Creative Approaches Like Poetry Recitals Can Boost ASEAN Unity - Ministry Sec-Gen

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Creative approaches such as poetry recital programmes should be strengthened as part of efforts to further foster regional unity and cooperation, particularly among ASEAN countries, says Ministry of National Unity secretary-general Datuk Ruji Ubi.
He said that besides political and economic diplomacy, cultural and literary activities should also be emphasised to bring regional communities closer together.
'Creative approaches like tonight's poetry recitals should be further developed to attract greater participation from ASEAN countries, especially those who can recite poems and verses in the Malay language,' he told Bernama here tonight, after attending the poetry recital programme organised by the National Writers Association of Malaysia (PENA) in conjunction with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL).

"I had a brief discussion with the prime minister earlier, and I hope that one of the strategies we adopt will help realise your vision for the Asean Grid, which will provide an economic development boost to Asean, particularly through Malaysia's contribution," he said. The Premier also said the presence of Anwar and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the cultural event reflected the strong relationship between the federal government and Sarawak. "In fact, I was informed that the prime minister had another engagement scheduled for tonight. "But he said, 'No, I want to go to Sarawak'… This reflects the close bond of brotherhood," he added. Themed 'Peji Kenep Panau Pegep', which means 'United We Progress' in the Kayan ethnic language, the event featured traditional performances by the Orang Ulu, Bidayuh and Iban communities. Cambodia closes 2 more border checkpoints with Thailand

PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Sunday that two more border crossings with Thailand were completely shut down amid an ongoing border dispute between the two ASEAN member states, Xinhua reported. Hun Manet said the Thai army Saturday night informed the governor of Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province about its unilateral decision to close Choub Korki border checkpoint from Sunday onwards. 'I agreed with the governor's response that we will also close that border checkpoint permanently,' Hun Manet said in a post on his official social media platforms. 'I also ordered the governor to inform the Thai side that Cambodia has also decided to close another checkpoint at Choam, altogether with Choub Korki checkpoint from today onwards,' he added. The Thai army has announced the closure of the trade point at Chong Sai Taku in Buriram province, effective from Saturday. In a statement on Sunday, the Thai army said that it has implemented control measures for opening and closing all types of crossing points along the Thai-Cambodian border to comply with the security situation. Thai media reported on Sunday that the Thai army prepared to close two more crossing points in response to the Cambodian side's announcement to close two border crossings. Centralised, Temporary Labour Quarters Licences Can Be Revoked If Operators Violate Act 446

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 22 (Bernama) -- The Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) will not hesitate to revoke the operating licences of Centralised Labour Quarters (CLQ) and Temporary Labour Quarters (TLQ) if operators fail to comply with the provisions under the Employees' Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446). Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said the warning followed a commotion involving a group of foreign workers at a TLQ operating in a hotel here on Friday, which caused unease among local residents. He said Act 446 stipulated the provision of suitable housing and basic amenities for foreign workers, but that employers must also prioritise workers' welfare, safety, and discipline to avoid negative impacts on the surrounding community. 'CLQs and TLQs are meant to centralise the accommodation of foreign workers so that it doesn't affect local neighbourhoods. So it's very important to have this system. I have discussed this matter with the operators of such facilities. 'I've also issued a reminder to ensure that workers' welfare is safeguarded and that their presence does not disturb the community. If they fail, I will not hesitate to instruct the Labour Department (JTK) and local authorities (PBT) to revoke their licences,' he said at a press conference here today. Also present were Penang Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye and Penang Labour Department deputy director A. Thanavalli. Sim said the foreign worker permits of the companies involved could also be cancelled, stressing that such actions were not meant to be punitive against industries or employers, but to ensure they understood the consequences of failing to manage their workers responsibly. He added that the hotel in Bukit Mertajam had been approved by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) to operate as a TLQ until 2027, and had also obtained certification from the Labour Department. A total of 1,113 migrant workers were housed at the TLQ—comprising 946 from Bangladesh, 129 from Nepal and 38 from Myanmar.
