The New York Yankees have desperately needed to add an infielder to their roster for months now. With Gleyber Torres leaving town in free agency, the Bronx Bombers were left with a hole in the lineup, and it's yet to be filled.
With Oswaldo Cabrera ending up on the injured list with a gruesome leg injury earlier in the season, the Yankees' infield depth has been tested even further. New York is going to need to make a deal for an infielder, or it's going to struggle down the stretch.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently suggested the Yankees would look to swing a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates to reunite with infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa this season.

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - APRIL 5: Jazz Chisholm Jr. #13 of the New York Yankees slides in safely past Isiah Kiner-Falefa #7 of the Pittsburgh Pirates for a stolen base in the second inning during the game at PNC Park on April 5, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. More"Old friend Isiah Kiner-Falefa is likely to be dealt by Pittsburgh," Heyman wrote. "Could the Yankees, who showed interest last year, make sense to shore up the infield?"
On the season, Kiner-Falefa is slashing .282/.328/.352 with a 1.1 WAR. This comes after he posted a .638 OPS and 3.6 WAR last season.
The veteran is an excellent defender and would provide the Yankees with a reliable option who's already comfortable in the clubhouse and in the Bronx.
But adding him wouldn't be much of an upgrade. The Yankees need to make an impact move this season if they want to make a run back to the World Series. While there won't be too many star infielders on the market, the Yankees shouldn't add another veteran depth option. They need an impact maker.

J.C. Escarra emerging as Yankees' latest success story at catcher

Try it free There are former Yankee catchers thriving in a handful of spots around the league, from Luis Torrens with the Mets to Carlos Narváez in Boston. Agustín Ramírez has shown promise with the Marlins and veteran Jose Trevino is having a resurgent year with the Reds. All of those backstops have been dealt in the past year or so by the Yankees, who are now using J.C. Escarra as Austin Wells' primary backup, with Ben Rice filling in as well now that Giancarlo Stanton is back in the DH spot. Escarra impressed again in Saturday's 9-0 rout of the Orioles in The Bronx, as the lefty-swinging catcher not only hit his second homer of the season — this one into the second deck in right field — but also guided Clarke Schmidt through seven no-hit innings. Asked which accomplishment he was more excited about, Escarra said, 'Both.'' J.C. Escarra hits a home run during the Yankees-Orioles game on June 21, 2025. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect 'It was a great day for J.C.,' Aaron Boone said. 'He's been terrific all season for us behind the plate and we know what kind of hitter he is.' Escarra homered off Zach Eflin in the second inning, hit a sacrifice fly in the third, reached on an error in the fifth on a ball smoked at 106 mph that was muffed by second baseman Jackson Holliday, and added an RBI single in the sixth. 'He's capable of that,' Boone said of Escarra's offense. 'He had good at-bats today … [and] helped set the tone with the home run.' With Wells, Escarra and Rice all hitting from the left side, there's no perfect way to split playing time. Boone, when asked how the team would handle playing time with Rice's role behind the plate likely increasing, said, 'We'll see. Keep pushing.' CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS But Escarra certainly has given the Yankees reason to get him in the lineup, as he was one of a handful of left-handed hitters who made Eflin's life miserable Saturday, forcing him out of the game after three innings. J.C. Escarra (L.) talks with Clarke Schmidt during the Yankees-Orioles game on June 21, 2025. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Escarra has proven to be an excellent pitch framer and pitchers entered Saturday with a combined 2.79 ERA with him as their battery-mate this year. And that was before Schmidt extended his scoreless streak to a career-high 25 ¹/₃ innings. Escarra said he didn't notice Schmidt's no-hit bid until the sixth or seventh inning. 'I didn't look at the [scoreboard] because I was so focused on the game, but you notice things and thoughts creep into your head,'' Escarra said of Schmidt potentially getting the no-hitter. But Schmidt's pitch count — 103 through seven innings — prevented any chance of that happening, which was about the only disappointment for Escarra and the Yankees against Baltimore.

Yankees Rookie of the Year takes huge step toward July return

Yankees Rookie of the Year takes huge step toward July return originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Luis Gil took a real step forward Saturday afternoon. Before the Yankees hosted the Orioles in the Bronx, Gil threw live batting practice on the Yankee Stadium mound — his first time facing hitters since suffering a high-grade lat strain during spring training. He threw around 20 pitches and said afterward he felt encouraged by how his body responded. Advertisement 'I wasn't focused on velocity,' Gil told reporters. The estimate was Gil might have touched 96 miles an hour. That's not bad for a pitcher who hasn't been on a mound in a competitive setting in over three months. Jun 4, 2024; Bronx, New York, USA; New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil (81) reacts during the sixth inning against the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Penner-USA TODAY Sports Gil, 27, has been on the injured list since early March, but the Yankees remain hopeful he can rejoin the club sometime next month. His live session on Saturday marks a meaningful milestone. The next step will likely be another live BP before a minor-league rehab assignment begins. The Yankees would welcome his return. Gil was a breakout star last season, going 15–7 with a 3.50 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 151.2 innings. He led all rookies in wins and was named American League Rookie of the Year. For most of 2024, he looked like a long-term rotation piece. Advertisement That's what made his spring injury so frustrating. And that's what makes his return so important now. The Yankees' rotation has held together, but adding a healthy Luis Gil to the mix would give the starting staff and the bullpen a boost. Ryan Yarbrough has filled in nicely in the fifth spot, but he was brought in to be a reliever. For now, Gil isn't watching the radar gun. He's focused on how it feels. And on Saturday, for the first time in months, it felt like progress. That's some of the best news the Yankees have had in this miserable week.
