Yogi Adityanath accuses past UP governments of ties with gangster Dawood Ibrahim

Indian Express5 hours ago

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday accused past Uttar Pradesh governments of 'joining hands with the D-Company' and 'nurturing' fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim instead of focusing on development. He alleged that they compromised the state's security and turned Azamgarh into a 'hub of terror'.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Gorakhpur Link Expressway in Azamgarh, Adityanath said, 'They joined hands with the D-Company and Dawood's gang, compromising the state's security and turning Azamgarh into a hub of terror.'
The 91.352-km-long expressway, built at a cost of Rs 7,283 crore, is expected to connect the eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh more efficiently and promote regional development.
Referring to the alleged murder of a student, Adityanath said, 'Ajit Rai was murdered in 2007-08 at Shibli National College for standing up for 'Vande Mataram'. Today, no one would dare to do such a thing. If anyone tries to play with the security of the state, a 'ticket to Yamraj' is already booked for them.'
Without naming any party directly, the Chief Minister continued his attack, particularly targeting the Samajwadi Party. 'Before 2017, 'chacha-bhatija' used to go out for extortion. Today, it is 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas',' he said.
Adityanath said that industrial clusters will be developed along the expressways to generate local employment and provide youth with recognition and opportunities both in India and abroad.
He said that Azamgarh, which had long struggled with an 'identity crisis' despite having produced two Chief Ministers, has now become part of the 'mainstream of development'. The Gorakhpur Link Expressway, he said, will not only connect Azamgarh to Gorakhpur, but also provide a boost to the wider Purvanchal region.
'The expressway will bring eastern UP into the mainstream of development. Travel from Patna to Delhi will also become much easier. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway has already reduced the travel time from three hours to just 40-45 minutes,' Adityanath said, adding that the Ganga Expressway will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister by the end of the year.

Cheating case: HC relief for actor Soubin Shahir

Kochi: High court has extended the date for film actor , his father Babu Shahir and Shawn Anthony, producers of the hit film Manjummel Boys, to appear before police in connection with a financial cheating case. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They have now been directed to appear on June 26. Earlier, the Maradu police in Ernakulam had summoned the petitioners for interrogation on June 20, based on a cheating complaint filed by Siraj Valiyathara of Aroor. However, the petitioners' pre-arrest bail plea, which was posted for hearing on June 18, could not be taken up by high court. Accordingly, the bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas extended the appearance date to June 26 and posted the plea for hearing on June 23. The case stems from a complaint filed by Siraj before the Ernakulam magistrate court, alleging that Parava Films LLP, owned by the petitioners, had solicited his investment for the film's production. As per an agreement dated Nov 30, 2022, he disbursed a total of Rs 7 crore over multiple transactions. Despite the film's commercial success, the petitioners allegedly failed to honour the profit-sharing agreement. Based on the magistrate court's direction, Maradu police registered the case in 2024. In March 2025, high court had disposed of the petitioners' earlier pre-arrest bail pleas in view of a stay on the proceedings granted in a related petition. However, the court subsequently permitted the police to resume the investigation. Following this, the police issued fresh notices for interrogation, prompting the petitioners to file a new bail application.

Earlier this month, Elon Musk's Starlink received a licence from the telecom department for providing satellite internet services in India, a key milestone that will take it closer towards launching commercial operations in the country. COO of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell, on Tuesday called on Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, a meeting that comes just days after Starlink secured a licence from the Telecom Department. Scindia said discussions centred around various opportunities for collaboration in satellite communications to power Digital India. Elon Musk's recent initiatives in India shows his increasing focus on the country. These developments come at a time when Musk's tensions with the U.S. President Donald Trump has been growing in recent times. Tesla's first batch of vehicles, comprising five Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs, has already arrived in India. These vehicles were shipped from Tesla's Shanghai factory. According to Bloomberg News, based on official documents, the Model Y is currently the world's best-selling electric vehicle. Tesla's first showroom will open in Mumbai, likely by mid-July after which another in New Delhi. Starlink In India Starlink is a satellite internet service developed by SpaceX the American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company founded in 2002 by the world's richest man Musk. It provides high-speed, low-latency broadband internet worldwide using satellite technology and is aptly described by some as broadband beamed from the skies. Unlike conventional satellite services that rely on distant geostationary satellites, Starlink utilises the world's largest low Earth orbit or LEO constellation (550 km above Earth). This constellation of LEO satellites (7,000 now but eventually set to grow to over 40,000) and its mesh delivers broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, and video calls. Starlink, which had been vying for an India licence for some time now, recently signed pacts with Ambani's Reliance Jio and Mittal's Bharti Airtel, which together control more than 70 per cent of the country's telecom market, to bring the US satellite internet giant's services to India.
