Odisha Guv, CM, opposition leader congratulate IMD director general M Mohapatra for UN award

Bhubaneswar, Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Naveen Patnaik on Monday congratulated IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra for receiving the prestigious United Nations Sasakawa Award 2025 for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Congratulating Mohapatra on being conferred the prestigious award, Kambhampati in post on X said, "Dr. Mohapatra's pioneering work in cyclone forecasting and early warning systems has significantly enhanced disaster preparedness, safeguarded vulnerable communities, and saved countless lives."
"Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to the Director General of the India Meteorological Department, Shri Miunjay Mohapatra, on being awarded the prestigious UN Sasakawa Prize - 2025. Your accurate assessments during natural disasters have helped save countless precious lives. As an Odia, your achievement is a matter of pride and honour for both the state and the country. I wish you continued success," Chief Minister Majhi said in a social media post.
Taking to X, BJD chief Naveen Patnaik said, "Congratulate #Odisha's Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology of @Indiametdept on being conferred with United Nations Sasakawa Award 2025 for Disaster Risk Reduction. He has been awarded for his pioneering work in reducing cyclone-related fatalities across the Indian Ocean region. #Odisha is proud of your achievement."
Mohapatra, who hails from Odisha's Bhadrak district and is popularly known as the 'Cyclone Man of India,' was recognised for his outstanding contributions to tropical cyclone forecasting and early warning systems.
He has been serving as the IMD Director General since 2019. He is also one of the three vice-presidents of the World Meteorological Organisation, the UN agency for climate change, weather and water.
The award was presented during the eighth session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction held in Geneva recently.
In a message, Mohapatra said, "Received United Nations Sasakawa Award, 2025 for disaster risk reduction. I am really grateful."
Earlier this year, Mohapatra received the Scientific and Technological Activities Commission Outstanding Service Award 2025 from the American Meteorological Society in recognition of his transformative work in enhancing tropical cyclone prediction and warning systems.

A 'akhand deep' was lit at the temple as a symbol of hope and healing, with emotional appeals made for Patnaik's successful operation and quick return to public life. While talking to ANI, former MP and BJD leader Amar Patnaik said, 'We have gathered here at the Jagannath Temple in Hauz Khas, Delhi, along with members of the Odia community residing in the capital. As you know, our former Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, is undergoing surgery in Mumbai tomorrow morning. Just like yesterday, when people from every corner of Odisha came together in prayer for his speedy recovery, we, who are currently in Delhi and not in Bhubaneswar, have come to the Lord Jagannath temple here. We lit a lamp and prayed that his surgery goes smoothly and he recovers soon so he can once again serve the people of Odisha, as he always has.' Monetary assistance of ₹3.96 crore given to fishermen who lost their boats to Sri Lankan Navy

Ramanathapuram MLA Katharbatcha Muthuramalingam handed over monetary assistant to the tune of ₹.3.96 crore to 54 fishermen who lost their boats to the Sri Lankan Navy over the last one year. Speaking to the press, he said that ₹8 lakh each was given to 48 mechanised boat fishermen and ₹2 lakh each to six country boat fishermen. The timely measure by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to assist the grieving fishermen and their families over their loss of livelihood received a huge appreciation from the fisherfolk community, he added. 'DMK government has revised the assistance amount three times in the last four years. Due to this, ₹5 lakh which was initially given was increased to ₹6 lakh and now we give ₹8 lakh,' he added. Answering a question regarding the need of a sea ambulance to adhere to the need of fishermen in emergency situations while fishing, he said that it was already discussed in the Assembly. 'As ₹1,000 crore was allocated for the district to carry out various projects, this would also be taken up for implementation,' he assured. Jesu Raja, a fishermen leader, said that the assistance by the Tamil Nadu government was an important and timely assistance for the families of fishermen who have lost their boats. District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon was also present during the event.
