Films on the Green is back with free French movies in Chicago this summer

Bonjour, Chicago cinephiles—your summer just got subtitled. The beloved Films on the Green series is back for its third Windy City edition, delivering a très chic lineup of French films al fresco and en français (with English subtitles, of course). The open-air cinematic affair kicks off July 19 and runs through Aug. 9, transforming city parks into temporary Parisian playgrounds with screenings of stylish French favorites, all free to attend.
Presented by Villa Albertine and the French Consulate in Chicago in partnership with the Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks, this year's lineup leans glam and rebellious, with the theme French Rebels. Expect protagonists who break rules, challenge norms and look très cool doing it.
The series opens with a fashionable bang at Seward Park on July 19, featuring Coco Before Chanel (Coco avant Chanel), Anne Fontaine's biopic of the iconic designer starring Audrey Tautou. It's followed on July 26 by Jacques Demy's candy-colored musical The Young Girls of Rochefort (Les Demoiselles de Rochefort) at Lake Shore Park—a swingy, Technicolor dream of sisterhood and sailors.
August brings two more cinematic gems: Haute Couture on Aug. 2 at Lincoln Park's North Pond, a tale of redemption and embroidery inside the Dior atelier, and closing the series on Aug. 9 is How to Be a Good Wife (La Bonne Épouse), a satirical period comedy about a prim etiquette school thrown into feminist chaos, screening at Washington Square Park.
All screenings begin at sunset and are BYO-blanket, though stylish picnicking is encouraged. French flair optional but appreciated.
Originally launched in New York nearly two decades ago, Films on the Green has expanded beyond the Big Apple, with Chicago now enjoying a starring role. It's all part of Villa Albertine's mission to bring French culture to American audiences in accessible, engaging ways.

Bed-Stuy's latest wine bar hopes to introduce a space where the wine is accessible, the vibe is French and the oysters are freshly shucked on the half shell. A combination of the French words sel (salt) and lune (moon), Selune opened its doors on June 17, taking space in a 100-year-old brownstone. The wine and oyster bar is a labor of love from couple Marc Lioussanne and Bilen Gaga, who lean on their shared passions to bring it to life. Owner of Bistro Général & Mabel in Paris and previous beverage director of Eden Rock in St. Barths, Lioussane brings the hospitality angle, while Gaga's hand touches the interior, with an eye that is shaped by her fashion background and her Ethiopian roots. Salvaged from the previous tenant, a long, hand-stained walnut bar runs the length of the 50-seat wine bar, illuminated with globe lights. Across it, you can find two-seater tables and chairs plus a singular booth that's pushed up against the exposed brick walls painted white. Among a palette of tan leather, brushed gold and deep green accents, including live greenery, a single portrait hangs on the wall. Found near the rear of the restaurant, the painting depicts a scene of African women preparing a shared meal, nodding to Gaga's Ethiopian heritage. Naturally, wine is on order and there is plenty of it thanks to Lioussanne. Curating a selection over 120 bottles deep, the natural wine list is heavy on the regions of France with stops in Italy, New Zealand and Spain. They seem to be making good on their claim for accessibility as glasses can be had for $8-14 and bottles start as low as $27. There's also a list of cocktails for the partaking, including the miso-based Sunset Martini with rice vinegar syrup and the Ti Carib, an island-y number with coconut, allspice, juice and rum. Even the zero-proof varieties hold interest such as the Daisy with chia seeds, apple juice and a smoked lime as does the cherry tomato water-based Ruby Red, complimented with vanilla syrup and black peppercorn. Rounding it all out, the list includes a range of sakes plus beers sourced from Catskill Brewery. No matter what you drink, it can all easily be paired with Selune's French bistro fare and selections of the sea. Oysters are one of the main draws here, plucked from the eastern coasts of Cape Cod and Nova Scotia to Washington's Hood Canal. All can be dressed your way with a fleet of mignonettes for the choosing: ponzu scallion, shallot wine vinegar and lemongrass. If you'd rather your food come from land, you can build your own charcuterie board, starting with cured Jambon De Paris and Duck Foie Gras before selecting a few artisanal cheeses for the nibbling. Each board comes with a baguette and a swipe of butter to eat it all up.

He has enjoyed a rapid climb with one of his first horses Shes Perfect proving good enough to tackle Classic company. She lined up in the French 1,000 Guineas as a plucky outsider but ended the race as the first past the post, defeating local favourite Zarigana by a nose. ‌ However Longchamp stewards determined that Shes Perfect was guilty of interference which impacted fast-finishing favourite Zarigana who was awarded victory with the Watts filly placed second. ‌ Watts, trainer Charlie Fellowes and jockey Kieran Shoemark returned to France to argue that the stewards made the wrong call but lost their appeal. Shes Perfect was well beaten on her next start in the French Oaks while Zarigana went off the 6-4 favourite to provide a real example of her talent in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes. Yet the Aga Khan filly came up short again, making smooth progress to get to the lead only then get outbattled by 33-1 chance Cercene, a first royal meeting winner for trainer Joseph Murphy. Fellowes could not resist a dig at the second, writing on X, 'And that is precisely why the Pouliches should never have been taken away from Shes Perfect.' Watts, who calls his filly 'Sue', posted his own reaction on the social media site. He said: 'The positive is that the French 1,000 Guineas form has been franked. Zarigana was there, put her head in front in the final furlong, she should have won. It proves that the French form is franked. 'The negative is it proves there is no way in hell that race should have ever have been taken away from her. Sue battles, Sue battles, Sue battles. Zarigana loves to put her head up and get beat. 'They have to overturn a race if there is no question whatsoever the inconvienced horse would have won. There has to be so many questions whether she would actually have gone past. 'In my opinion she was never ever ever going past. It brings the pain all back.'

School's out forever for dedicated languages teacher at St Aidan's High in Wishaw

Fiona McGrogan has spent the last 36 years educating young people in Lanarkshire A dedicated teacher will bid a final farewell to her high school years in Wishaw as the bell rings for the summer holidays. Fiona McGrogan has been teaching for 36 years but will retire and now hopes to get around to reading through her 'many books'. ‌ The principal teacher of languages at St Aidan's High will walk through the school gates in Waverley Drive for the last time as a teacher this week after 36 years of teaching. Fiona's been working at the school since 1993. ‌ 'I always liked working with young people and I loved my subjects, so it was a natural fit," Fiona said. 'Teaching has been my only permanent job. I did enjoy waitressing though. 'I have mainly been an English teacher, but my degree is in English and German, and I started out teaching German. It's funny as I have come full circle and have ended up managing Modern Languages as faculty head since 2020.' At the beginning of her career new teachers were to do a stint in temporary posts before landing a permanent position at a school. Fiona taught all over Lanarkshire but when she first walked in the door at St Aidan's in 1993 she knew she had found a home and was going to love the place. She remained there for over three decades and has been a Principal Teacher since 1999. ‌ Fiona admits she will miss discussing literature with students and watching how their ideas develop and that the education is a two-way street. 'I learn something new from them every time,' Fiona revealed. 'And kids never fail to surprise me and make me laugh.' ‌ So, what will the long-standing teacher do with her newly found free time after retiring? 'I love reading, theatre, and catching up with friends,' Fiona added. 'I'm looking forward to working my way through my many books.
