Actress loses fight to cryogenically preserve teenage son

Metro5 days ago

An actress who was racing to raise $300,000 (£143,000) in a week to cryogenically preserve her son has been forced to hold his funeral.
Last month Australian actress Clare McCann begged for help following the death of her son Atreyu, who died aged 13.
Best known for appearing in the Channel [V] shows Blog Party and Clublife, Clare shared that her son had died by suicide after 'months of relentless bullying'.
Soon after she asked for support to 'help me preserve his life' and shared a link to a fundraiser, explaining she wanted to 'allow him to live again' with cryonics – the practice of freezing an individual who has died with the aim of reviving them sometime in the future.
But with a seven-day window in which to achieve her aim, Clare said she was fighting against the clock to drum up enough support.
However, a few weeks on, she's now been forced to hold her son's funeral after not raising the money in time.
On Monday, Atreyu's funeral was held in Sydney, with loved ones given their chance to say their final goodbyes.
During the service, held at Mary Immaculate Church in Waverley, videos were shown of him riding a horse, skateboarding and cuddling his favourite animals.
Standing in front of her son's coffin, which was covered in sunflowers, Clare spoke to the congregation about her 'best mate', who she named after the hero in The NeverEnding Story.
News.com.au reported her speaking about her son being 'looking so forward' to starting high school until bullies 'dimmed his light'.
'Atreyu you saved me from the nothingness, you brought my life indescribable joy when I had none,' she said.
'As you grew I revelled in your beauty. I always felt so blessed to have such a beautiful and wonderful boy. You were and will always be my best mate.
'You were the most intelligent, funniest person I have ever known.'
She then went on to vow to make him proud and dedicate her life to campaigning against bullying.
'I'm sorry if I failed you. I'm sorry if I loved you too much and made you too gentle,' she said through tears. https://www.instagram.com/p/DKBErftSkgM/?hl=en
'Now the world knows his name, his story and his message,' she added. More Trending
When first announcing the death of her son, Clare posted on social media: 'It's with shattered hearts that we share the passing of my beautiful son, Atreyu McCann. He was the brightest light in my world — kind, creative, and endlessly loved.
'Right now, we are grieving a loss that words can't hold. Please give us time and space as we process this unimaginable pain.
'Thank you to everyone who has supported and loved Atreyu. We'll share more when we're ready. For now, please hold him in your hearts.'

Claudia Winkleman 'eternally grateful' after undergoing surgery

Claudia Winkleman has undergone eye surgery, she has revealed. The Traitors host, 53, has taken to social media to thank her eye surgeon for operating on her today. 'This amazing human makes me see. He's operated on my eyes before and he did it again today,' she said on Instagram, alongside a picture of her next to Dr Julian Stevens. 'No eyeliner for weeks and I sleep in googles (no words) but I'm eternally grateful,' she added. 'Do NOT zoom in on my left eye – it's wonky. Thank you Julian. I paid for the treatment, this isn't an ad. I just love him. It's very possible I'm still a bit sedated. Night night.' The Strictly presenter's comments section was flooded with support from well-wishers, as follower Suzanne Robinson said: 'Get well soon.' 'Love you !! Hope you feel better. Amazing man,' said ava_xoox while gurcharan_davany added: 'Speedy recovery eyeliner queen.' While it's not clear why Claudia underwent the surgery this time, she's previously been open about suffering with severe short-sightedness, which means she can't see objects far away. Speaking on the How To Fail podcast in 2023 about how she doesn't take too much notice of her appearance, Claudia explained: 'I was born, I think with minus 15 [eyes], so I've never really been able to see my face. It's all guesswork.' Claudia – who is known for her iconic long fringe – went on to say she's had operations because she was 'banging into walls' and she now wears lenses and glasses. However, despite laser eye surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Claudia found her vision was still blurry. Finding lightness in her eye issues – and acknowledging her trademark black eyeliner – Claudia said: 'Often when the kids have been playing with my phone with the camera switched round and I have to call somebody or I'm making a call, I'm like 'I don't understand why Ozzy Osbourne..I didn't even invite him round', and then I'm like, 'Ah, it's me.' More Trending Earlier this year, Claudia also touched on her condition on Gabby Logan's The Mid Point podcast. 'I've had so many operations on my eyes. I had a lens replacement in my left eye because my astigmatism was so bad I was minus 16, but that was 14 years ago,' she said. Claudia explained how she then became long-sighted: 'Then I had a little fiddle with but because I was so short sighted by then fixing it I'm now long sighted so I can't really read any more. 'I can with glasses, I've got plus 2.5 but I can't read The Bee Sting with those glasses and that light.' Got a story? Hue Dining and Ink Cafe are closing down at the end of June

Hong Kong's dining scene is losing two waterfront gems as Hue Dining, a modern Australian restaurant, and Ink Cafe, an al fresco cafe and bar, prepare to close their doors at the end of June. Run by Wolly Pig HK, these spots are well-loved for their casual bites, welcoming vibe, and killer harbour views. But it's not all sad news, as they're going out with a bang. To thank their loyal guests, Hue Dining is offering a 20 percent discount on their three-course lunch and dinner menus from June 23 to 26, as well as a farewell brunch on June 28 and 29. Those who dine on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday will also get a free welcome cocktail or mocktail with their dinner. As for Ink Cafe, they're throwing a renovation party on June 30 with happy hour prices starting at $80 for tap beers, gin and tonics, and cocktails. Bar snacks will also start from $80, so it's the perfect chance to raise a glass before Ink Cafe takes a quick break to reopen with a fresh look in July. Patrons of the two eateries will be happy to know that this is just a brief goodbye, as Woolly Pig HK has plans for a brand-new restaurant concept pop-up at the Hong Kong Museum of Art soon, promising to deliver the same stunning views and quality food. Keep an eye on our page for more updates coming soon.
