Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe is joining the likes of Alan Shearer, Sir Bobby Robson and Jackie Milburn in being granted freedom of the city status after leading the Magpies to their first domestic trophy for 70 years.Howe steered his team to a historic Carabao Cup triumph in March and this honour means Howe will have his name inscribed in the wall of the Banqueting Hall at the Civic Centre, alongside the names of other recipients."Eddie Howe will forever be a hero to Newcastle United supporters for his achievements during his time at the club so far," council leader Karen Kilgour said."I'm thrilled members [of the council] recognised the significance of his contribution to our city by approving to bestow upon him the Honorary Freedom of Newcastle."For a city that lives and breathes sport with a football club around which so many lives revolve, the wait to see black and white shirts lift a trophy at the home of football had long felt it would go on forever."More than being the man who brought silverware back to Tyneside, Eddie is a fantastic ambassador for our city."He is passionate yet calm, inspiring and polite, and handles himself with grace in the face of both success and defeat."Read more about Howe receiving the highest civic honour the city can grant

Jofra Archer will make his long-awaited red-ball return on Sunday – not that his county wanted anyone to know. Sussex on Saturday named a 12-man squad for their County Championship match in Durham, with Archer mysteriously missing from the list. Given England selector Luke Wright had said earlier this month that the pace bowler was set to make his comeback from injury at Chester-le-Street, there were fears he had broken down again. However, England chiefs quickly clarified that the squad Sussex published on their website was wrong – and that Archer will indeed don whites for the first time in four years today. Mail Sport understands Sussex had bizarrely left the 2019 World Cup winner off their list because they were trying to avoid extra media attention on his return. The 30-year-old has not played any first-class cricket since Sussex's County Championship clash with Kent in May 2021, a match he did not finish after injuring his right elbow. Archer's last Test came in India earlier that year, while he has not featured in a home England Test since 2020. The Barbados-born star most recently played competitive cricket for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL in May, but his tournament was cut short after he suffered a thumb injury. If Archer comes through this County Championship match unscathed, he could be available for England's second Test against India at Edgbaston, starting on July 2. England are desperate to have Archer back fit ahead of this winter's Ashes, especially with the limitations of their current pace attack being exposed in India's first innings of the series at Headingley.

Archer in line for red ball return from injury for Sussex

LEEDS, England, June 21 (Reuters) - Fast bowler Jofra Archer could be set for his first test cricket action in more than four years after being named in English county side Sussex's squad for their trip to Durham, starting on Sunday. Archer has not picked up a red cricket ball since May 2021 for Sussex after a series of injuries kept delaying his return. He has since returned to international white-ball cricket for England, his last appearance coming in the ICC Champions Trophy one-day defeat to South Africa in March. England selector Luke Wright said earlier this month that if Archer could get some action for Sussex he could be available for the second test against India next month, with captain Ben Stokes saying the 30-year-old was desperate to return to test cricket.
