liverpool and West Ham ace to one side for a chat. He was later allowed to return to Lou. But just hours later, police were called again by alarmed staff after reports of damage to the couple's room at a £500-a-night boutique hotel. Andy Carroll quizzed by cops twice after bust-ups with girlfriend at packed restaurant and hotel during Greek holiday Officers are said to have escorted Carroll to a local station for questioning. He was not arrested and it is understood no further action was taken. A joint statement from Carroll and Lou said: 'Whilst having a private dinner in a restaurant on a quiet holiday in Mykonos, we had a heated discussion of the sort that most couples have had on occasion. It quickly became apparent to the police that there was no reason for them to be there. 'We went outside the restaurant with them together as they insisted they wanted to 'look after' us. 'As far as we are concerned, the situation has been blown out of all proportion by an interested member of the public. No one was arrested and no one was charged with anything. We are very happy, in love and looking forward to our future together and we are disappointed that a private disagreement has become a public matter.' The Mykonos hotel and police on the island declined to comment when contacted. Meanwhile, Billi touched down in Mallorca last week ahead of Georgia and Tommy's wedding. The mum-of-three, who also looks after Carroll's two eldest children from a previous relationship, looked incredible as she showed her ex what he is missing in a bikini. She has since shared a selection of photos from Georgia and Tommy's big day. They previously said 'I do' in 2023. Billi gushed: "Congratulations @georgiakousoulou & @iamtommyfordham. "The best day & night celebrating you both ❤️." Billi announced her split with Carroll in October last year. Sabrina Carpenter's sexuality ISN'T the problem – instead it's those who vilify women

Our columnist Zara Janjua has her say on the debate around Sabrina Carpenter's new album cover ZARA JANJUA Sabrina Carpenter's sexuality ISN'T the problem – instead it's those who vilify women WHAT exactly is a regressive stereotype of a woman? Because judging by the collective societal nosebleed over Sabrina Carpenter's latest album cover — where she's on all fours, hair playfully held by a man, beside the title Man's Best Friend — apparently, it's any woman who dares to be sexual on purpose. Advertisement 2 Zara Janjua doesn't see what all the fuss is about with Sabrina Carpenter's album cover Credit: The Sun 2 The Espresso singer sparked a backlash over her Man's Best Friend album cover Credit: instagram Cue the outrage. Cue the Facebook dissertations. Cue Glasgow Women's Aid calling it 'a throwback to tired tropes' and suggesting it promotes 'violence and control'. I mean, really? This is what sends people into moral convulsions? Advertisement A consenting adult who's posing in a bit of cheeky sub/dom cosplay? The trope I'm personally bored to death with is the pure, respectable, sexless woman. You know, the one whose value peaks just before she hits puberty and plummets the minute she discovers lube. That's the real regressive stereotype. The virgin. The saint. The woman who exists to be wanted but never wants. We've been peddling that fantasy since Eve got blamed for a fruit salad. Women have always been judged and persecuted for their sexuality — from witch trials to lobotomies, FGM to honour killings. Advertisement Meanwhile, men are celebrated for doing the exact same thing. The Weeknd released a whole concept album as a sleazy club predator and was hailed as 'visionary'. Sabrina Carpenter fans only just realising she's a secret nepo-baby with HUGELY famous TV star family member I'm beyond bored of the double standards. And it's everywhere. Notably on TV — where stereotypes and tropes are rampant. When Disney+ brought Jilly Cooper's Rivals to screen last year, they had their chance to modernise the script but they blew it. The lead male — Rupert Campbell-Black, played by Alex Hassell — is deliciously promiscuous, arrogant, entitled, and is allowed to shag everything that moves, cheat on his partners, seduce stable girls and still ride off into the sunset with a young, virginal beauty, triumphant and completely adored. Advertisement But Sarah Stratton, played by Emily Atack, who mirrors Rupert's behaviour? She's a side character. At first, she's the punchline then the villain — calculating, emotionally unstable, and punished for daring to want. Same libido, different ending. One gets the girl. The other gets the boot. And don't even get me started on what Hollywood did to Samantha Jones — sex goddess. Publicist. Icon. In the final season of Sex And The City while Charlotte was enjoying family life with her husband and adopted child, as Miranda found vulnerability and married Steve and Carrie finally got her happily-ever-after with Big . . . Samantha got breast cancer. Advertisement A disease written-in to attack her womanhood and her libido. Even Kim Cattrall said the storyline felt like punishment for her character's rampant sexual appetite and wild lifestyle. Then came And Just Like That, where Samantha was exiled to London and reduced to a 76-second phone cameo. (Yes, I timed it.) Kim Cattrall has confirmed she won't be returning for season three, because, honestly, who wants to be the sexy scapegoat again? And we're supposed to believe Sabrina is the problem? The problem is that we vilify women who express their sexuality or we turn them into a joke. Advertisement And don't come at me with 'What about the kids?' If your teenager's understanding of sex, respect and relationships comes solely from an album cover, that's not Sabrina's fault — that's yours. Maybe we should be teaching young people to talk about consent, fantasy and desire like actual humans, instead of pretending sex doesn't exist and then blaming women when it inevitably does. The backlash isn't about the image. It's about control. People hate when a woman launches herself crotch-first into the world, without shame, without compromise, and without asking if it's OK first.

