Pittsburgh Pirates beat by Rangers as Mitch Keller falls to 1-10; offense can't score for him

This article originally appeared on The Pittsburgh Pirates' offense has been bad for much of the season, but it's been particularly dormant when Mitch Keller pitches. That trend continued on Saturday at PNC Park as the Pirates have now dropped six of their last seven following a 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers. Advertisement For the second game in a row, the Rangers (38-39) took advantage of a Pirates' outfield miscue. After Ezequiel Duran walked to begin the third, Kyle Higashioka singled to left, but the ball skipped past Adam Frazier which allowed Duran to score from first. The Pirates (30-48) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on an Oneil Cruz sac fly, only to give the Rangers the lead right back. Corey Seager singled home a run off Keller in the top of the sixth, and Marcus Semien put Texas ahead 3-1 with a sac fly to center. Keller (1-10) took yet another loss after allowing three runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings pitched. Click here to read more from Advertisement Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Mets Trade Report Surfaces After Paul Skenes News

Mets Trade Report Surfaces After Paul Skenes News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets entered Saturday riding a seven-game losing streak. This season-worst stretch has seen New York squander its lead atop the National League East standings, now sitting one game back of the Philadelphia Phillies. Advertisement Despite this recent skid, New York still ranks atop MLB with a 3.15 team ERA. That said, a team can never have too much pitching during the 162-game grind, which is why even mid-tier starters can be expensive at the trade deadline. This dynamic has aided in Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes being floated as a potential trade candidate. Due to their 30-47 record, the Pirates have been contacted by multiple general managers about the availability of their 23-year-old right-hander (via Jim Bowden of The Athletic). Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes (30).Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images Several hypothetical trade ideas have suggested New York would need to deal its four best prospects to have a chance at landing Skenes. Despite the historic return Pittsburgh could get for its ace, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington went on record saying Skenes will not be dealt (via 93.7 The Fan). Advertisement Jon Heyman of the New York Post cited this news on Thursday when reporting on the Mets' trade deadline plans. "The Mets still lead MLB in starter ERA (2.95) but expect to be looking at starters at the deadline," he wrote. "... The Pirates and Braves say Paul Skenes and Chris Sale ($8 million team option) are going nowhere. So — beyond Sandy Alcantara, who has a 6.88 ERA — will any aces be available?" With Skenes off the market, Heyman floated Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta as a potential option for the Mets, but mentioned it could be a long shot. "Mets baseball president David Stearns knows Peralta from his Milwaukee days," Heyman wrote. "But Peralta would take a haul, and Stearns' reputation is he won't trade the farm." Advertisement The news of Skenes being off the market certainly removes the loftiest potential trade target for the Mets. But as Heyman reported, that won't stop them from being active before the deadline. Panthers disprove popular analytics narrative with their Stanley Cup win

Why are all the spreadsheet folks, who have lectured all of us for years that teams cannot win the Stanley Cup if they are paying their No. 1 goaltender at least 10 percent of the cap, so silent now after the Panthers have gone back-to-back with Sergei Bobrovsky in the net? Bobrovsky, who has completed the sixth season of his seven-year deal for $10 million per, shares the distinction with Aleksander Barkov as Florida's highest-paid player. A year ago, Bobrovsky accounted for 11.976 percent of the cap. This year, the 36-year-old Russian accounted for 11.363 percent of the cap. (Igor Shesterkin will account for 11.518 percent of the cap when the 29-year-old's eight-year extension at $11M per kicks in July 1. If the Rangers do not end the three-decade-plus drought during Shesterkin's tenure, it won't be because they invested too much into their franchise goalie.) And though Connor McDavid won the Conn Smythe last year before Sam Bennett was named the playoffs MVP this year, Bobrovsky was the ultimate difference maker each time around. There have been exceptions to the rule, but the notion that legit contenders can get by with middle-tier netminders has always been patently absurd.