Ex-England football star Andy Carroll 'is questioned twice by police on Greek party island after restaurant and hotel bust-ups with girlfriend'

Ex-England football star Andy Carroll was questioned twice by Greek police over a series of bust-ups with girlfriend Lou Teasdale while the pair holidayed in Mykonos, it has been reported. Caroll, 36, was interrogated about the arguments with his make-up artist lover in a restaurant and at their hotel on the Greek party island, The Sun on Sunday reports. Speaking about the first incident, a worker at the Nikolus Tavern told The Sun on Sunday: 'He seemed very drunk and furious with his partner. 'He was using very bad words. It was improper behaviour. The woman looked very upset.' According to the restaurant worker, cops arrived and took the former footballer aside for a chat. He was later allowed to girlfriend Lou. 'Police spoke to him. He was allowed to return, and the couple left after paying for their meal. Andy was very calm when the police arrived — he stood up and spoke to them outside the restaurant', the restaurant worker added. Just hours later, cops were called again by hotel staff following reports of damage in their room, MailOnline understands that the former England striker was taken to the police station for questioning, but he was not arrested and no further action was taken. The incident was confirmed by a hotel employee, who claimed Carroll broke the door. That night, Lou left the hotel and spent the night at Soho Roc House. MailOnline has approached Carroll and Teasdale's representatives for comment. A joint statement from the couple given to The Sun said: 'Whilst having a private dinner in a restaurant on a quiet holiday in Mykonos, we had a heated discussion of the sort that most couples have had on occasion. We are very happy, in love and looking forward to our future together and we are disappointed that a private disagreement has become a public matter.' The pair began dating last year after he separated from his TOWIE star wife Billi Mucklow last September. Carroll and Mucklow called it quits divorce after two years of turbulent marriage, the footballer confirmed last year. Andy Carroll GB Bordeaux during the French National 2 football match Girondins de Bordeaux against Saint-Pryve Saint-Hilaire at the Matmut Atlantique stadium in Bordeaux South West of France on November 9, 2024 In 2022, their wedding was almost called off when Carroll was pictured drunkenly passed out in bed with two women in Dubai on his stag do. Mucklow forgave him after one of the women insisted nothing sexual happened. Less than two years after their nuptials, the couple's marriage was over - with Carroll confirming they had started divorce proceedings after 'a hard few months for our family'. Carroll said in a statement at the time: 'Billi and I have privately separated earlier this year and we are under way with our divorce proceedings'. 'It has been a hard few months for our family and we continue to move forward amicably for our children.' Carroll and Mucklow have three children together Arlo, Wolf, and Marvel Mae and she also raises his two children Emilie Rose, 15, and Lucas, 14 from his past relationship.
